Philomena Thyroff-State Obituary

Philomena Thyroff-State

Pittsford - On January 15, 2021. Philomena predeceased by her loving husband of 51 years, Vincent John State, mother, Filippa Ingrassano Balsamo; father, Luigi Balsamo; brothers, Liborio, Vincent, James, Bernard Balsamo; husband of 20 years, Joseph Thyroff Sr.

Mom loved to cook, bake cakes for birthdays and walking— especially down Fairport Road to East Rochester's Wegmans. Going to garage sales where Mom got her big collection of Christmas, Thanksgiving, sweaters. Mom loved to sew especially scrunchies that matched all her outfits, and would make all her own clothes, even when we were young, our mom would make our mittens and coats. No matter what the weather was like, Mom was always outside the front door, in rain, snow and wind waving goodbye until Mom could no longer see our cars go around the corner.

Mom grew up off Central Park, Rochester, NY - went to School 27 and then off to Franklin High School graduating in 1943. Worked at Eber Brothers Produce at the Public Market. Back in the early 1960's to 1972, Mom worked for the Rochester City School District at Madison High School Audio Visual Department and Rochester Police Department Headquarters as a clerk in 1972 to 1982 .

Survived by her 4 children, Joseph Thyroff (Jeanne), John Thyroff (Kathy), Joan Valenti (John) Louis Thyroff (Valerie), Grandchildren, Scott Thyroff (Shelly), Brad Thyroff, Michael Thyroff (Dawn), Thomas Thyroff (Jessica), John Valenti, Joseph Valenti (Weimin), Paul Valenti (Amanda), Philip Valenti, Anastasia Thyroff Fitzwater (Robbie), Bryan Thyroff (Christine), Emily Thyroff. Also survived by 19 Great-Grandchildren.

Greatly appreciated the wonderful, loving care St. John's Memory Unit South Bldg., 5th floor gave to our wonderful Mom. Without a doubt the love they showed our Mom during a full year pandemic eased our pain of not seeing and hugging our Mom.

Mom had a private family Grave Site Burial by Father Jim Schwartz who knew our Mom and family when Father Jim was growing up in the same neighborhood. Mom's grandchildren and great-grandchildren were pallbearers.

Wishing to make donations please do so St. John's Embraced Living, 150 Highland Avenue Rochester, 14620.

Mom showed her family how to love. If our dear Mom offered to give you a "Free Hug" then you were Blessed.

Jeanne and Joan,
I am so sorry that you lost your mom (in-law). She sounded like a really fun and creative spirit in her obituary. I bet she’s up (around or over) there now passing out those “free hugs”.
Sincerely,
Judy Tobin ( Earth Angel gardener)

I loved the conversations I had with Philomena when she would come into our dental office. She made me promise I would call her Grandma! Rest in Paradise Grandma ❤
