Patricia "Patty" Reynolds Barnard, born June 2, 1922 in Van Nuys, CA, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2012 at Vi Care Center, Highlands Ranch, CO. The daughter of Walter E. and Gladys R. Bierkamp, Patty graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1940 and Pomona College in 1944. Patty married the love of her life, Rollin (Barney) Barnard, September 15, 1943. They enjoyed more than 65 years together and are survived by their three children: Mike (Sue) Barnard of Shelton, WA, Becky (Paul) Wulfestieg of Lakewood, WA and Laurie (Ken) Kostelecky of Littleton, CO. Patty also took great delight in her 6 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Patty loved to write and worked for a time as a journalist. As her family grew, she became somewhat of a "professional volunteer", avidly supporting Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, American Field Service, PTA, P.E.O., Appaloosa Horse Club, Morris Animal Foundation, Digit Fund, National Western Stock Show, Denver Botanic Gardens, Classic Horse Show, and Denver Zoo. Patty's greatest passions, however, were her extensive gardens and her beloved animals. She and Barney raised appaloosa horses and mules, along with Australian Shepherd dogs, and she had almost every kind of pet imaginable during her 90 years. Patty was well-known for her optimism and her zest for life, and she will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 21 at 2:00pm in the Centennial Room at Vi at Highlands Ranch (bright colors/party attire please!). The family thanks Vi Care Center staff and Denver Hospice for their amazing compassion and loving care during Patty's final days. Donations to the Denver Botanic Gardens are suggested.
