I read through some of my Mom's cards and letters to get a feel for what to tell you about her. She took time to express her thoughts, impressions and memories in her beautiful handwriting.
Firstly, she cared very deeply for people. She loved her family dearly. She cared for her father, mother and aunt until they passed away in advanced ages. Mom loved the natural beauty of Webster, the deer in the backyard, the fruit trees and the lush greenery. She maintained long-term relationships with her girlfriends from high school.
Joyce graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School in 1947. She was a popular cheerleader and high school sorority member. She loved to ice skate in winters across the street from her house on Norton Street.
When her parents built their house in Webster the early 1950's, she was already married to Gene Garda, now deceased. My brothers, Gene and Roy, enjoyed visiting Grandpa and Grandma's fruit farm. In December 1961 Joyce married Henry Oskamp. He adopted my brothers, and a within a few years I was born. The grandparents gifted the land to my parents to build a house in the early 1970's. Mom lived there until, for health reasons, it was necessary to move to an assisted living facility near us in Maryland. There, she was near 2 of her 3 grandchildren. Mom was able to celebrate our daughter's 20th birthday with her before she departed for Senegal to French/development/economic/political studies.
Mom enjoyed attending any and all of the grandchildren's events, either in NY or when she visited Maryland, whether they were dramatic plays, musicals, baseball games or dance recitals. She was proud of all their academic achievements, and the languages they were learning. Mom came to visit us in Italy at a time when my children were fluently chattering in Italian, and how she enjoyed that!
She always supported and encouraged all of us to go on to do big things; to travel and to seek our goals in life. She and Dad enjoyed hosting family barbeques in the backyard, gathering all of us together to tell our stories. She also was blessed to be able to travel to Mexico, Japan, Germany, Scandinavia, and Italy. There are close family friends present from Morelia, Mexico, which she & I visited in 1992. We toured Rome together in 2004, which is a favorite memory. She was fascinated by the Vatican tour.
Mom eventually succumbed to Devic's Disease, an autoimmune disease similar to MS, which attacks the spinal cord and brain. It placed her in a wheelchair for the last 8 years of her life. She had pain, which she stubbornly and bravely battled. She was extremely blessed to have my Dad as her primary caregiver for 6 of those years. Prior to the sudden onset of that disease in 2008, which took time to diagnose and treat, my parents enjoyed attending polka-dancing events in Elmira, NY. Joyce loved taking drives along the Finger Lakes, which she admired and told every out-of-towner about with great pride.

I have wonderful memories growing up, spending time picking cherries from your yard and making pies at your house. She was always interested in what we were doing and having conversations about what was going on in our lives. I owe my banking career to her! I remember when I was looking for a job and she said to me "you were always good at math, you should work for a bank". Thirty two years later, I guess she was right. I will miss her deeply. Love, Jody.
