Donna Higbee Obituary

Donna Lou Robbins Higbee

1934 ~ 2021

Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, peacefully joined her eternal companion, Earl L. Higbee on January 5, 2021 surrounded by her children. She died of complications from Coronavirus pneumonia.

Donna Lou Robbins Higbee was born January 10, 1934 in Snowville, Utah to Harvey Joseph Robbins and Arvella Hansen Robbins. Her siblings included Carrie Matilda Robbins, Maxine (Leo) Conk, Jeanine (Marv) Cox, and Bill (Loretta) Robbins. She is survived by her sister Jeanine Cox and her brother Bill Robbins.

As a very young child, Donna lived in Snowville, Ogden, and Helper, Utah, but spent the greater part of her childhood and adolescence in Springville, Utah. Donna and her sisters, Maxine and Jeanine, would perform together under the tutelage of their wonderful mother. They would sing and dance at programs and won many amateur talent contests. They also often sang on the radio. She was a very active little "Red-Devil" and spirited cheerleader at Springville High School.

Donna met the love of her life, Earl Higbee, soaping his car windows on Halloween night. They were sealed in the Manti temple on September 6, 1950. Earl was immediately deployed by the U.S. Navy and they moved to Alameda, California where Earl was shipped out and Donna lived in military housing. They later moved to Utah and lived in Salt Lake City, Airbase Village, Milcreek, and then to Sandy, Utah on Poppy Lane where they raised their family.

Donna brought into this world, taught, and blessed the lives of four children: Dennis (Diane) Higbee, Terry (Ken) Atwan, Elise Higbee (deceased) and Denise (David) Vance. Through the Lamanite Student Placement program sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Donna also fostered two beautiful Lamanite daughters, Elizabeth Chino and Sandra Murphy. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, and 37 great-grandchildren.

Donna was taught to have a great work ethic and officially began earning her way at the early age of 12; working for her parents at Park Ro-She in Springville, Utah. Donna started her own dance studio in her basement on Poppy Lane and blessed many young women's lives teaching them her love of dance. When her son Dennis was called on his mission to Germany, she began working at the sugar beet factory in West Jordan, Utah alongside one of her dear friends, Verda Mae Sorenson. Verda's husband Bob was her boss. She later worked at Union Jr. High in the Cafeteria and then as office staff.

Donna was blessed with a very keen intellect, organizational skills, a mind for business and flawless honesty, dependability, and integrity. Florence Hansen of Hansen Classics recognized these attributes in her neighbor friend and hired her to manage her manufacturing/processing plant and business. The company flourished under Donna's leadership and shipped the precious porcelain pieces world-wide.

Donna developed a strong testimony of the Atonement of Jesus Christ and His gospel at a very young age. She was passionate in her testimony and was never afraid to teach and or defend it. She lived her strong testimony of tithing and paid a full tithe her entire life. She loved to serve and held many callings in all of the organizations of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints including Stake Primary President of the Sandy Utah East Stake. She and her husband served in the Jordan River and Ogden Temples. They also served in the Philippine Cebu Mission and at the Utah State Prison.

Donna loved music and played the piano and organ. Her children loved to have her play a boogie-woogie on the piano as they danced and slid on the real wood floors of their home. She also loved to sing and had a strong, clear, pitch-perfect alto voice. She was always active in ward choirs and sang with a special group of temple worker sisters called the JOY singers. She was an accomplished artist, painter, and even learned to sculpt. She loved to sew and taught the girls in the neighborhood through the 4-H program. It was common for her students to win blue ribbons at the county and state fairs. She also extended her 4-H involvement to teach cooking skills. She was active in the Edgemont Elementary School PTA and was always supporting her children in their school activities.

Donna loved being creative and crafty and could embroider, crochet, knit, quilt, and do anything she put her mind to do. She would rescue abandoned pieces of furniture and refurbish them better than new. She was an accomplished reader especially when it came to religious works. She was a gifted writer and poet. She loved attending plays, musicals and performances and was often asked to write, direct, and choreograph the ward road show. She was blessed with so many gifts and was always sharing those gifts with those around her.

She was an excellent cook and it was common for her to take meals and treats to her neighbors and friends. Many of her recipes and tips are found in nationally published cookbooks. Anyone who came to call at her home was always offered a meal. Her home was a sanctuary to her family, especially her grandchildren.

