Nile Root Obituary

ROOT, NILE

-Photographer and teacher, born in Denver in 1926, died in Tucson, AZ on April 2, 2004. Although he earned his living by practicing and teaching scientific and medical photography, his passion was photography as a fine art. His expressive photographs appeared in museums and galleries in the U.S. and abroad. His website, www.niler.com, has a portfolio of his photographs.

-A graduate of North High School (class of '45), he served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. In Denver during the '50s his camera store, Photography Workshop, served as a gallery where he exhibited his own work and that of MinoR White, Walter Chappell, Syl Labrot, and Arnold Gasson.

-After heading the departments of medical photography in Rose Memorial and

Children's hospitals, Nile taught for 12 years at the Rochester (NY) Institute of Technology, retiring in 1986 as Professor Emeritus and with the Award for Outstanding Teaching.

-He was predeceased by his parents, Victor Root and Ella May Birdsall-Holaway, and his sister, Madeline Root Proulx. He is survived by his wife, Abigail, his son, James (Pamela) Root and granddaughter, Lena, of Los Angeles, his aunt, Ida Skinner Root of Big Springs, NE, and his nephew, Victor (Suzanne) Proulx, of Denver.
