I was one of Paul´s first PhD students. He was very patient with me despite a my academic deficiencies. We remained friends for my years. He was truly a great mentor. Tom Terich

Paul was an inspirational scientist and a kind, generous colleague. He contributed much to our NZ coastal community, particularly in the gravel beach area. My sincere condolonces to his family and friends in Oregon. We will miss his and Jan's visits to Aotearoa but continue to be inspired by the works he has gifted our coastal community. Nga mihi nui, thank you Paul. Kua hinga te totara i Te Waonui-a-Tane. The totara tree has fallen in Tane's great forest.

This is a great loss. Paul was my outside advisor for my dissertation at U of SC in the late 1970s. Always challenged me with excellent questions and improved my research. We stayed in touch through many conferences - including at the same 2nd class (to save money) hotel in Kobe for ICCE a few months before the earthquake in 1994. And I was thrilled to host him in Myrtle Beach for a keynote at the ASBPA National Conference in 2019. He was truly one of the greats of our profession. I learned of his death today during an editorial board call for Shore & Beach, a publication he edited for several years. Shore & Beach editors plan to reprint the tribute to him from S&B which was first published after he received the prestigious Morrough P. O'Brien Award from ASBPA.
To his family and colleagues at OSU - Please accept my deepest sympathies.

Very sad to hear of his passing. Paul was an absolute giant in the field of coastal geomorphology worldwide. Despite being an unknown PhD student from Australia, Paul offered to take me on a 4-day tour of the Oregon coastline in 2006. I will forever remember this trip and am tremendously grateful for his generosity and sharing of wisdom. Vale Paul (listening to Philip Glass now in his honor!)

My Uncle Paul was an extraordinary man. He was recognized around the world as an expert in his chosen fields of Oceanography and beach erosion. He had a lifetime of teaching, educating and consulting to make the world a better place.
Our family will miss him very much.