Of all her skills, gifts, and accomplishments her most favorite thing of all was her family and having them around her. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren loved coming to her home and spending the night popping popcorn, watching classical movies and musicals, playing games, and making honey candy and vinegar taffy.

Donna was a devoted wife and mother. She was tenacious about teaching her children about everything and always taught them to do things well. Her children learned to love to work hard and to this day they love working hard. If there was a garden that needed to be weeded or windows that needed to be cleaned, she worked along-side her children until they were proficient in doing it by themselves.

Her love and devotion to her beloved Earl were unmatched. Earl's cancer doctor often expressed admiration for the quality of care that Donna gave to Earl and credited Donna with extending his life by years. You would catch them holding hands while watching TV, or while kneeling at their bedside each night for prayer. They adored each other. As their children, we feel that we were truly blessed and are delighted that they are together again.

Grandma was awesome. I got to be her first grandson. I got her youth and energy. I went camping, fishing, four wheel driving, took baths in a tub in their trailer when I was small. Enjoyed her peanut butter cookies, and got to watch her raise Denise while she was still in High School. I loved going over there to Sandy in Poppy Lane. Grandpa was great, grandma was incredible. She was cutting edge, an early adopter and always had the latest gizmos and gadgets and art methods. She was a gifted story teller too. I loved hearing stories of Grandpa Robbins teacher her how to drive by keeping a glass full of water from spilling in the car. I could go on for a year about how incredible she was.

Terry, Dennis, and Denise,
Your Mom was an amazing woman. So full of life; always ready with something fun to do or make. I have many memories of her camping. I also appreciated the concern and love your parents showed for my parents and my family.
Thank you all for sharing your love for her with the words you spoke at her service.
We are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. Beverly and Glenn Burgener

I'll take a small liberty in calling Donna my aunt, although we are actually only related by my sister's marriage to Dennis. That said, my association and connection with Aunt Donna, always felt as close as blood. When Dennis and Diane married, I gained Earl and Donna as Uncle and Aunt. They always took personal interest in me and over the years, whenever I had an opportunity to participate in family events, they greeted me with hugs and kind words. Every time we met, they both asked - with genuine love and sincere curiosity - about my life, my children, and our experiences.

When I was a teenager, I worked at Hansen Classics for a time, along with my mother, Darlene Green. Aunt Donna was the manager of the store and the production shop at that time. She welcomed me as a young employee; I started out just cleaning the facility, but as time passed, I also participated in the artisanship of the porcelain figurine process. One day, Aunt Donna asked me how I used my teenage earnings from my new employment. She suggested that instead of just buying clothes and other fancy frills that don't last, I might consider buying a piece of furniture or something I could use in my adult future. Because of her suggestion, I thought long and hard, then settled on the idea of buying a piece of furniture - an oak curio, which could showcase some of the beautiful Hansen Classic pieces along with other treasured art I might add in later years.

I brought that piece of furniture, proudly, into my young marriage and it moved with me across the country and back again, gracing each humble home with beauty. Although I had to keep the beloved curio in storage for a number of years while we lived and traveled overseas, I never could “fall out of love” with it, especially because of the lessons and memories it held. While Aunt Donna’s words may seem like such a simple suggestion, it made a lasting impression on me. I learned to save and spend differently because of her counsel. Now, nearly 40 years later, that same oak curio graces the entry hall of my dream home, still showcasing beautiful and treasured pieces of art from around the world. It speaks quietly to my heart of a special woman’s care and love.

Great Aunt Donna was such a fun and loving individual! I remember her leading us in Christmas songs at extended Christmas parties, and always taking time to visit with me at family get togethers. I remember her being full of enthusiasm and being the life of the party! When my dad passed away, she gave my mom, sister, and I special handkerchiefs prior to the funeral. This kind gesture meant more than I could ever say, and I know my mom, sister, and I each cherish our handkerchiefs to this day. She lived a beautiful life, and the service held in her honor was such an incredible tribute to her. I'm so grateful she is reunited with her loved ones on the other side, and prayer for the many loved ones here, to feel peace, comfort, and joy knowing their dear mom, grandma, sister, aunt, neighbor, and friend was one of our Heavenly Father's truest disciples who faithfully endured to the end. Sending much love, from me and the rest of the Brent Parker family

Donna was an amazing example to me. She was the first "older" person I knew who embraced technology, bringing her I-pad to meetings so she would not miss a thing. I got one because she did. She told me 2-3 times a year, as long as I knew her, that I should write all my spiritual experiences down in a book, and continually asked me if I had. Donna, I finished my book 2 months ago. Thanks for bugging me about it. As I visited her home to minister to her, she never once complained about health or other issues. She was always "wonderful" and blessed. I love you Donna!

