Betty, You have my sympathy. Al was a wonderful person and boss at Martin Marietta. I was so honored when he asked me to type up the story of the two of you 25 years of marriage. May he rest in peace.

Dear Betty and family, we so appreciated Al and his encouragement for us in missions. His cheerful spirit so encouraged us and reflected his joy in the Lord. I remember how he helped me get interviews after my time at CU for a job at Martin Marietta. May our Lord give you much comfort and grace in this time of mourning but also strength knowing you will see Al again with the Lord. What a Savior! Doug for the Stoner Family

I first met Al at MIT when I joined Phi Mu Delta Fraternity. While I was on the crew having fun, my grades were sinking like a ship and I was close to flunking out.But thanks to Al's constant and patient tutoring,I was able to pull through. I always remember his great laugh and sense of humor. They don't make 'em like him very often - He will be missed.

Al and your entire family have been close Christian friends to our family. Homes of Honor, Men's Thunder Chorus, PromiseKeepers, Saturday Morning Bible Study, Gideons, and worship services are a few of the treasures I have received from Al and the Schallenmullers. I look forward to seeing Al in heaven. When our Saturday morning Bible study talked about Al this past Saturday, we remembered his love for the children - he always asked that we "pray for the kids." Al, Betty, and family, we're praying for you and the kids. We grieve with you at the loss of Al on earth, but rejoice that he is in his heavenly home. Love you, Jim and Debbie

Dearest Betty and the Schallenmuller Family,
I was so sorry to hear of Al's passing. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy.
Al was truly a beacon of God's hope and light and he lived each day as Jesus wants us to live. What a role model and disciple. Al now wants for nothing and is in paradise. May knowing this give all of you the peace that passes all understanding. Love and hugs to all of you.

Betty and Family,
I will always remember Al with extreme respect and appreciation for the way he treated his colleagues and all who knew him. He was steadfast in his faith, while working in a highly competitive environment, pushing the limits of technological progress.
Al was my boss for over half a decade and as we walked the halls of NASA, person after person would come forth to greet him and reminisce on some project they had worked on together. The admiration was always in their eyes.
He played a pivotal role in operations for the Viking mission to Mars, had worked with the astronauts for their Gemini missions, and held leadership positions in many other aerospace projects. As a chemical engineer, he was a true "rocket scientist."
Yet, Al was always modest, generous, and extremely considerate to all those who reported to him. It was such a pleasure to be associated with him and he will always remain one of my inspirations for how things ought to be.

Betty, may the joy of your good years together keep you warm in your future ones. He was a very good man. I remember Ron and I going to "rock" programs with the two of you, and occasionally seeing him at Swedish as he did God's work.

I worked with Al for many years. We carpooled for a time. I enjoyed our chats about his work with the Gideons and the trips he made placing bibles. He was a neat person to know. We will all miss him.

Al was my first personal contact with MIT. He visited me in Phoenix during the summer before my freshman year, told me about MIT, invited me to stay at the Phi Mu Delta fraternity during Rush Week and picked me up at the Boston airport on my arrival. It was a very nice gesture and introduction to MIT. He was always a kind and thoughtful person.
In the summer of 1955, after my freshman year, Al and I flew to Tucson and Phoenix while another fraternity brother, Al Russell, hitchhiked from Massachusetts to Tucson. Then Al S. drove Al R. to my home in Phoenix, where we had dinner, and then the three of us drove overnight (that was before air conditioning in cars) to California, taking Al Russell there. My parents made a jug with a couple of gallons of lemonade so that we would not be thirsty on the long trip over the hot desert, but we drank it all up before even leaving the city limits of Phoenix. Al S. and I visited his sister Martha's family in California, and a few days later Al and I drove back to Arizona.
Although Al and I never got together after I finished MIT, I have always remembered him warmly.

Dear Betty and all the family,
The photo collection is such a great tribute to Al and the whole family, too. Al's bright smile and gentle presence shines through.
It is clear that Al was not only a great success in his professional endeavors, but more importantly he built a strong and loving family around him. We remember "Tiger and Sweetie Pie", and will miss Al deeply.
May God provide His peace that passes understanding to you all, as you morn Al's passing on to eternal life with our Lord.

I will always remember the big smile Al had at work. Eric had that same smile. It was a privilidge to know and work with him and Eric when I was at Martin from 1980 to 1998. You will be in our prayers. God Bless you all. Charles Douglas (Centennial, CO)

Al Schallenmuller was one of the most talented leaders in the aerospace industry. He held a key role in the Viking missions to Mars in the mid-1970's and important management roles in ongoing programs for Martin Marietta. He won the coveted Snoppy award from NASA for his substantial contributions.
I worked with Al from 1985 to 1991. His constant smile and steady compass made him a delight to be around. He held his family and religion as his highest priority even while being a hard worker. Al Schallenmuller, one of the very good guys.
Betty and family, am very sorry.

Betty,
I want to share with you and the rest of your family how much I liked and respected Al. I first met Al in 1968 when I interviewed for a job at Martin Marietta. I ended up working for Martin Marietta/Lockheed Martin for over 36 years. Al and I worked together on the Viking project for several years, both here and at JPL. Also Al and I were also fellow Gideons in the same camp.
May the Lord continue to bless you and your whole family,
Sid Cook

Al once told me that each evening he would kneel at Betty's bedside and pray with her or would read Scripture to her. Such an act revealed to us how committed, how dedicated this man of God was to his first and foremost responsibility - to lead, to nurture, and to nourish his loved ones in communion with Jesus.

As a fraternity brother of mine at Phi Mu Delta at MIT, Al was a leader that we looked up to. He was always full of fun, good humored and showed us that you could be an amazingly good student and still be a delightful personality. Best wishes and condolences to the family.

A memory from the distant past:
Schallenmuller (I never called him Al) and I were fraternity brothers (and room-mates for two years) at MIT. We also drove across the country several times, I stayed with him at his home in Tuscon and he spent time with me at my home in the San Francisco Bay area in between semesters. He provided moral support when I ordered my first "legal" drink - a sloe gin fizz at Storyville in Boston. He and I also shared a drink with Harry Belafonte (a drink of water) at the Mark Hopkins in San Francisco.
He was a leader (house president) and a role model for me - I don't think I would have graduated without his help with my coursework and his overall encouragement and support. Plus, he was a good friend and we had some great times together during our years at MIT.
I only saw Schallenmuller once after college as we went or separate ways but I thought of him often and all he meant to me. He made a real difference in my life. And now that he is gone it grieves my heart full sore.

Betty, Eric, Cynthia, Lisa & Dan - Wonderful Family! LOVED the pictures of you all. Al made such an impact - oh gosh - 10 - 15 years ago! on Bill and our Miller family. What a strong husband, father, grandfather, teacher, witness, bold praying Christian man he was! Isn't it fun to think he's having lunch with Billy Graham and Jimmy Stewart? Love you all - Bill and Daylyn and kiddos

Dear friends, what a wonderful light your husband/dad was! I can just see him singing with the Men's Thunder Chorus, belting out 'Lord I Lift Your Name on High", "Blessed Be Your Name" and getting teary eyed singing "Amazing Grace" and "Sanctuary".....always with a bowtie, of course. He seemed to do everything with gusto- no lukewarm for him! He loved his family and friends fiercely and loved his Savior even more. May God's comfort and peace be with you knowing that he is home now. With love to you all!
