Frederick Langille

1942 - 2015

Frederick "Fred" Albert Langille, Jr., 73, husband of Rita Barreras, father of Michael Victor Langille (Shelly George) and Heather Marie Coffey, and grandfather of Dylan Michael Langille, died at his home on Thursday, August 6, 2015. He valiantly fought both prostate and bladder cancer since December 2013. Including his immediate family, he is survived by brother David Langille (Sherry Allison), Maui, HI; sisters Margery Walzer (Bill Whetzel), Reno, NV; Barbara Anderson (Terry), Oswego, IL; and Jean Hartley (Wayne), Escondido, CA; Aunt Miriam Beam (Max), Scarborough, ME; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is survived by his wife's family including, brothers-in-law John Simon Cardenas (Wanda), Denver, CO; Ray Barreras, Denver, CO; Carlos Barreras (Kris), Fort Collins, CO; and sister-in-law Doris Barreras Cody, Fort Collins, CO; Uncles Joe, Tony and Sam Barreras; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Fred had an interesting and varied career. He began as an engineer in Lincoln, NE, changing to a public policy and social work focus for the remainder of his career in Illinois and Colorado. He served as Chief of the Welfare Division, Illinois Institute for Social Policy and Assistant Director for Welfare and Manpower Programs, Illinois Bureau of the Budget. In 1975 he moved to Colorado and served as Executive Administrator / Deputy Director of the Colorado Department of Social Services. In 1978 he served as the State Planning Director, Office of State Planning and Budgeting, for the State of Colorado. From 1978 to 1996 he served as Executive Vice-President / Chief Operating Officer at National Jewish Hospital. He completed his career as President, Privatization Partnerships Division for Policy Studies, Inc., retiring in 2000. Fred graduated from Kailua High School, Oahu, in 1959, where he was a mile track record holder in Hawaii in his senior year, earning him a scholarship to the University of Michigan. He earned his Master's in Social Work from the University of Michigan in 1971. Fred and Rita lived in Maui, HI, for 10 years, returning to Denver in 2013. He was enjoying his current pet-friendly neighborhood. He was an avid bicyclist and enjoyed the outdoors, his pets (Theo, Ria Nani and Lana), running, photography, reading, art, music, hiking, traveling and time spent with family and friends. He was active with volunteer activities in Colorado and Hawaii. He most enjoyed spending time with Rita, his wife of 34 years. A gathering of family members to celebrate Fred's life and legacy was held on Sunday, August 9, 2015, at the family home.
