Roland Duane Bender
Roland Duane Bender of Denton, TX passed away on January 29, 2022. His granddaughter Ashley was with him when he took his last breaths, and the rest of the family was in close support. He was 91 years old.
Roland was born on January 2, 1931, to Alfred Carl Bender and Ethel May Bender (Ryan) in Columbus Ohio. He had an older brother, Burwyn (deceased July 2008), and a younger sister, Karen.
He attended Ohio State University, was in the US Air Force during the Korean conflict, and the Air Force Reserve where he reached the rank of Captain. Roland was proud and honored to serve our country in the military. After the Air Force, he worked for Ortho Pharmaceutical Company in sales before returning to college.
Roland earned his bachelor's degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 1968, and a master's degree from North Texas State University in 1972. He worked for Moore Business Forms in various purchasing and production management positions for 19 years, then for Texas Woman's University's printing department for 12 years.
Roland was dedicated to his family. He supported each family member in everything they did, including scouting, swimming, band, dance recitals, and soccer games. Throughout his life, Roland stayed as active as he could by helping with family projects- from plumbing to roofing, sprinklers to patio covers, deer stands to backyard buildings, TV swivels to pool tables, and more.
Roland enjoyed anything family related, including grilling a fabulous steak during family get-togethers. He enjoyed working Sudoku puzzles and sharing Nintendo's -Zelda adventures with "invested" family members...back in the day. He enjoyed taking care of his yard. He always had one of the best looking lawns on the block. He also enjoyed just being outside with a good cup of coffee; who are we kidding, outside or inside, Roland always was ready for a good cup of coffee...even up to his last days.
He was a committed husband, a strong father, a loving grandfather/great-grandfather, and a good friend.
Roland is survived by his wife of 64 years- Betty Louise (Johnson) Bender of Denton; son Carl Duane Bender and wife Melinda (Moncure) of Pflugerville, TX; son Kelland Clay "Kelly" Bender and wife Betsy (Goss) of Denton, TX; daughter Duana Dene' (Bender) Pearson and husband Steve of Nacogdoches, TX; Roland's sister Karen Elaine (Bender) Gainer of Crossville, Tennessee.
He is survived by 7 grandchildren: Christopher Mathew Bender and wife Sarah (Jenkins) of Durham, North Carolina; Michael Carl Bender of Pflugerville: Ashley Michele Bender of Pflugerville; Kayla Marie Bender of Denton; Bryan Clay Bender of Denton; Amanda Beth Pearson of Denton; and Sarah Dene' Pearson of Dallas. Roland is also survived by a great-grandson: Daniel James Bender of Durham, North Carolina.
While not part of their biological family, Roland (and Betty) consider Greg and Jane Naugher and their children, spouses, and grandchildren as part of the Bender family. Roland would want them included as his survivors. They are Greg and Jane (Lane) Naugher of Sanger, Tx; JJ, Chris, Mary Jane, Caden, Charis Searcy of Corinth, TX; Lane, Paige, Hattie, Luke, Benjamin, Hannah Naugher of San Antonio, Tx; and Julie, Seth, Darcy, Davey Joy, Brody Hawkins of Richardson, TX.
Roland was always willing to help young people in their quest to a successful life, through organizations such as scouting, sports in its pure form, educational endeavors, and vocational-skills programs. Instead of flowers, please feel free to contribute in his name to your favorite organization that is involved in the development and protection of young people.
