Bevan Haycock Obituary

1928 ~ 2018
Bevan Orlando Haycock (89) passed away on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, Utah, following a brief illness brought on by causes incident to age.
Bevan was born to Orlando and Wandamere Sorenson Haycock on October 18, 1928, at Ogden, Utah. He grew up in Pueblo, Colorado, where his father worked for the Western Union Telegraph. He attended Fountain Elementary, Park View Elementary, Park Hill Junior High, and Centennial High Schools in Pueblo. In the 8th grade, Bevan placed second in a national handwriting competition with contestants from junior and senior high schools, and business colleges in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. His penmanship was always admired by his family. At age 14, Bevan was elected vice-president of the freshman class at Centennial High School. He played the clarinet in the band, was a member of the ROTC rifle team, and played on the football team. Bevan graduated from Centennial High School in 1946. Throughout his high school and college years, Bevan worked during the summer months and Christmas holiday breaks at the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad yards in Pueblo.
Bevan attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, from 1946 to 1950, earning varsity letters in football and wrestling, and graduated in June 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Marketing with minors in Spanish and Accounting. Following graduation, Bevan served as a full-time missionary in the Mexican Mission from June 1950 to December 1952, laboring in Ciudad Juarez, La Caseta, Fresnillo, Cuernavaca (branch president), Ciudad Madero (district president), and Mexico City (mission secretary).
Following his mission to Mexico, Bevan enlisted in the United States Navy to fulfill his delayed military obligation. He graduated from Officer Candidate School, was commissioned an Ensign and designated a line officer and eligible to command at sea. However, his entire 3-year naval career was spent working in naval communications intelligence in and around Washington D.C.
In 1953, Bevan met Marilyn Croshaw in Washington D.C. Following her service as a full-time missionary, they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 27, 1956. Shortly after they were married, Bevan and Marilyn moved to Mexico City, Mexico, where Bevan was employed by the Church Genealogical Society to supervise microfilming work in Mexico. After two years in Mexico, they returned to Provo where Bevan earned a Master's Degree in Spanish at Brigham Young University in 1959. Following graduate work at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, Bevan accepted a faculty position in 1964 at New Mexico State University and moved his family to Las Cruces, New Mexico, where Bevan taught Spanish until his retirement in 1992. He and Marilyn have resided in Spanish Fork, Utah, for the past 26 years.
Bevan and his family were blessed by many opportunities to serve in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a full-time missionary in Mexico (1950-1952), as Bishop of the Las Cruces Second Ward (1974-1980), and as a counselor in the Presidency of the Las Cruces New Mexico Stake (1980-1982). With Marilyn as his companion, he served as President of the Chile Santiago North Mission (1982-1984) and as a counselor in the Presidency of the Santo Domingo Dominican Republic Temple (2000-2001).
Bevan and Marilyn made their family their highest priority in life, and Bevan's greatest joy in life was time spent with his family. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marilyn Croshaw, and their six children: Carla (Craig Farnsworth) of Midway, Utah; Matthew Bevan (Dixie Simonis) of Beaverton, Oregon; Camille (Timothy Croxton) of Littleton, Colorado; Douglas Reed (Kathy Kraft) of Sedalia, Colorado; Lyle Byron (Tammy Sadler) of Mapleton, Utah; and Margaret (Judson Smedley) of Draper, Utah. Bevan is also survived by all of their 25 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren, and by his younger sister Audrey Haycock Wittwer. He was preceded in death by his parents and his older sister Joyce Haycock Sanders.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, May 2, 2018, 6:00 - 8:00pm at the Wolf Hollow 1st Ward building located at 870 East Canyon Road, Spanish Fork, Utah. It's hard to recall any memories of my Las Cruces childhood without the Haycocks as part of the story. Bevan is one of the few people to give me a nickname. Since Heather isn't a nickname-friendly name he called me Heather Beth even though that wasn't my middle name. It made me feel special and loved whenever he called me that. I loved spending Sunday nights at the Haycocks eating homemade ice cream while watching Bevan eating bread and onions soaked in milk. He'd tell story after story that had us laughing until either tears came out our eyes or ice cream out our nose. Even though I was a tiny little shy girl, he never made me feel less important. He saw me, he heard me, and he loved me. I look forward to the day when I can see him again with that twinkle in his eye and in his bubbly voice say, Heather Beth!

Much love to Marilyn and the entire family.

When my husband Ron and I moved from California to Utah we were in a rental for a while because our house was being built. When it was time to move to our new house,we needed some help moving some items from our rental. Bevan showed up with a truck and a trailer to help us out! That was so kind of him and it meant a lot to us! Bevan and Marilyn had us over for enchiladas and they were delicious! To this day, we still use their recipe! Love, Ron and Jeanne Sanders

I have great memories of Uncle Bevan. He always reminded me of my grandpa Orlando (Link) Haycock. Soft spoken, kind, and always had a twinkle in his eye. He and Aunt Marilyn have always been examples to me of warmth, happiness, and love. My kindest regards and condolences to Marilyn and my cousins.

I remember Bevan's kindness and non-judgemental treatment of Bill and me. I was surprised that he would think me capable of being Relief Society president, but was thinking who I would ask to be my councilors, when he knocked on the door.
I love his wife Marilyn. She is a perfect example to me of the ideal homemaker. From our families viewpoint the Haycock family is the greatest.
