James Hutcheson Obituary

Hutcheson, Dr. James Kent
November 8, 1940 - October 4, 2019
Social Entrepreneur, Community Leader and Minister

Dr. James Kent Hutcheson was an incredible man of vision, faith and perseverance. Kent founded Colorado Uplift, Elevate USA, and Urban Youth Ministries. His impact and legacy has been felt globally, and all who know him are eternally challenged by his vision and mission. Despite his 13 year battle with Leukemia, he still had a contagious smile. In 1958, at South High School the Denver Post presented Kent the MVP Gold Helmet award. He went on to play football at Wheaton College and then catalyzed The Great Commission Training Centers in Asia which then multiplied throughout the globe. He then returned home to impact Denver's Urban challenges, creating Colorado's most successful inner city youth program which has been recognized locally and nationally countless times. He passes the torch to his precious wife of 53 years, Diane, his children Shauna, Jon, James and eight grandchildren. He will be profoundly missed but we are all celebrating, Kent most of all, his home going to be with his savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. His memoir, 'A Most Incredible Adventure' will be Available on Amazon in November, but you can download this amazing book at http://bit.ly/2Vmld9R today. Kent's memorial will be at Cherry Creek Presbyterian Church, Saturday, October 12th at 11:00am. Yesterday's newspaper brought the news of my cousin passing. I only remember meeting him in person one time, however my impression was of a warm, open, and caring man. Losing a loved one is never easy. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Kent and I were teammates of the 1961 nationally ranked undefeated football team at Wheaton College. We gathered together back at Wheaton in the fall of 2011 for a 50th reunion celebration. We recall sitting next to Kent at the football game and and laughed at his humerous banter throughout the afternoon. A great Servant Leader!

Aloha!

What a tremendous gift and privilege it has been to have been a part of Kent's life here in Denver. Sharing a lifetime of friendship with two of his closest and dearest Wheaton College friends, John and Anita Nelson, my life has been deeply enriched by knowing Kent and Diane. My heart and love will forever be with him and his entire family,

Kent's boldness in carefronting activists in the University of the Philippines when I was in college,, and his passion for fulfilling the Great Commission made a deep impact on me as a new Christian. I learned to make a stand for my faith, develop convictions, and become bold in my witness. His influence continued in the Great Commission Training Center he was directing when I joined staff. He and his wife, Diane, discipled me in those early years and laid a good foundation that stays with me until now. At another critical decision-making time in our ministry, they were again instrumental in helping us pursue the vision God has placed in our hearts and remained in our country for greater impact instead of taking on an international assignment.
It has been a great privilege and honor to know Kent and Diane who are great spiritual leaders and models of faithful love and service of ourLord!

Our dear friend Kent Hutcheson was instrumental in us moving to the Philippines in 1973, where we served under his leadership at the Great Commission Training Center. We have fond memories of his contagious smile & laugh and his unwavering commitment to the God's Great Commission. In 2 Timothy 4:7 the Apostle Paul said, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." Kent Hutcheson fought the good fight, finished his course and kept the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ!
