Elmer Collings Obituary

Monroe, UT
J Elmer Collings, 88, passed away February 4, 2018 from causes incident to age, surrounded by his family in Sandy, Utah. He was born August 6, 1929 in Monroe to Earl B and Tillie Borg Collings. Sealed in the Manti Temple to the love of his life, Betty Jean Campbell. He is survived by his "bride" Betty; his son, David (Nesya) Collings, Oceanside, CA; daughter, Madeleine (Mark) Scoville, Sandy; 7 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter; brother, Melvin (Terry) Collings.
Elmer was a sheep herder, pilot, avid outdoorsman, master gardener, sailor, officer and gentleman. His was a life of service. Devoted to helping others and the communities in which he lived. He served active duty in the United States Army for 26 years. Drafted in 1953 as a private, retiring as Lt Colonel. Serving in Vietnam, Turkey, Germany, Panama, and many places throughout the United States. Military awards include: Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster as well as many other military awards.
Elmer was a dedicated Scouter for over 50 years, serving as Scoutmaster on three continents, and receiving the Eagle Scout Award, Vigil Honor, and Silver Beaver, among others. His public service in the civilian sector found him engaged in working with Monroe City, Sevier County as commissioner, and on the State Board of Mental Health. Elmer served in many capacities in the LDS Church including: missionary, bishop, stake presidency, temple ordinance worker, and patriarch.
Elmer touched the lives of all he met throughout the world. Unselfishly giving of his time to anyone in need. Ready to give a word of advice and praise, lend a listening ear, or a helping hand. He made everyone feel important. He left you feeling a little better about yourself and inspired to do more. The world is a better place because he was in it.
Funeral services will be held Saturday February 17, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Central Valley LDS Ward Chapel, 110 S Main St, Central Valley, Utah . Viewings: Friday evening at the Magleby Mortuary in Richfield, from 6-8 and Saturday morning at the ward chapel in Central Valley from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Burial: Monroe City Cemetery with military honors by the Monroe American Legion Post #37 and the Utah Army Honor Guard.
