Bill Bean Obituary

Bill G Bean

1947 ~ 2023

Our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and uncle, Bill G Bean of Salt Lake City, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2023 with his family by his side, after a year of declining health. Bill was born on December 22, 1947 to Glenn Cluff Bean and Wilma Sumner Bean in Rexburg, Idaho were he spent his youth. Bill graduated from Madison High School. He went on to Utah State University, graduating with a B.S. degree in Physical Education (Athletic Training) in 1971. Proudly affiliating with the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity that gave him lifelong friends. He received his M.S. degree in Physical Education (Sports Medicine) from the University of Utah in 1978. Bill later decided to pursue a B.S degree in Physical Therapy (1986) from the University of Utah. In college, Bill joined ROTC. When he graduated, he went into the Army as a Medical Service Corps Officer at Fort Ord, CA. During this time he was sent to Germany for REFORGER Exercises. He was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant. Bill started his Athletic Training career at Washington State University. When he left WSU, he became the Athletic Trainer for the Utah Stars, an American Basketball Association Team. When the Stars folded, Bill spent the remainder of his career as the Director of Sports Medicine (Head Athletic Trainer) in the Athletic Department at the University of Utah. Bill was a true Ute through and through. He loved working with the athletes and student trainers. He thoroughly enjoyed teaching and sharing his knowledge with his students. Bill taught by example. He was always positive, met challenges head on and showed compassion and concern for others. He was always respectful. His great sense of humor, infectious laugh and ability to have fun will be greatly missed by everyone who knew this wonderful and special man. He made an impression on his students and those who worked along side of him. He was a trusted advisor and many looked up to him. Many of his students became his lifelong friends. Bill had a passion for Sports Medicine and was delighted and proud when his son, Justin, followed in his footsteps. Bill retired from the U of U in 2008 after 32 years. Bill met the love of his life, Nancy Pickett, shortly after he returned from Lake Placid where he was the Athletic Trainer for the US Nordic Ski Team for the 1980 Winter Olympics. Bill and Nancy were married on July 12, 1984. Bill adored Nancy and she him, calling her his Nancy girl. They had an amazing partnership and marriage. They cultivated friendships in Salt Lake and around the world where they adventured. They loved to travel. When Nancy was mobilized to Desert Storm in 1990, Bill became Mr. Mom to Brandon who had just turned a year old. Bill was a wonderful Dad and role model to his two sons, Brandon and Justin. They had a very close relationship. When Brandon married Jeslynn, he welcomed her into the family. And shortly later a beautiful granddaughter joined our family and filled him with joy. His family were constant sources of pride and delight. Bill loved all sports. In his younger years, he was an avid racketball player, winning some competitions. Bill enjoyed mountain biking with his wife and friends (before bikes had shocks on them!). He owned a Laser sailboat and loved sailing with Nancy and later the boys. Bill loved fly fishing so much, he had a room dedicated to tying his own flies. He spent endless hours tying flies and building several fly rods. His passion was taking the boys fishing. He also enjoyed golfing with his sons and friends. Bill loved to ski at Snowbird. He especially loved skiing with his family. Nancy and the boys have many fond memories of fishing, golfing, camping in their tent trailer and skiing with Dad.

Bill is survived by his wife Nancy, his son Brandon (Jeslynn), his son Justin and granddaughter Baylor Rose. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Sherrie Bean Thomas and her husband Scott Thomas. There will be a private graveside service for immediate family at Mt Olivet Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a Memorial Fund has been set up to honor Bill's legacy. This Fund will be used to recognize Athletic Trainer's and the work they provide in honor of what Bill loved and dedicated so much of his life. This can be done through Bill Bean Memorial Fund Link: https://ugive.app.utah.edu/designation/221?specialInstructions=In%20honor%20and%20memory%20of%20Bill%20Bean%20to%20support%20Utah%20Athletics%20Training,%20Appeal%20Code:%2057901 by sending donations to the Bill Bean Memorial Fund at the University of Utah Crimson Club, 1825 South Campus Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah 84112

Like Jeff Braman, I knew Bill at USU. We were SAE brothers and good friends. I claim 3 options of knowing Bill; friend, school and other. I can add nothing to Bill's success in life, except, perhaps, the fact that he was a product of wonderful, loving parents right out of the starting gate. I was attending college in Logan from Hawaii and spent several Thanksgiving and Xmas breaks in Rexburg. They are still some of my fondest holiday memories. What a friendly and giving family. Rest easy my friend knowing that I and many others are better people for having known you. Mahalo. Aloha, Doug Walker.

I had a knee injury that I thought was the end of my football career. I was concerned that I would lose my scholarship and be sent home. It was Bill Bean who told me exactly what to do after my surgery to be able to play the game I loved since 7 years old. I was able to get back on the field and fulfill my lifelong dream of playing pro. Thanks Bill Bean, gone but never forgotten.

When I suffered the neck and shoulder injury that ended my career, Bill was there for me - physically, mentally, emotionally, personally and professionally. I was so down he probably saved my life! Bill was the very best Athletic Trainer in the country - respected and admired and honored by all of us who knew him! Every college team I worked with around the country had a Trainer who knew the legendary expertise and gentle genius of Bill Bean. Thanks for taking care of me! RIP my friend!

