The Serrell family and Bill welcomed me into their household without reservations and hired me as a high school hand and jack of no trades. I was equally in awe of the Cold Springs ranch HQ – a modern split-level in a man-made grove of Ponderosa Pine; as with the Cold Spring Ranch repair shop – an old barn infused with the smell and stain of oil and rust. Bill (and Skip) taught me to drive a stick and back the trash wagon up against the lip of an old ravine where we burned the trash and dumped coils of wire from an old fence to nowhere. I have indelible memories of Bill in his Stetson, cruising around the back 40 in his Ford Galaxy – checking on the cows and showing us where to build the next section of fence. I remember his enthusiasm as a contractor poured the first section of cement-lined ditch from Plum Creek (?) that was to revitalize the North field; and the unspoken disappointment the following year after a 100 year storm filled the ditch with pea gravel and defeat. Bill gave me responsibilities that tested my mettle at a young age and helped put a few muscles on my scrawny frame. I’m sure Bill will live in all our memories as a man with a keen vision for his home spread, his faith in the future of ranching and helping to keep some of the legends of the old west alive. With much thanks and gratitude, Jim Washburne, Dec. 26, 2021