Higbee Family,
I've known Earl and Donna as a young child. Donna has always been a kind and positive person. She was always a generous hostess with a bright smile. I remember going to their house for family Christmas parties with my parents Bill and Leah Higbee. It was at these parties I felt the bond of family and got to know my cousins. We played hide and seek, kick the can and any number of games. I was able to get to know Uncle Earl and Aunt Donna and saw through their example how they treated people. They were always both so kind and the exuded Christlike qualities when you met them. I miss those events as I will miss Donna, Earl, and my parents. I can't help feel that a generation of strong examples has graduated from this earth and is now happy and working together in the after life. She will be greatly missed but I feel she is so happy to be reunited with uncle Earl and the rest of her family that has passed beyond this veil.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of the greater Higbee and Robbins family as you mourn the loss of Donna and celebrate the legacy that she leaves behind.

We will miss our dear Donna. She was such a joy to be around with her sweet smile and her always positive attitude. We loved to hear her testimony and comments in our classes at church. We will miss her sense of humor and how she made us laugh. We will miss being able to visit with her and the messages she would send after we gave a lesson or a talk in church. We send our love and condolences to all of her family and loved ones.

My deepest condolences for your loss. Donna will always have a special place in my heart. I am so grateful that I have had the privilege of calling her my friend. I so loved my visits with her when I would take my accordion and play a few songs for her. She always brightened my day with her smile. One of my cherished keepsakes is a handwritten letter she mailed to me in November of 2012 after Earl's passing. In it she thanked me for the many years that as Earl's hometeaching companion, I always made myself available to go and do our home taching, often with only a moment's notice, as some of our families had very difficult schedules to work around. Donna always expressed her gratitude and love to all who knew her. She was indeed truly an Angel that God shared with us for a season. Now she is again in her eternal home together again with her beloved husband and other relatives on that side of the viel. Every time I think of her, I can hear the words of our Savior welcoming her home with the words, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant".

We are sorry to hear of Aunt Donna's passing. We have so many fond memories of Higbee family get togethers and her feisty personality and contagious laugh. She was a hoot and always willing to jump into the fun with the kids and share her laugh with everyone. Donna led us in songs around the fire so many times and always had a story to share. We've missed those family outings so much.
With Covid restrictions we will be joining via Zoom and appreciate the opportunity to do so. Our hope is that each of you know how much your family in in our hearts. Our prayers are for peace and comfort for each of you.

I have many fond memories of both Donna and Earl. Donna was kind, caring and (in a good way) feisty. She had an exuberant attitude toward life that was contagious. Although I saw her on only two occasions after moving from Sandy, it was as if we'd been friends and neighbors all along. I offer my condolences to her family, but trust the reunion with Earl was a joyful one.

What a wonderful life fulfilled mother your family has. Even though I didn't know her personally, I know her through her Dennis and family. Seeing all she has accomplished in her life she is ready for the next adventure. Seeing her at Stake conferences with your dad and the love and devotion you all shared with them was beautiful to see. Dennis and Diane I love you both and see who you get your strength from and your working so hard at whatever you do. Prayers to you and your family knowing she was truly and ANGEL on this earth. Love to you both Colleen Van Wagoner.

Donna sent beautiful cards and called me numerous times after my husband, John passed away. I now know why John loved her so much. Such a sweet, caring, talented (with a bit of naughtiness) women whose incredible hugs got me through some tough days. Beautifully written obituary. My sincere sympathies to the Higbee family. Dear Higbee family,
What a joy it was for me to enjoy the time with your mom as she visit taught my mom. I loved her visits as much as mom did and after dad passed away having Bishop and Diane across the street and having your angel mom checking in on her, knowing that there was always someone watching over her who loved her, was a blessing I will forever be grateful for. We were truly blessed by that neighborhood.
My heart breaks that she is gone but rejoices knowing that your sweet parents are back together where she has wanted to be, knowing that through the beautiful Gospel Plan, we can be together forever.
Please know that the Kohnlein and Cannon family loves you all and we are so grateful for your friendship and love.
Love,
Bernd and Shirlene Cannon Kohnlein
