Edward Pratt Obituary

Edward Glen Pratt

1951 ~ 2023

Edward Glen Pratt, 72, passed away on Oct. 23, 2023, from heart failure, a condition he had been living with for fourteen years.

Ed was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on Oct. 6, 1951, to Glen Arthur and Lois Evans Pratt. He was the third of five children, and the first born son. Some of his childhood was spent in Portland, Oregon and San Jose, California before the family returned to Utah when Ed was in junior high school. He graduated from Olympus High School in 1970.

The son of two accomplished musicians, Ed loved and understood music. He began playing guitar as a young man and performed for many years as a guitarist/vocalist for live performances and on studio recordings. His musical training and his keen ear also made him an excellent sound engineer, first in the recording studio, and later in a sound reinforcement company that he founded and successfully operated for nearly 50 years. He was well known around concert venues in the Intermountain west and was widely admired by the promoters, managers and artists who worked with him.

Ed originally met his wife, Julie Roberts when she became one of his guitar students in September of 1974. They became reacquainted in July 1993 and were married on October 8, 1994. Julie was Ed's wife, best friend, and caregiver. They created a wonderful life for 29 years before Ed's passing. Ed loved her dearly and always introduced her as "my lovely wife, Julie."

When he was in his 40s, Ed became reacquainted with his adult sons, who had been adopted as young children by their stepfather. Ed always knew they would find him.

By January of 2022, Ed's heart failure had progressed to the point where he needed a heart transplant but was not a suitable candidate due to his age. Instead, he underwent a 13-hour open heart surgery to implant a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) to help circulate blood through his body. Ed was literally running on batteries.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Julianne (William) Shanks and Ruth Ann (Day) Clark. He is survived by his spouse Julie Pratt, sister Charmaine (David) Folland, brother, James E. (Debbie) Pratt, brother-in-law Steven (Rosalie) Roberts, sons Ryan (Emily) Miller and James Silver (Sabina Ulleryd), five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

The family expresses its gratitude to physicians, A. (Boudi) G. Kfoury, MD; Ramy Alharethi, MD; Ross Butschek, MD; Donya Mouebali, MD; the nurse practitioners and medical staff of Intermountain Medical Center Heart Failure Clinic for the excellent care given to Ed over the past 14 years; the nurses at the LVAD team who cared for Ed during the last 21 months of his life; William T. Caine, MD, who performed Ed's quintuple bypass and the implantation of his LVAD; and all the health care professionals at IHC who cared for him during the last month of his life.

According to Ed's wishes, his remains were cremated and there will be no funeral service. A celebration of Ed's life will be scheduled for friends and family sometime in the Spring.

Had a huge crush on Ed who I first saw sing "Just Like a Woman" at an Olympus assembly. He was a year ahead of me. ~Diana Wright Green

It is with tremendous sorrow that learn of the passing of Ed Pratt. In my early life Ed was my brother in law. He was kind, multi talented, very intelligent, and always fun to be around. He survived a helicopter crash many years ago that took several lives. He used the additional time he was given to bring friendship and love to those he knew. I didn't get to spend as much time with him as I would have wished but I will miss him. Until we meet again.

I just found out that Ed had passed away. He has been such a great friend for so many years. For many years, we have worked together on the JazzSLC Programs and the Thanksgiving Day Dinners at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. He was always willing to donate sound equipment to so many causes. I just called JD Price, who works for Ed, to arrange things for Thanksgiving when JD told me the sad news. Julie, I think the world of you and pray for God´s strength and blessings to be with you in these challenging times. We will all miss Ed´s smile and willingness to help others.

May your memories give you peace and comfort of your loved one. Words fall short of expressing my sorrow for the loss of your loved one. May GOD be with you all during this difficult time. 1 Thessalonians 4:14 For if we have faith that Jesus died and rose again, so too God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in death through Jesus.

Although I only met Ed a couple of times, I was well acquainted with his sisters Charmaine, Julie and Ruth. They loved their brother. I have spent a lot of time doing family history work on the Pratt family and also have a great love for Ed's dad (I didn't have the opportunity of being acquainted with his mother). We pray for your peace and comfort at this difficult time.

Nobody better married his voice to his guitar than Ed. It was joy to hear him perform. He was an inspiration to all his fellow troubadours-by his pacing, phrasing and most of all by his gentle and perfect touch on the guitar, reminding us that it was meant to accompaniment, not competition, to the voice. And none was as rich and clear as his own.

I first encountered Ed when he performed at an Olympus High assembly. Many years later I had enjoyed the privelege of working with him as both a performer and engineer at various venues here in Salt Lake. Always kind, honest and professional, I considered him a friend and I'll miss him. Some years ago I came across a local poster from the late 60's advertising a local folk festival featuring many of the areas best artists. Ed was at the top of the list.

I remember Ed fondly, he´s the only one who could grow a real beard in high school. And I remember playing music with him, he was an amazing musician.

So sorry to hear of Ed's passing. I knew Ed in the 70's and 80's as an entertainer and later a friend. He was a gifted musician, great conversationalist and a wonderful guy. Condolences to family and friends. He will be missed