Bill was such a wonderful and knowledgeable person, especially when it came to caring for my feet. I´m still wearing the orthotics that he made me many years ago. He was a very great man.

Bill and I were fraternity brothers at USU. He was a year my senior and called me "Jeffer". He was very kind to me at an age when many young men were "flexing their muscles". We laughed a lot over silly things. I have not spoken to Bill since college days but when I learned of his death I cried. I am crying now.

God just doesn´t make em any better than Billy Bean!! I was blessed during my years as assistant coach and intern coach at Utah to work with Bill.
We shared the same superstition that if we tied our tie right the first time on game day, that we were going to play good!! He was just such a great person and great friend!!! We were all blessed by him!!
My deepest sympathies to his beautiful wife and family.
Rest in peace my friend.

To the Bean family,
I don't think our paths ever crossed, but I am sure by now you know how many paths Bill crossed during his lifetime and how many people he touched during his career. For me, I first met Bill when I was a young/first time Head ATC at UNLV. During my time, Bill became a mentor and a friend. He was the type of person that no matter the time of day, he was always there to help. Once we left the same conference, we did not always connect as frequently, but everytime I ran into Bill, it was like we talked every day. Truly a remarkable person and certainly an exceptional professional. Cherish the great times and all the wonderful memories that you had together and I am sure you will receive the same in this written condolences. Very sad to hear this news. Take care and God Bless. RIP Bill.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of my friend and mentor, Bill Bean. I first met Bill in 1989, while as a senior in high school, he willingly met with me to discuss physical therapy and sports medicine as a potential career. Bill was then my final clinical instructor in graduate school, which was a highlight of my graduate school education. Bill also introduced me into the subspecialty of foot and ankle rehab and orthotic fabrication which helped me obtain my first job out of graduate school.

He was not only a brilliant clinician, but he was also a kind and compassionate teacher. He always took the time to explain things to me in a way that I could understand, and he was always there to offer support and guidance. I was so excited to recently meet Bill´s youngest son Justin, and to find that he was following in his fathers footsteps as a physical therapist / athletic trainer. Now that Justin works with me as a physical therapist, I can see the same passion in Justin that I saw in his father, Bill. I want to let Justin know that I am thinking of him during this difficult time. I know that Bill was so proud of Justin, and I am sure that Justin will continue to make his father proud. I will miss Bill dearly. He was a wonderful man, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

As I sit here looking at the pic of Bill's friendly face, I am taken back to the days in the training room at the U before practices and games in the 70's. Bill was an energy force. Most often smiling, brimming with positivity, perseverance, and professionalism. I always felt seen, heard, and appreciated as a ballplayer and a person...all in the course of a fantastic tape job! Certainly, a life to celebrate.
Thank you Bill!

Bill was my trainer when I was at the U! He was more than just a trainer, he was a psychologist a friend and one of the people you always wanted to be around. My condolences to his family and all of you will be in my prayers. I think often of Beaner and the man he was and the example he set for all of us. He set a very high bar and one that I know I will never reach! Thanks for everything Beaner and I´ll see you on the other side. RIP

Words would not do any Justice that Bill deserved - I owe my entire career and much of my success to Bill for all he did for me as an Athletic Training Student.
It was such an honor (and a whole lot of fun) to be apart of the `Good old days ` back in the later 70s - to 85´
Bill provided many opportunities for me as a young Athletic Training Student- including Instructor opportunities - these formed the foundation for induction into my college Hall of Fame where I Started and retired as the Head Athletic Trainer after 36 years - and a California Athletic Trainer Hall of Fame Inductee in 2020 . These wonderful awards would NOT have been possible without Bill Bean´s mentorship!!

I will forever remember Bill and the amazing memories!!

May God Bless Nancy and the family

With much Love

Bill was a great mentor to me. He was always willing to advise, consult, and teach. He was one of the finest teachers I ever had. He would go out of his way to help me out as a young trainer and PT. The world lost one of the good ones. God bless!

When I was a player Bill was would tape my ankles. He was like the psychiatrist. He is always be asking me. What do I need to do to win this game? And I would tell him if you just taped it a little tighter it´ll make me run faster. He would laugh, but he always made me feel good. Then when I was a coach at the University of Utah as an assistant, we would always play racquetball when we both had free times, but I never did beat them in racquetball, which was OK because it only made me better, I give my condolences to the family and his friends to all the love in my heart. Thank you Bill Bean.

I first met Bill while he was the athletic trainer for the Utah Stars and I was the athletic trainer for the Harlem Globetrotters. Bill was still with the Stars when the Head Athletic Training job was open at Utah State University. Ladell Anderson, Athletic Director for USU and former Head coach of the Utah Stars, offered the job to Bill. Bill said no and remained with the Stars. After Bill had turned down the job, Ladell hired me, Dale Mildenberger. I retired from that job, at USU 38 years later in 2013. So, I owe my career to one word from Bill Bean, "No". When Bill was hired at Utah we became very close colleages and friends. I will miss him and remember him fondly.
