Thomas Greer Obituary

On Tuesday evening November 9, 2010 Thomas M. Greer passed away peacefully at the home of his son, C. Thomas Greer. He would have been 93 in February. Tom was born near Belfast, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. At the age of 11 Tom, his mother and father, James and Bella; and his brothers, Robert, William and Alexander (Sandy) moved to Avon. All are now deceased. Tom made his home in East Avon with his wife, Evy (or Ev as he fondly referred to her). They were married for 67 years when she passed away 2 years ago. They had 2 children, Carolyn Giles (Sloatsburg, NY) and C. Thomas Greer (Bloomfield, NY); his children, daughter-in-law, (Sue Greer) and 2 grandchildren, Brooke and Tommy Greer were very important to him. We will miss him dearly and hold him in our hearts forever. We can let him go to be with Mom knowing that he had such a wonderful long life. Tom was a very successful Dairy Farmer. After selling the cows he continued to crop farm, was the Town Assessor and drove the School Bus. When Tom and Evy began to winter in Florida they sold the farm and moved to Conesus Lake and eventually to a small house in East Avon, where they could look out over the property they had farmed for so many years. As their health failed they moved to Morgan Estates Assisted Living Center, Geneseo, NY. The staff and residents became their extended family. It was very comforting to know that he loved living there and they loved him and his quiet ways. Over the years, Tom was a volunteer Fireman, raced go carts, raced ponys and played a lot of golf. In September 2006 Tom was honored by the Avon Lions Club for his commitment to Lionism as an original founding member.
Friends may call Friday 6-9 PM at the Stephenson-Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., 350 Genesee St., Avon. His Funeral Service will be held Saturday 10 AM at the First Presbyterian Church of East Avon. Interment East Avon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Avon Lions Club, where Tom so proudly dedicated his time.

Dear Carolyn and family, Please know that you are in our thoughts and hearts at this time. It must be comforting to know that your parents are finally back together again - as they were for so many years while here. Hope they don't have to go shopping in heaven - think of all those cakes and cookies they'll be buying! Love, Debbie, Jack, and the rest of the Kay family.

I knew Tom for only a short time while I worked at Morgan Estates. Despite that short time and his quiet ways, he touched me in ways I will never forget. The love he had for his family, especially his wife, was awe-inspiring and real. He will be missed by all who knew him, of that I am sure.
