Robert McCurdy Obituary

Robert Edwin McCurdy, retired surgeon and long-time Denver resident, died peacefully at his home of 60 years on Sunday, February 16, 2014 surrounded by his loving family and dog. He was 91 years old. Bob was born in Purcell, Oklahoma on September 18, 1922, the youngest of four children born to William Claude McCurdy and Mary Emily (Maxwell) McCurdy. He graduated from Purcell High School in 1939 as class valedictorian and later from the University of Oklahoma in 1942 where he served as president of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. While at OU, he played guard on the basketball team and earned the nickname "Manacles McCurdy." Bob married the love of his life, Carolyn Anne Faught, on March 20, 1947 and they moved to Denver upon the completion of his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine and residency from the University of Maryland. A captain in the U.S. Army, Bob was assigned to the Army Medical Corps and was sent to Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado. Bob completed his surgical training at the Denver Veterans Hospital and subsequently received his American Board of Surgery Certification. He entered into private practice in 1953 and practiced surgery for the next 40 years at Presbyterian Medical Center (Chief of Surgery), and St. Luke's (later merged and known as P/SL) and St. Joseph Hospital. Prior to his retirement in 1993, Bob served as president of the Denver Academy of Surgery, the Colorado Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, and the Western Surgical Association. He also served as the senior delegate to the American Medical Association for 18 years. In addition to his private practice, Bob was an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Colorado. He also served on the Board of Directors for Health One and was on the Admissions Committee for the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Bob was a passionate golfer and fly fisherman. He loved Dewar's scotch, anything chocolate, all dogs, especially Welsh Terriers, and every sports team from the University of Oklahoma. He had a brilliant, agile mind, an infectious, hilarious sense of humor and a deep faith in God. Bob considered himself the luckiest man on the planet and lived life burning the candle white-hot at both ends. Bob was a member of Cherry Hills Country Club for 50 years and St. John's Cathedral. Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Carolyn Faught McCurdy and by his son, Robert Maxwell McCurdy, who died at age 19 in an automobile accident in Winchester, VA on May 21, 1975. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, William Claude McCurdy, Jr., Maxwell McCurdy, and his sister, Marrion Q (Cissy) Giles. He is survived by his daughters, Nancy McCurdy (John Knudsen) and Kathryn McCurdy Pride (Charles), his four grandchildren, Robert McCurdy Pride, Walker McCurdy Pride, Caroline Neville Knudsen and Margaret Maxwell Knudsen; his special friend, Margaret (Peg) DeBiase; numerous nephews and nieces, many friends, and his beloved Welsh Terrier, Toddi III. In the words of Charles Dickens, "And can it be that, in a world so full and busy, the loss of one creature makes a void in our hearts so wide and deep that nothing but the width and depth of eternity can fill it up?" God bless and Godspeed, Bob! A funeral service will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at St. John's Cathedral, 1350 Washington, Denver, CO. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift to St. Anne's Episcopal School, 2701 S. York, Denver, CO 80210 or St. John's Cathedral, 1350 Washington, Denver, CO 80203.

Gosh, our dads were best buddies for many a year. I was so sad to hear of his passing, and now I know that sorrow myself. My dad, Ross Miller, passed away on May 10, also at age 91.(http://www.ranfranzandvinefh.com/obits/obituary.php?id=569481) They have always stayed in touch, and even this year your dad called, and got my dad in tears "he's such a good friend..." Sweet sweet fellows.
I'd like to think they are fly fishing or golfing somewhere together again in younger bodies. Weren't we the luckiest people to have such wonderful dads. I could not reach you at his old phone #, so I am leaving this message here from my whole family to yours. Our sincerest condolences and comfort to you. Nancy & Kathy:
Steve told me about your dad's passing. I am so sorry for your loss. Your dad left an indelible impression of pure optimism on me as a child and now as an older adult. All I remember is his grand smile and his generous nature towards everyone. He was a great human. We have been blessed.

Dear Nancy and Kathy,
I am so sorry to hear of your dads passing. My dad was Dr. Herb Kennison and your folks would come to many a party at our house while I was growing up. I so remember both your mom and dad. Your dad was the best! He always remembered my brother's pom pom guns and would mention it every time I saw him. He pierced my ears even, my dad would not let me get them pierced unless a surgeon did it! I even had Novocain for the procedure, he also stitched up my hand when I had a run in with a glass door accidently. I would go to the hospital many a time with my dad and was always glad when I got to see your dad. What a great man, his smile, his hug, everything. Thinking of you all, Wendy Kennison Watson

I had the privilege of meeting Dr. McCurdy in June, 2008 while visiting his brother, Maxwell and nephew, Tom McCurdy in Purcell Oklahoma. We were both in Purcell for the PHS Reunion. Dr. McCurdy was such a joy to be around. He was always smiling/laughing and enjoyed visiting with everyone he came in contact with, making each person feel special. I know he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

I am a nurse @ Presbyterian/ st Luke's and also a former patient of Dr. McCurdy. He was an excellent surgeon as far as I'm concerned, whenever we met in the hallway in the hospital he would ask how I was doing and gave me a hug. I never remember seeing him without a smile on his face. I will miss him.

We have lost a very good, warm, decent man. My mother, Connie Ernest, was his office manager for many years for his private surgical practice. She passed just last October, and he called her many times during her illness to cheer her up and check on her. They're probably toasting a Dewar's scotch right now in heaven. I always looked forward to my big ol' Dr. McCurdy hugs! My condolences to the family.

Dear Kathy and Nancy, I always loved your Dad. He was always so kind and funny. He never lost that accent! Years ago when my mom was still alive we would see him at King Soopers. It was always fun to hear the two of them talk! Hope you all are doing ok! We're thinking of you!

Through many decades, for as far back as I can remember, my family, above all my parents, Timmie Kulish and the late Jim Kulish, cherished the presence of our next door neighbor, the Doctor -- he never failed to express infectious joy and good cheer whenever he saw us; he cared, and let us know he cared. Thanks, Dr. McCurdy.

Bob was a larger than life character, a friend of 30+ years who will be sadly missed by us both. With a razor sharp mind & wicked sense of humour, Bob kept us amused and on our toes in equal proportions. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his extended family.
