Dale Ballard Obituary

Dale Henriod Ballard 1922 ~ 2005 Dale Henriod Ballard passed away at Cottonwood Hospital on June 20, 2005 at the age of 82. He was born in Magna, Utah on December 12, 1922 to Ross Day Ballard and Ruby Henriod. His family moved to Draper when he was four, where he was raised with seven brothers and two sisters in a two-room house. Dale's father taught all the family the ethic of hard work and perseverance--an ethic that became Dale's standard. Dale attended school at Draper Elementary, Jordan Jr. High and Jordan High School. In junior high and high school, he was a clarinet player and drum major. In high school he won the pentathlon record of 42 straight basketball sinks in one minute, a record that still stands. He was a very fine athlete and participated in a number of sports during high school, college, and while serving in the Army. Out of high school he entered the Army Infantry. At one time, he and four of his brothers were serving in the Armed Forces during World War II. His tour of duty lasted four years and he eventually became Platoon Sergeant in the 3rd Army Infantry in Europe and worked in General Patton's headquarters in charge of enlisted men in the emergency return section. While stationed in Florida, just prior to his overseas assignment, he met and married Alice Irene Baer on March 11, 1944. Just days after their marriage Dale was sent overseas while Alice remained in Florida, serving in the WAC. CONTINUED ON NEXT COLUMN

Dale and I were in contact many times and I respected his business ethic and friendship. He was interested in our little company, Dexide, Inc.

Mr. B.

It's been a little over a year now and I still find myself thinking of you nearly every day. When you left us I struggled with the idea that I had so much more to learn from you. As time has gone by I've realized I will never stop learning from you. Everyone has commented on the impact you've had on our lives. I hope you know you are still having an impact. A true testimony of the wonderful human being you are. The example you set for me will be with me for the rest of my life. My friend, my mentor, I miss you dearly.

Dale, Mr. B,

Your impact on my life in the business world will never be forgotten. Work hard, work smart, and have fun.

I'm sure that I am not the only member of the Deseret family that says "Thanks" and you will be missed.

Uncle Dale, Aunt Alice and their family included me when I was in 6th grade on their family vacation to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It was great! Uncle Dale purchased his 160-acre farm in Draper in 1964 from Elmer Madsen. He was so happy to have his own farm. Some of it hadn't been developed--in fact 80 acres had never been plowed. He made numerous improvements including drains, cement ditches and cultivation. It was a beautiful farm. Uncle Dale loved to eat peaches. His sweet daughter, Pamela, canned over 100 bottles of peaches for her Dad every Fall so he could have a bowl of peaches every morning for breakfast. We will miss his early morning visits to our family orchard. Uncle Dale supported all the extended family functions and he always came to the many weddings, reunions, and get-togethers. He was a great family "politician" greeting and shaking hands and giving hugs to everyone there. I will miss his "hey beautiful!"

Hey Dale,

It was an aboslute pleasure! I am still telling stories about you. Thanks for every thing you did in your life. Well done!

My first meeting with Dale was in May or June 1998 when Kimberly-Clark was interested in aquiring Ballard Medical. We met early and about 7:15 or 7:30 after a few pleasantries, Dale called over the intercom for an executive staff meeting in his office. He then pulled out a deck of cards and soon there were a number of Ballard team mates of all stripes in the office. We all began playing a version of 'Dale Ballard' poker. I think I won and had to buy lunch!

My sincere sympathy to Dale's family for your loss.

Thank you Mr. B. for the opportunity and your generosity. I began my career with Ballard Medical Products in 1988. I didn't know what stock options were then. I have learned a great deal during my career with Ballard and now K-C. Hard work, entrepreneurial spirit and generosity are the values that I carry with me today as a result of my time at Ballard Medical Products.

My wife, Debbie and I are among those whose lives you changed with your generosity. We try to live our lives in a similarly generous spirit in our own small way.

Thank you. Rest in Peace.

Mr. Dale Ballard was a great boss to work for I can remember him making it a point of his day, and his employees days, to greet his emploees as they came into work at his businesses and asking them all how they were and making them feel welcome and starting off their days with a good attitude. Nost of the bosses now at the compnaies that he sold don't do this for their employees and I want the family to know that he is sorely missed by all the employees that were at the companies that he did own before he retired. He was a great person to have around for the holdiays and to tell a joke too also. He also passed along jokes that he thought were in good taste also.

You touched more lives and provided more opportunity to us than you could have ever known. It was an honor to work for both Deseret and Ballard Medical under your guidance. Just saying thank you does not express the heartfelt gratitude so many of us feel for you.

My dear grandpa was always such a joy in our lives. Whether we went looking for pheasants at the farm, worked in the garden, told stories, or looked for very well hidden Easter eggs, we always had a good time together. Grandpa contributed so much to his family and community. He was always there with a loving, enthusiastic smile. I am grateful for the countless memories and for all that he taught me. I will always love and miss him very much.

Chief, Mr.B, were affectionate names we called him. Leader, friend, inventor, entrepenaur, was who he was to myself, my wife, and our collegues. I had the fortune to meet my future wife while working at Ballard Medical. He embraced both of us like we were family. I have much to thank him for and will miss our morning coffee meetings, fishing trips, and just being with him. I had coffe with him 4 weeks ago, and it was as it was the first time we sat down together. His integrity, and honor was what impressed the most. He will be missed by many but his memory will always be there.

Chief; (as we called Mr. Ballard) I enjoyed the 15 years I worked for you and especially the last 10 years I worked with you at the home office. Your insight into family, business and life will be my guide. I enjoyed the times we stayed late at the office to talk about the days events and the direction of the company. I wish we would have had more time together and as you said "we should have kept the company"

To the immediate family; my family sends our heartfelt sympathy to you.

To the extended family; all those who had the pleasure to work for the Chief, remember the good times as we shared a lot of good times at Ballard Medical

Sincerely,

Chris Thomas & Family

Mr. B, was one of the most remarkable human beings to grace our planet. Those of us who knew him to any degree were blessed with a smile or an anticdote that will stay with us. It was a joy to work for such a fun person and to witness the family that grew around him that maintained the sweetness of even his famous corn.

Peace and blessings to the Ballard family, Thank you for sharing him with us.

To Dale's family,

I worked for Dale from 1987 until he sold the company to Kimberly-Clark. It was the most enjoyable time of my life ... and it had mostly to do with Dale. He insisted that everyone call him by his first name, and encouraged us to call him directly in his office. I never saw him out of control or losing his temper. He was an absolute joy to work for, and I respected the man as much as my own father. He told me he would make me a millionaire ... and he did. He changed my life dramatically through his generosity in sharing company profits. It allowed me to buy a wonderful house, and get custody of my children, both of which I would not have been able to do without his largesse. He meant so much to so many of his employees, and I don't know whether all of you knew the extent of our feelings for him. He was not perfect, but he embodied the frontier qualities of our forebears with his drive, unshakeable determination, and kindness to those less fortunate. I was humbled and honored to have worked for him.
