Hi Derek. I am just revisiting this page to share my love and gratitude for our time together some 27 years ago now. Whenever I think on or travel through Williamsburg I remember riding our bikes through the area together and I have beautiful memories of that time. Much Love! miss you man.

I new Derek from West Linn, Oregon. Although it has been many years since Derek's passing, I can vividly remember Derek's enthusiasm for life and his kindness towards virtually everyone he encountered. He was truly someone whose positive attitude and can-do spirit made those around him better. My heart goes out to those who knew and loved Derek.

Hi Derek and family. I am so sorry that you were taken at such a young age from this world. The world could really use more people like you Derek. For what it´s worth, I think of you often when I am trying to be a leader or am in a group setting. You had such an amazing way with people. It´s amazing that it has been twenty years. Love you bud. Dear family of Derek:
Words cannot express the sorrow I have felt since hearing about Derek, although I know that he lives and is still larger than life. He was one of my best friends serving together in the Virginia, Richmond mission. On hard days, which were many, I remember calling him at night (he was my zone leader) and his words of encouragement and his positive attitude and sense of humor. The memory of his laugh and smile will permanantly be engrained in my mind forever. Audrey, I don't know you, but I am so sorry. You were so blessed to be married to that man, and you must be someone special for him to have chosen you for his wife. To Derek's family, my thoughts and prayers are with you also. I remember him talking about how much he loves you. Derek, I love you and look forward to seeing you again in the next life. I know you will work hard to serve the Lord there.
Love,
Heather Hatfield

Dear Lake Family,
I was saddened to hear today that Derek had completed his mission here on earth. I was blessed to get to know him while we served the Lord in Virginia. I echo the sentiments of others in this book- I don't remember ever seeing him without a smile on his face. He served and loved with all his heart, every day. I am grateful our paths crossed, and will miss him. May God bless you and your family in this difficult time.

Dear Lake Family,
I send my deepest regards and sympathy to your family at this time. I went to college with Derek and know what an outstanding person he is. I was just looking at photos of us from Ricks the other day, thinking about Derek and the good man he is. My thoughts are with you all, espeically his wife- we met only briefly once at Ricks, but I will be praying for you. I am to be married in a few days and can only imaginge how difficult it is. God bless and strengthen you all.
With sincere sympathy,

Lake Family:
As I have read the entries in this guest book, I see that there is a common link in all of them, Derek's smile. He truly loved life, and those around him could not help but love life also.
I knew him as a missionary in Virginia and considered him a great friend. When I look back on the things I learned as a missionary, Elder Lake is the source of a lot of those lessons. We are here to have joy, and Elder Lake certainly lived that way and helped others to do the same. I feel greatly blessed to have been associated with him and will always smile when I think of him.
I know this is a great loss to this world, but I know Elder Lake continues to touch many lives and and is bringing them great joy.
At this time may you feel the comforting arms of our Heavenly Father and know that Derek is still smiling and loving life.

Dear Derek Lake
Our great loss in this world is but a greater gain on the other side of the veil. I had to take the day off of work when I heard about our loss of one of the brightest stars that lit up the world. You would never know how many times your positive self blessed my life both on and off my mission. I learned from you that life is like riding a see-saw, that one can enjoy the going down just as much as they can enjoy the going up. You always had such a positive perspective of things. I don't know of a single moment when you didn't have a smile on your face. I loved you so much because you were already what I was trying so hard to become. May the Lord bless your family with comfort during this short separation. I guess now you can actually come and visit me in Tonga, you will love it there, it is full of people like you. Mortal life may have ended for you, but your memories will live throughout all eternity in the hearts of all who had the privilege to meet you, including mine. So long my dear brother. I wish I could wish you rest, but with such a willing spirit as yours, I know the Lord has much work for you to do so your chances of getting any rest are slim to none! But, happiness I gurantee will be plentiful where you are.

Dear Lake and Sorenson families,
Our Family had the privelage of getting to meet Derek while we lived in Richmond, Va. My children were incredibly moved by his story at a fireside one night as he told his story of trying to be Superman when he was little, and 'flying' off the top of the slide only to break his legs, his recovery time in the hospital, and how he spent that time learning of "true heroes" in the scriptures from his mom day after day. His testimony was strong, pure, undeniable and the spirit was strongly felt by everyone as he spoke. My kids have remembered his words over the years and his talk left such a positive, lasting impression on them. We will never forget him and were so sad to hear of his passing. Please find some comfort in knowing that Derek touched more people than you can even imagine and our entire family was better for having known him.
With much love for an outstanding missionary and all around great guy! The Jennings Family

Dear Lake and Sorenson Families,
Elder Lake taught me how to be a missionary and how to love unconditionally. Now, this Master Teacher gets the same opportunity in a new field of labor. All of you have been greatly blessed to have him in your lives, just as I was blessed to know him, if even just for a short season. God bless all of you.

I was honored to have known Elder Lake. He left a lasting impression on me. I remember watching him as a missionary, he was so humble. I remember a particular time watching him in a Sacrament meeting in the Williamsburg Ward. We were singing "God be with you till we meet again" He was crying uncontrollably. I know that he loved and cared for his family very much. I am sure he was thinking of them. I am grateful for his sincere testimony. Please accept my condolences.
