Mark Outman Obituary

Mark A. Outman, a proud Denver native, passed away in his Montclair home on December 28, 2020. He leaves behind a heartbroken community of family and friends. A devoted son to his late parents, Harold R. & Allene J. Outman, Mark knew early on that Architecture was his calling. He completed his first internship with the prolific architect, Charles "Chuck" Sink, who left a legacy of modernism in Denver. After completing a Bachelor of Architecture at Tulane University in 1980, he worked for Peter Dominick and Associates, HOK Architects, and Anderson Mason Dale Architects. Working closely with friend and mentor, Ron Mason FAIA, the Rocky Mountain Hall at Western Wyoming College is just one example of the clarity in his thought process that was always evident in the architecture he created. His intellectual energy brought out the best in those that worked around him.

Mark later earned a Master of Architecture in 1986 from Yale University in New Haven, CT, and joined Caesar Pelli and Associates, where he collaborated on high-profile projects such as the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (once the tallest buildings in the world), and the World Financial Center Battery Park Tower IV in New York City. After joining Fentress Architects in 1995, Mark lent his design sense and creativity to numerous remarkable civic projects including airport terminals, sport stadiums, city halls, courthouses, and museums – both nationally and internationally. These include Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX and Empower Stadium at Mile High in Denver.

Mark received hundreds of awards, honors, and recognitions throughout his highly successful career. In 2017, Mark was recognized by the American Institute of Architects' College of Fellows for his contributions to the field of architecture. Mark will be remembered as a thoughtful and intelligent presence with a dry and subtle sense of humor. He was a life-long aesthete and never stopped learning about his craft. He leaves behind the love of his life, his daughter Kelsey Kirkwood Outman (New York City), loving partner Susan Routt (Boulder, CO), former wife Susan Redow Martinez (Falls Church, VA), brother James (Cleveland, OH), and several nieces and nephews. He will also be greatly missed by his Border Collie Topper, with whom he loved to hike and take long walks.

A memorial is planned for Spring 2021, and will be announced per COVID regulations. Mark's family asks that any interim donations be made to the Denver Dumb Friends League, as a foundation in Mark's honor is being established. Mark's family would also like to thank the hard work of the Denver Police who showed amazing courage and compassion.

My heart broke yesterday at the news of this. Mark was my first mentor during my years at Fentress Architects. The last time I saw him, a couple of years ago, he greeted me like an old friend. Kelsey my heart goes out to you and your whole family. You, he and I once did a lego competition at the Denver Zoo. His love and respect was always evident and for years he left that studio everyday at 6 pm sharp to be with his daughter. There are not enough words to express the respect or the sorrow. Take comfort in knowing we are all here for you in this very difficult time. Jacqueline (Wisniewski) Trice

We've been left so saddened as a family, just neighbors, by the loss of Mark Outman, even though we'd never met, or knew him directly. We appreciated receiving the information on Mark a few days ago and look forward to attending, directly or on-line, his memorial later this Spring. Laurie, Miki, Keita, Emma - 800 Monaco

We did know Mark, however I had driven by his house and saw him several times. My sister and brother in law live 2 blocks away. I live close by and felt terrible for what happened to this good neighbor. We will always remember him and thank him for being part of our neighborhood.

I used to clean house for Mark. He was one of the kindest people I've ever met. Kelsey, he loved you very much. As did your grandmother, Allene. Sending lots of love and prayers to the Outman family.

I was honored to work with Mark for 13 years. From the beginning, I knew he was a kindred spirit. I always appreciated his wry sense of humor, and especially his intellect and superb sense of design. Now that he's gone, of course I wish I'd known him better. He adored Kelsey and was so happy with his partner Susan. He frequently went home over the lunch hour to be with Topper--I'm sure he misses Mark, too. Thank you Mark for what you added to our lives!

It was such a pleasure to have known Mark throughout our junior and senior high school years. He always had a caring smile, was well liked and will be greatly missed! I will hold the memories we shared very dearly. My prayers and love go to Kelsey, Susan and his dear dog Topper.

I did not know Mark personally but this tragedy has haunted me since I first heard about what happened. My condolences to his daughter, his dog, his colleagues and friends. I trust Topper is being cared for by a loved one; Border Collies are so very sensitive, this had to be so hard on him. Heartbroken and keeping you all in my thoughts.

Mark was the kindest and most loving of men. He worshiped his beautiful daughter Kelsey and was a proud father and pillar of strength, support and joy. His positive impact made on this world will never be forgotten by all of us touched by his work ethic, spirit and love. I'm proud to have called him my friend.
