Never got the chance to know her, only from what i've been told as a child. but I would like to pay down my respects to Rita, the grandma I was never fortunate enough to meet.

I'll never forget the fun we had during holiday weekends in Washington D.C. at Bill and Francisco's place with Rita and Russ. What fun?! We had such fun times watching the July 4 fireworks -- even being pulled up on the roof for a bird's eye view. I'll always remember good friends and kindred spirits from the US Air era in DC. Hope you are celebrating in heaven with a wild drink (or two!)

Mom,

You really were an amazing character, and an amazing friend to so many -- and honestly, an unconventional mother to say the least! But I know you lived life to the fullest -- or at least as much as any one woman could with five kids and limited resources.

I miss you, of course, but am so grateful for the friendship and the times we shared. We traveled to all ends of the country -- even to the old country, too -- together as friends. I remember your surprise visits to my dorm 300-miles from home on a Friday night just to hang out. We laughed and hollered and hiked hills, and debated politics, and on so many occasions sat not-so-quietly in a movie -- intentionally crinkling into and out of a shared cellophane candy bag, laughing at the audience that shushed us.

I know you hated growing old because you were a kid at heart and you proved it every day.

But mostly I'm so happy you were able to leave us in such a peacefully way. And I'm so grateful I was able to say goodbye, to see those beautiful blue eyes look deep into me one last time, questioning whether I was eating right or if I was happy or in love again or heartbroken or just enjoying my day -- even as you lay there in your waning moments.

Thanks Mom. I love you.

I knew Rita Kress from working at Head Start when I left the military to join Head Start in 1993; she was a delightful person, she and I clicked from the beiginning and I loved her very much, she was always telling jokes and inviting her favorite people over to her house for a swim in the pool. I am so sorry to hear that she passed; but happy that she has gone home to our father who loved her more than we ever could. God Bless your family and take care.
