Joseph Gattelaro Obituary

Gattelaro, Joseph L.

Pittsford: Surrounded by his loving family, Joseph peacefully went to Heaven on May 24, 2013. An outstanding husband, father, grandfather, successful restaurateur, and do-it-yourselfer, Joe lived with an unending sense of humor and common sense.

He was born the sixth of eight children on September 10, 1928, to parents emigrated from the Abbruzze Region of Italy. Always ambitious and hard-working, Joe's career started as a busboy at the Town Tavern on Gibbs Street and continued on at Loperfedo's Italian Restaurant on Court Street, Valley Echo Caterers, Pittsford Tavern on the Mall and Gatson's Restaurant in the Renaissance Apartments on East Ave. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Korean War.

Joe is predeceased by his parents, Mary & James; brothers, Andy, Dominic, Patrick; and sister, Angie; and many close friends. He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Clara; children, Laurie (Anthony) Sagona, Joseph (Debbie) Gattelaro, and Brad (Jennifer) Gattelaro; his grandchildren, Lindsay (James) Reap, Christie, Kyle, Alexandra and Patrick, were his pride & joy. He is also survived by his sister, Rosemary Gattelaro; and brother, Fred (Lena) Gattelaro; many nieces & nephews.

A special thank you to Joe's doctors, Hani Rashid, Joe Delahanty and especially Diego Cahn-Hidalgo for their excellent medical and personal care of Joe and his family.

Dearest Laurie, Though I never met your father, you over the past four years have told me again him. I am grieving with you and your family at this time while also celebrating his ascent to heaven. I am very confident that when your father went before our Lord and Saviour, He said, "Well done Joe, well done". Love, Linda

Dear Joe & family,

I'm sorry to hear of the passing of Papa. Your dad was my mentor back in the day. He taught me that an eighteen hour day was normal. I've taken that to heart. My fondest memory of your dad was working with him at the tavern. Cooking for him Wednesday nights at Crummer's will always be special to me. I'm sorry I will not be able to attend mass tomorrow. I can hear the keys jingling. I know he's close by.

Love,
David Miran

Back in the late 60's and early 70's I was a busboy at Pittsford Tavern on The Mall and Joe was the owner and he was a jack of all jobs. He was going to teach me the restaurant business and I decided to go to college for it and when I got done with college he said I could have a job working for him any time I wanted. Raising a glass up in the air *cheers to you Joe*
