Charles Schmidt Obituary

1927 ~ 2013
Charles DuWayne Schmidt, age 86, passed away on October 2, 2013, due to a variety of health issues incident to old age and a long battle with Parkinson's disease.
DuWayne was born on September 30, 1927, in West Jordan, Utah, the first child of Charles and Ella Schmidt. He had a wonderful childhood growing up in Midvale and Mt. Pleasant, Utah where he had many adventures with his younger brother Don and their two dogs. He grew up in a musical family, and enjoyed singing duets with his father Charles, usually accompanied by his mother at the piano. He graduated from Jordon High School in 1945 and enrolled at the University of Utah, where he was active in Lamda Delta Sigma (serving as both Beta and InterChapter President). There he met his future wife Alice Cannon, and was greatly influenced by Lowell Bennion at the LDS Institute. After graduation (1949) DuWayne began his life-long passion for medicine at the University of Utah Medical School and DuWayne and Alice were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 26, 1952. After completing his Medical degree in 1954, continued medical training and military service in U. S. Air Force led to a series of moves around the country (Minneapolis MN, Tucson AZ, Rochester MN). He returned to Salt Lake City in 1961 to join the Salt Lake Clinic. At each stop along the way another child was added to the family, and DuWayne and Alice were ultimately blessed with six children. They also loved and welcomed five Indian Placement children into their home for extended periods of time.
DuWayne's life was marked by remarkable energy and dedication to those things he loved and believed in: his deep faith in God and the restored gospel of Jesus Christ; his wife and family; and the ideals and practice of medicine. DuWayne treasured his membership in the LDS church and served faithfully in many positions. His temple recommend was the most import slip of paper in his wallet. He especially loved the Boy Scout program where he enthusiastically served in many roles over many years, including scoutmaster of troop 304. He was awarded the Silver Beaver in 1984. All four of his sons and all eighteen of his grandsons achieved the Eagle rank. He loved his LDS mission to Mongolia (1993-94) where he and Alice were called to serve as part of the first group of LDS couple missionaries allowed into that country. DuWayne's deep religious faith was inseparable from his commitment to Alice and his children. Although Alice and DuWayne were remarkably different in personality, their shared and deep-rooted testimonies and love of God permeated their marriage and family life together. His children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren all knew and loved him, and he knew and deeply loved each of them. His signature family activity was leading his posterity in a rousing rendition of "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt."
DuWayne loved and was extremely dedicated to the practice of medicine. Trained in internal medicine, his specialty was pulmonary and chest diseases. He had a 31-year private practice at the Salt Lake Clinic, held many positions at the LDS Hospital (including Chief, Pulmonary Division from 1973-1992), was a clinical professor of Medicine at the University of Utah Medical School, and was active in many state, LDS church, and national medical organizations. Although honored by many awards along the way he never lost his focus on what he felt was his sacred responsibility to help and serve each individual patient with dignity and love, no matter their background or situation in life. He truly cared for the numerous patients he saw over the years and felt greatly blessed to associate and work with so many fine and incredibly skilled people in the medical profession.
DuWayne is survived by his wife Alice, six children: Jeffrey (Victoria Wheatley) Schmidt, Heidi (Milton) Shipp, Rodney (Barbara Knudsen) Schmidt, Tracy (Luanne Ellis) Schmidt, Heather (Ronald) Brown, and Brian (Sarah Jacobsen) Schmidt, 37 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Donald.
The family wishes to express gratitude to the fine care provided by staff at the Wentworth at East Millcreek Assisted Living Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to the Intermountain Research and Medical Foundation (5121 S. Cottonwood Street, Murray, UT 84157), or the LDS Perpetual Education Fund (see pef.lds.org, click on "How Can I Help").
A viewing will be held on Sunday evening, October 6 at the East Millcreek Stake Center, 3103 East Craig Drive (3600 South) from 6-8 pm and on Monday October 7 from 10:30-11:45 am. Funeral services will be held at the same location starting at 12 noon on October 7, 2013.
Interment will take place at the Redwood Memorial Estates cemetery, 6500 South Redwood Road. in West Jordan UT.

Dear Schmidt Family,

DuWayne was such a kindhearted and generous man. He was so gracious to me, so often, and always encouraged everyone to do their best. I remember once while traveling that I had a layover at a major airport. I looked up at the man seated next to me--it was Dr. Schmidt! We had a nice visit, and as was so often the case when visiting with him, he spent the entire time asking about me. Thank you for his influence in my life. And you can't say DuWayne without saying, in the same breath, DuWayne and Alice. We love these two great souls and always will, and what a great family and a great legacy they have established, both in this life and for eternity.

Dear Alice, and each member of the family,

How can one express gratitude for a life that has touched your own so sweetly? Our love and gratitude go out to our gentle, forever kind next door neighbor, "Brother Schmidt", as we reflect on his beautiful life, and the influence he and your family had on our own.

I always felt loved in his presence. I felt watched over, as if he had soft leather gloves to care for me. So many sweet memories have come to me over the last day: hearing him talk about the boys and Lowell Bennion's ranch where they worked in the summers, showing a few of us kids his new generator in the basement pantry, seeing him tending to your beautiful back yard when I jumped on the diving board, and looked over, for a jump in the pool. Being with him and my own son's wedding reception, knowing what effort it had taken him, and Alice, to come.

