Andrew Holleman Obituary

Holleman, Andrew
November 1, 1969 - February 28, 2019

Andrew (Andy) Douglas Holleman, beloved husband and father, son and brother, died on Thursday morning February 28 while trail running in his treasured Colorado. A native of Denver, Andy was born on November 1, 1969 to Mary Dreier Holleman and the late Paul Douglas Holleman. He was the loving husband of Sharon Kelly and the awesome father of Grace, Maddie and Ben. He is also survived by his mother, his brother Fritz and his wife Callie, his sister Martha and her husband Jim, and leaves behind seven nieces and nephews: Brendan, Jack, Claire, Peter, Tess, Annie and Doug; and countless friends.

Andy attended Denver Public Schools and was a proud Thunderbolt, and Head Boy, at Manual High School. Andy played baseball and football-making the 1988 All-City Football Team. He attended Harvard College, where he captained the Varsity Ski Team and earned a degree in the Comparative Study of Religion. He was a 1996 graduate of the University of Colorado Law School in Boulder, awarded the Order of the Coif and the Don Sears Award, and clerked for the Honorable Richard P. Matsch in the U.S. District Court for Colorado.

Andy was beloved by colleagues everywhere he worked including Qwest Communications and CenturyLink. Most recently, he worked as Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer at Newmont Mining Corporation. His work took him around the world balancing human and environmental interests. Andy was also Adjunct Faculty at Colorado School of Law, co-teaching a class this semester on foreign corrupt practices.

Andy loved the outdoors. He shared his passion for skiing, fly-fishing, hiking, golf and trail running with many friends and his family. He was active in the Friends of Manual and the Denver Scholarship Foundation and supported a wide range of good causes.

Will Rogers never met a man he didn't like. Andy put that saying on its head-no one ever met Andy without immediately liking him. He was full of light and joy-truly the nicest person that many of us have ever met. He will be so missed.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at 4:00 PM on Monday, March 11 at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church (1980 Dahlia Street, Denver).

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Denver Scholarship Foundation would be most appreciated (https://donate.denverscholarship.org or 789 Sherman Street, Suite 610, Denver, CO 80203). Please mention "in Memory of Andy Holleman" in the comments or memo section.

Andy was my teammate and friend on the Harvard Ski Team. He was the one who always kept our spirits up and our bellies laughing in the coldest weather, the long drives to the hills and the interminable waits at the race heads. I am so sorry the world has lost this bright light. He will be missed!

To Andy Holleman's family,
I read each day's obituaries, and I read Andy's. I did not realize that it was him until I came to his being a proud Thunderbolt and a head boy, and then with a brother named Fritz. I knew then that it was Andy. I was absolutely devastated. I coached Andy at Manual and loved him. He was an incredible young man. He and his close friend, whose name I have forgotten, were my absolute favorites!! In fact, my wife and I named our third and final son after Andy.

I remember hearing that he had graduated from Harvard. He was not home when I called to talk with him. I learned that he provided coffee from Einstein's for his friends. I thought that was indicative of his kind and giving spirit!! Though that was the last that I had heard of Andy, I have never stopped thinking of him.

To Andy's mother: You raised a near-perfect son. He was so likeable and friendly. I wish that I could have spent more time with him. I am quite sure that your other children are.just as wonderful as Andy. You are truly blessed!!

I am so sorry that I could not make it to Andy's funeral. I am wheelchair bound and not able to get out very much. Please forgive me.

Sincerely yours,
Andy's coach

I've known Andy since 1985 when we were at Manual High School, and we've kept in touch over the years. Andy, myself, Chris Kishiyama, Eric Kurtz and Mike Kerwin would take an annual "guys trip" to various locations. This past October we went to Moab Utah for the best mountain biking trip I've ever had in my life.

Andy was is the wisest man I've ever known. That wisdom grew not from his intellect -- also formidable -- but from his amazing heart which felt for everyone.

Dean Sharon and family, Andy was a true work friend to me over our years together at Newmont Mining. I will miss our frequent lunches as Andy was such a solid anchor of a person. I am also grateful for Andy introducing and getting me involved with the Denver Scholarship Foundation. I am very sorry for your loss.

We are thinking often of your family; it is a terrible and beautiful thing to both lose and love that much. We will continue to remember you in the weeks and months and years ahead, knowing that this will shape your worlds forever. We have been through something like it. My daughter goes to school with Ben. Even though we didn't meet Andy, we celebrate his wonderful life.

Warmly,

I am numb from the sudden death of my former student, but it is comforting to recall so many fond memories of him and his contributions to his beloved Manual High School. My prayer is for acceptance and understanding, particularly for Andy's family, friends and colleagues. May God continue to bless you with grace, peace and mercy.
Sincerely,

Such terrible news, and I am so very sad to hear of it. Our fathers worked for a very long time together at Holme Roberts and were great friends as well as tremendous men. Being the very same age almost to the day, Andy and I would see each other at the firm picnics or softball outings, and we competed on the baseball field. Like his father, Andy was extremely genuine and likeable, and gravitating to him was easy. My sincerest of prayers and thoughts are with the entire Holleman family. Wherever they might be, I do hope Andy is tossing the ball around with his father and mine. God bless.

I am stunned and saddened to hear of Andy's untimely death. Having known him since he was five years old and one of my son Jay's forever friends, I am grieving with you. His eulogy for my son Jay just 3 and a half years ago was so beautiful, so eloquent, so Andy with his way with words. I know if Jay had not gone first his admiration and friendship for Andy would have been in a eulogy for him that would have been as memorable. Andy is an irreplaceable, one of a kind memory. I am so sorry for your loss.

Andy was my boss at Qwest for a while. I count myself really fortunate to have known him. His passing takes my breath away. He was wise and fun to be around. I won't forget his lessons (such as regarding the Antarctic adventures of Sir Ernest Shackleton)and his authentic friendship.
