Lisa VanHorn Obituary

Lisa Grace Van Horn

Lisa Grace Van Horn, beyond beloved wife, mother, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on March 16, 2018. How do you describe the force of nature, the crazy diamond, that was Lisa with mere words? I thought I knew what love was when I met the beautiful "Tye Dye" Lisa. Why she agreed to go out with a goofy business major always amazed me. Lisa always spoke with kindness and she believed love and compassion were necessities, not luxuries.

Lisa grew up in Lubbock with stints in Georgia and New Mexico. She attended the South Plains Nursing School, SMU for dance, and the University of Houston before coming to Denton to go to UNT in 1989. She found her home in Denton, found a wide circle of friends, and was happy here from her first day. Lisa impacted many lives during her years at the TWU Child Development Center and continued to spread her light by helping friends and neighbors whenever she could and doing volunteer work. She raised the finest young man I know and Lisa brought joy and happiness to me beyond measure every day that I knew her.

Lisa's smile was incomparable and infectious. She was a crafter and cook extraordinaire and made a house our home every day. On any day when I came home for lunch, she would be making one of her wonderful quilts, making soap, and baking bread. To see her beautiful smile when I walked in and to hear a "Hi Sweetheart!" will be so missed.

Lisa was a welcoming woman with a frontier spirit who made many things from scratch including all kinds of breads, cakes, soap, laundry detergent, and even mayonnaise. She loved live music, dancing, being with her many friends, wine, travel, exotic foods, making tye dye, maps, children, dogs, gardening, flowers, her home, and her family. Lisa loved to teach and had a truly unique relationship with all young children. She was an amazing and beautiful woman.

She is survived by her husband Scott Sellers, our son Connor Sellers, her mother Ada Van Horn of Lubbock, her brother and sister-in-law Charles and Jennifer Van Horn, and so many heartbroken friends and extended family members. She was preceded in death by our son Sean, her brother Parks, and her father Harry.

I loved her every day and thankfully told her so. The world is diminished by her loss. Speak kindly to those you love and seize the day my friends. Life is precious and fleeting.

Please join us in a celebration of Lisa's life at 2 pm Sunday, March 25th, 2018 at the Denton County Fair Grounds located at 2217 N Carroll Blvd, Denton, TX 76201. All friends are welcome.

Though we were second cousins, I did not actually have the opportunity to meet Lisa until I was around 14. From the moment I met her, she was a delight to be around. Full of life, giving, and a blessing to know. I did not get to see her much as an adult, but over the years we would write or call once in a while, and it was always wonderful to visit with her. A beautiful soul inside and out, and I will miss her greatly, as will every person she ever knew. My sincere condolences are to the whole family. A great loss indeed.

The world has lost a soul full grace and compassion. Everyone that met her knew the gift of laughter and her smile. She left way too early.

If I had to pick one of all the amazing memories I have of Lisa, I would say it was the summer of 2010. I had to move home to St. Louis and Lisa gave up most of her summer to stay with me and help me unpack, sort, purge and heal. But that is what Lisa did, that was who she was and always will be in my memory.