May God be with each one of you in the days and years ahead as you allow memories and DuWayne's influence to continue on in blessings upon your hearts.

Love, Karey and Patrick Shane

Dear Alice and Family,

"A life well-lived" - that's what I would say about DuWayne. It's not often you can say that about someone anymore. But DuWayne certainly lived a wonderful life and worked hard to provide the same wonderful life for his family. It's an honor to have had him as the doctor of my youth as well as a great neighbor and mentor to look up to. It's also an honor to remember his good life today! His influence will last far into the future.

Dear Schmidt Family,

You will always be our favorite next-door neighbors. You loved us dearly through some deep trials.

DuWayne's dedication to medicine, I recall, made his heavy metal first aid box seemingly light when he carried it through a very long stake Young Women's hike through the Zion Narrows. He was always prepared.

I think that all of the Taylor family will shed tears hearing of DuWayne's passing. He was always gentle and so kind to each of us. Please know of our deep love and gratitude that we had the great blessing to know DuWayne, and the rest of the remarkable Schmidt family.

We will have an eternal affection for all of you and I trust we will continue our association with you in the eternities. Perhaps we will be fortunate enough in heaven to be next-door-neighbors again.

Bushels of love,
Gwen (Wendy Taylor) Soper

P.S. Mom (Shirley) is on an east coast trip with Lanny and she will be SO sorry to hear this news and be unable to be with your family at this time.

Dear Alice and family,

Sincere condolences to you. My father frequently expressed his high admiration and respect for DuWayne. May the memories of his fine character and many accomplishments provide some solace for you.

Dear Schmidt Family,

"A life well-lived" - that's what I would say about your Husband/Dad. It's a rare thing in this day and age to be able to say that about someone. But DuWayne lived a wonderful life and worked hard to provide that same wonderful life for his family. Your Husband/Dad had so much integrity and goodness in him. It's an honor to say he was my Doctor and neighbor while growing up, a mentor for living life as an adult, and an honor to remember his life today! His influence will be felt far into the future. I did not know Uncle Duwayne too well....but I do know several of his children and their families. I've always been impressed with they way the Schmidt carries itself - with love, honesty, having fun and always leading with good examples. No doubt that came from Uncle Duwayne. I love you Aunt Alice and my prayers are with you and your family.

Dear Tracy, Luann, and Schmidt family,

We are sorry to hear of Duwayne's passing. He was a wonderful man to have grown up with. I will always remember his service as our scoutmaster and particularly the canoe trip on the Jordan river. Everyone who fell in (and that was almost everyone) got a free shot! We hope you will feel the sweet comfort from above as you mourn and remember this wonderful man. We wish we could be with you.

Love,

Dear Alice and family,
JoAn and I wish to offer our condolences to you at this time. Circumstances do not allow us to attend either the viewing or the funeral service, but our thoughts have been with you ever since learning of DuWayne's passing. We attended Don's service at Redwood Memorial, but when you and DuWayne came in there was such a rush of people around the two of you that we stayed back. And then you all left directly to go out to the grave site and we had to leave. I have really enjoyed my association with both DuWayne and you and know that you will always be comforted with the knowledge that DuWayne left a legacy of a life truly well lived. May God bless you and comfort you until that joyful time of reunion that will surely come.

My condolences to the family of Duwayne. It was my pleasure to serve in the medical field with him and watch hes caring and expertise used on behalf of so many people. May the Lord's blessings bring you comfort and peace at this time of loss.

Alice and family:
We have lost one of the "great and noble ones". As a physician-partner he commanded my respect by his dedicated, compassionate service where he was at the top of his field. He was a warm personal friend and endeared himself to me. He had great love and concern for his fellowmen as exemplified by his opening and serving a mission in Mongolia. In time I will meet him in celestial spheres where we will "strike hands" and resume our friendship and association together.
Love eternally,
Waldo and Angela Perkins

Dr. Schmidt is one of the finest people I know. I worked with him at LDS Hospital. Ever the gentleman and professional and grounded in superb human relations skills he touched many lives for good. Dear Alice & Family,

Last Friday I received a call from my sister with the news that Dr. Schmidt had passed away. I initially felt very sad but then began to think of how blessed I am to have known, and become very close to such a wonderful man! I will always remember how he took me "under his wings" and became my mentor, adopted father, and friend!

Allan and I are currently serving a temple mission at the Washington, D.C. Temple. We will be with you in spirit today at the viewing, tomorrow at the services and in our thoughts and prayers for many days and nights to come. We will put your names on the prayer roll at the Washington, D.C. Temple. Love, Beth & Allan Bush

Dear Schmidt Family, What a very special and kind man Dr. Schmidt was. I had the privilege of knowing him during my years at LDS Hospital and also during my years at Salt Lake Clinic. He was always kind and considerate and eminated a great enthusiasm for life. I remember when he told me about the mission call to Mongolia...how excited he was as he considered the "things" he needed to take along on that great adventure. I am happy that my life path crossed with such a fine man. My sympathy and condolences to your entire family.

Dear C. DuWayne Schmidt and family. We were in Mongolia and saw the work of the Schmidt family. This lived the first and second great commandment to the best of their ability. We were honored to observe this family serving mankind. The outcome of their work will never be known to mankind because they did not seek recognition of man.
Eternally grateful for their work for mankind.
