LaMeta Lubchenco Obituary

Dr. LaMeta Dahl Lubchenco, a pioneer pediatrician in Denver, mother of 6 daughters and champion of opportunities for girls, died peacefully from natural causes in her home, surrounded by family on January 6, 2014. She was 96 years old. Born in Elgin, North Dakota in 1917, she graduated from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, MN in 1937 and received her MD in 1941 from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine. She came to Denver in 1942 as a Resident Physician in Pediatrics at Denver Children's Hospital and in 1944 joined a private pediatric practice, "The Children's Clinic." From 1946 to 1952 she taught full-time in the Pediatric Department at the University of Colorado School of Medicine where she was twice voted "Outstanding Teacher of the Year" by the medical students. After her first daughters were born, she transitioned to working part-time in the City and County of Denver well baby clinics so she could combine work and family - a model that inspired her daughters and numerous other young women. Dr. Dahl married Dr. Michael A Lubchenco of Denver in 1946. They had six daughters. She was an active leader in Mile High Girl Scouting and a prominent supporter of her daughters' swimming and diving program, the University of Denver Hilltoppers. After retiring, she travelled extensively and volunteered at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the Conflict Center, and the Colorado Alumni Group of the College of St. Catherine. She was a charter member of the 10:30 Catholic Community in Denver. Hobbies included reading, playing bridge and cribbage, decorating cakes and playing with and inspiring her grandchildren, great grandchildren and their friends. Having suffered from polio at age 2, she took a keen interest in the disease throughout her professional career. As a pediatrician at the CU Medical School in 1946, she was responsible for the care of 175 acute polio patients in the last polio epidemic in Colorado history and she helped inoculate Denver second graders with the first batch of polio vaccine when it became available in 1954. She was preceded in death by her brother Robert Dahl, husband Mike, daughter Nancy and grandson Alexei Menge. She is survived by her daughters Dr. Jane Lubchenco (Dr. Bruce Menge) of Corvallis OR, Annette Lubchenco Donaghy, MS (Dr. Jay Donaghy) of Boulder, CO, Mary Lou Lubchenco, MSW (Dr. Frank Barron) of Colorado Springs, CO, Peggy Lubchenco, MS (Dr. Steve Gaines) of Santa Barbara CA, and Carolyn Lubchenco Wiese, JD (Bill Wiese, J.D.) of Denver, 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. A memorial celebration will be held at the 10:30 Catholic Community at Capital Heights Presbyterian Church at 1100 Fillmore on January 25 at 3pm. Donations: St. Catherine University: stkate.edu/giveonline or by mail: St. Catherine University, 2004 Randolph Ave Mail F-12, Saint Paul, MN 55105.

I spent a lot of time with the Lubchenco family growing up and they were a wonderful family. I admired LaMeta for never noticing she was disabled. My thoughts are with all her wonderful daughters who were some of the nicest people I ever knew.

My deepest sympathies go out to all of the Lubchenco girls. Your mom was a big part of my years at St. Phil's. We were lucky indeed to have her as our scout leader.I have MANY happy memories of our camping trips and our meetings in the basement at St. Phil's. I loved my friendship with all of the Lubchencos, especially you, Annette! I'm sure your mom lived life to the fullest. She was always a powerhouse. I know you will miss her dearly.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of the Lubchenco family. I was fortunate to have LaMeta as my Girl Scout leader for several years. We felt so much safer on those winter trips to the lodges having a pediatrician and surgeon along with us!
Hello to Jane, Annette, Mary Lou, Peggy and Carolyn. I am in awe of all you have accomplished.

I have fond memories of Mrs. Lubchenco's kindness when we were in Girl Scouts at St. Philomena's. I am so sorry for your loss.

My thoughts and prayers are with LaMeta's family and her 10:30 Catholic Community, of which I was privileged to be a member. I remember my, then, husband and I bringing our new baby daughter Leah to church and LaMeta made a bee-line to us after Mass. Her smile, congratulations and adoration of our baby was such a loving, welcoming act. I was also privileged to see some of LaMeta's nativity sets and hear stories of the inspiring traditions behind them. Special love to Annette who helped our family so much! With gratitude, Monte Clarke

Knowing LaMeta was a privilege that enhanced my life, my neighborhood, my family and my church. I will always remember her fondly and the smile and enthusiasm for life and learning that she showed. She was always eager to show her collection of nativities and explain their histories and stories of where she had traveled and how she obtained them. Just today I packed up two receiving blanket that LaMeta made with her loving hands for my daughters that will now be used by their babies. She will be remembered for the exceptional woman she was and be missed. The Adler Finney family sends their condolences to the family.

The few times I visited Denver as a medical student, I visited Dr. Dah in her home. These visits and what I learned from Dr. Dahl helped me be a better person and physician. I benefitted as did the medical students I later taught, passing on some of her wisdom and inspiration.

Thank you, Dr. Dahl.

It was a great privilege to have known LaMeta and Michael Lubchenco. Their gusto for life, and caring respect for the people around them was truly an inspiration. I loved their stories and the twinkles in their eyes. I expect to see a new bright star in the heavens. LaMeta Dahl Lubchenco will leave a vacancy on this earth that will take many good people to fill. Condolences to her family. Vicki Anderson

Mrs. Lubchenco was a huge inspiration to me. I met her through the DU Hilltoppers when I was a young child and swam with her daughter Carolyn. She was warm, extremely intelligent, and far ahead of her time! I asked her to be my confirmation sponsor because I looked up to her so much! She will always hold a special place in my heart - as she will countless others. Thank you Mrs. Lubchenco for making such a positive impact in my life!

Oh my, oh my, what wonderful memories I have of your mother...who was a dear, dear friend of my own mother, Jessica Barnard Moore Eisele. Love and Blessings to each of you, as you release your sweet mother to Eternal Peace.

Although I never met Lameta, I felt as if I knew her through my friendship with her daughters Jane and Peggy. I heard many memorable stories from their childhood. And many of the qualities I admire in Peggy and Jane clearly were a result of LaMeta's nature and nurturing. What an amazing woman. Her remarkablelegacy lives on in her devoted daughters, grandchildren, and the many people who admired her and whom she helped and mentored.

My sincere condolences to Dr.Lubchenco's family with her passing. She was my "across the alley neighor" for fifty plus years. She was always upbeat and friendly whenever we'd run into each other. She was an inspiration to me as she had a limp resulting from her polio, but it never slowed her down either physically or emotionally as she traveled extensively in her senior years after she was widowed. May God rest her soul.
