On July 20, 2023, Heidi passed away peacefully at home and surrounded by family after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer. Heidi lived each day with a contagious smile, infectious laugh, and a genuine caring for others. Married to her husband Michael for nearly 26 years, Heidi graduated from Kent Denver School, the University of Colorado at Boulder, and received a graduate degree at the Art Institute of Chicago in art therapy/art education. Heidi was passionately involved in a number of leadership roles in philanthropic organizations, including the Denver Debutante Ball, Central City Opera, Denver Botanic Gardens, the Garden Club of Denver, Craig Hospital, Junior League, Denver Children's Museum, Kids Connect and Girls Inc. A nationally ranked equestrian competitor, Heidi also loved painting, travel, tennis, skiing, fly fishing, golf, and spending time with family and friends and with her beloved dogs and horses. Heidi is preceded in death by her father Jim Schmidt and survived by her husband Michael Hammell, mother, Carol Schmidt, and her brother, Erik (Sheila) Schmidt, and other close family. The family wishes to thank the University of California San Francisco, MD Anderson Cancer Center and her doctors here at home for their skilled, compassionate and personalized care. In lieu of flowers and trees, donations can be made to the National Brain Tumor Society, the Denver Botanic Gardens or the Rocky Mountain Horse Rescue. A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 28, 2023 at 1 o'clock in the afternoon at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 2626 E. 7th Avenue Parkway, Denver Colorado.
