Richard Streb Obituary

Streb, Richard William
Harrisonburg, Va: Age 82, died November 21st. Richard Streb was born in Rochester, NY on April 18, 1925 to the late Richard Paul Streb and Elizabeth Kirchner Streb. After attending Ben Franklin High School he volunteered to serve in the US Navy in WWII. He served with valor and bravery on the USS Essex in the Pacific earning 13 battle stars. He returned home to marry his high school sweetheart Rosemary Anna Laurer, and complete his higher education. He received his BA and MA in history education from Syracuse University. He received his EdD in education from Columbia University in 1979. His dissertation titled, "A History of the Citizenship Education Project" won the National Exemplary Dissertation Award. He was a lifelong educator both at the high school and college level. He believed in and taught tolerance, justice and equality throughout his life. He authored several books on history, including "Life and Death Aboard the USS Essex."
He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years Rosemary Streb, of Harrisonburg, Va. and his daughter and son-in-law, Rosanna and James McMillan of Lexington, Va. He is also survived by three brothers George Streb and sister-in-law Rosemarie Streb of Rochester, NY. Robert Streb of Long Island, NY and Don Streb of Asheville, NC, three sisters, Elizabeth Milsap, Ruth Streb and Sister Pious (Margaret Streb) all of Rochester, NY. He was preceded in death by his brother Bill Streb.
A gathering to celebrate Richard Streb's life will be held this Sunday December 2nd from 1 to 3 PM at The School of The Holy Childhood, 100 Groton Pkwy. Rochester, NY. Family and friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to The School of the Holy Childhood in Rochester, or to Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave., Montgomery, AL 36104.
