Sheila N. (Sullivan) Krauter

Rochester - Sheila passed quietly with family by her side on Friday, June 19,2020. Predeceased by her loving husband Edward Krauter. Survived by her daughters Sheila (Jim) Fleischauer, and Cheryl Butera, grandchildren Stephen (Laurie) Scinicariello, Aaron (Pam) Fleischauer, Colette Fumarola, Alison (Josh) Galiley, Great Grandchildren Abigail, Owen, Jack, Nicole, Beatrice, and Charlotte.

Sheila grew up in Bromley, England with her parents Con and Nancy and sister Pearl. Her teenage years were brutally interrupted by the war in Europe. At the age of 17 she went to work for the Allied Command Center as a telephone operator. It was there that she caught the eye of a young signal corps Master Sargent Edward Krauter. Sheila and Ed started dating and often took long walks in the streets of London past damaged buildings and often during the blitz with bombs exploding nearby. After they were married, they continued their jobs in the Allied Communication Center.

Nearing the end of the war Sheila joined other "war brides" in a Navy convoy that took weeks as they crisscrossed the Atlantic to avoid Nazi submarines. She was met in New York by the Red Cross and given a train ticket to Rochester to met up with Ed's parents. Later she was honored to be one of the first "war brides" to arrive in Rochester. She was just 19 years old and had bravely lived through a frightening and challenging time to arrive in an unfamiliar land far different from her native England, but her motto "Carry on Regardless" kept her strong through the years.

After the war in Europe ended, Ed returned home where they started their married life. They ended up in Irondequoit where they raised their two daughters in a quiet peaceful neighborhood. Sheila got a job at Rochester General Hospital as a receptionist in the X-Ray Department retiring after 26 years. They joined an English American Club and had many great parties and trips around the world, often with their close friends Ed and Edie Gallavin, who also immigrated here from England after the war. but Sheila always missed her native England and her relatives back home. She visited there often and never lost her delightful English accent.

She enjoyed her grandchildren who would often put on plays to her delight. She also enjoyed taking her grandchildren on many trips and she lavished her love on her great grandchildren.

Sheila will be interred with her husband former Master Sargent and Bronze Star recipient at the military cemetery in South Florida National Cemetery followed by a private service.
