William Hale Obituary

Hale II, William Barton

Rochester: William ("Bill") Barton Hale II, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his beloved Adirondack camp, The Taj MaHale, on Lake Clear, New York, on Thursday, August 20, 2015. He was 93 years of age, having been born in Rochester, New York, on November 22, 1921, to Ezra Andrews Hale and Josephine Booth Hale.

He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Fillius Hale and his brother, Andrews Brooks Hale. His sister, Anne Hale Johnson, survives him, as do his son, James Long Hale (wife Deborah), their children, Sarah Hale Bazil (husband Drew and daughter Emma), Taylor Long Hale, and Eliza Chace Hale Kelman (husband Tevye); and his daughters, Barbara Hale Hawley (husband John), their daughters Maureen Hawley, Allison Hawley Simmons (husband Mike and daughter Scarlett), Caitlin Hawley, and Shannon Hawley LeMaster (husband Blake); and Katherine Brooks Hale.

Bill graduated from The Phillips Exeter Academy in 1940, and Dartmouth College in 1944, where he was a proud member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. During World War II, he enlisted in the United States Navy as an Ensign and volunteered for and survived submarine duty in the Pacific theatre. He devoted his entire business career to The Lawyers Cooperative Publishing Company, where he rose to lead the Government and Law School Departments and retired as Secretary of the company.

His charitable and service involvements were legion, most notably including The Boy Scouts, Dartmouth College, Phillips Exeter Academy, Rochester Institute of Technology, Al Sigl Center, Highland Hospital, Rochester Museum and Science Center, Third Presbyterian Church, Paul Smiths College, Lake Placid Sinfonetta, and Pendragon Theater.

None will soon forget Bill's easy-going sense of humor, legendary storytelling, and his ample generosity.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Third Presbyterian Church, 4 Meigs Street, on Friday, October, 2 at 2 PM followed by a reception at the Country Club of Rochester. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Seneca Waterways Council of the Boy Scouts, 2320 Brighton Henrietta Town Line Rd., Rochester, NY 14623; Saranac Lake Village Improvement Society, PO Box 702, Saranac Lake NY 12983-0702 or Saranac Lake Free Library, 109 Main St., Saranac Lake, NY 12983. Not sure what to say?

Kip and Debbie, Barb and Kate,
My sincere condolences to you and your families. As a Pickwick Drive alumna, and a "child of Cloverwood and Cancun," our lives crossed paths for many years with Bill and your families. I will never forget his kindness to Gigi over the backgammon board at VCI in their later years, and many years of his and Pat's friendship with both Charlie and Ginny. Debbie was so good to Gigi in her years at Cloverwood, and she was so pleased when Bill came to live there too. He lit up the dining room with his presence! I appreciate those memories and I'm sorry you have lost your Dad. Sincerely, Laurie Burnham, Hyde Park Vermont

To the Hale family, especially Pat, I worked at LCP for 10 years as ran that elevator at the end of the day in my younger days and frequently got to speak with Mr. Hale who was one of the best people I've ever met. He had the kindest disposition, friendly to all, and a class individual. It has been many years since but I will always remember his smile and friendly ways. My deepest sympathy to all of the family.

Although I never worked for Bill during my 26 years at LCP, I prized his friendship and greatly enjoyed his sense of humor. He was an invaluable asset to the company. Several years ago, I was privileged to visit him at Taj MaHale and was taken on the grand tour by a grand gentlemen.
Happy trails, Bill.
