Elwood Bywater Obituary

Elwood George Bywater 1913 ~ 2007 BOUNTIFUL - Elwood George Bywater departed this life February 5, 2007 after 93 years of happiness and service intermingled with sadness and afflictions. Born August 25, 1913 in Salt Lake City, Utah to George E. and Sarah Emma Holdway Bywater. He married Donna Johnson April 29, 1940 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were the parents of two sons and three daughters Douglas (Virginia), Gordon (Peggy), Linda Libby (Mike), Virginia Finklea (Robert), Julia Mower (Ralph). One of Elwood's greatest joys was the service rendered by his children and their spouses in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the commendable manner in which they reared their children. Elwood gave most of the credit for the fine lives of his children to their mother, Donna. Elwood was totally dedicated to the service he rendered in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served for seven years as Bishop of Wasatch Second Ward, Hillside Stake, seven years on the high council; he spent many years working on the Hillside Stake Farm, Elder's Quorum president, High Priest Group Leader and teacher. He served faithfully in all of his church callings. Elwood graduated from the University of Utah in business management. He was President of Purchasing Agent Association of Utah from 1954 to 1955. He was employed by the Department of Interior, Bureau of Reclamation in Salt Lake City and Provo for 43 years. When he retired in May of 1978 he was the Assistant to the Regional Director. Following the death of Donna, he married Haru Bromley in the Salt Lake Temple. She was a wonderful companion to Elwood and they enjoyed several years of harmony and services to their families and friends. With Haru he served a mission in the St. George Visitors Center. After the death of Haru, he married Mary Irene Shankula July 15, 1990 in the Jordan River Temple. They brought immense happiness to each other and Elwood often expressed his great gratitude for the way Irene accepted and served his children and grandchildren. Elwood leaves his beloved wife, Mary Irene, five children, 29 grandchildren and 65 great-grand children. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 9, 2007 at the North Canyon 3rd Ward, 2505 S. David Blvd., Bountiful. Friends may call Thursday, Feb. 8th from 6-8 p.m. at Lindquist's Bountiful Mortuary, 727 N. 400 E. and Friday 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the Church prior to services. Interment: Salt Lake City Cemetery. Dear Family
Elwood was to me his home teacher, a perfect example of service. He memorized scripture and delivered them in his last calling as Sunday School Class President. We stand all amazed Elwood, may we emulate what you so humbly taught us.

Dear Aunt Irene and family,
All my memories of Uncle Elwood are filled with love and gentleness. He was such an example to my father as he found his way back to the church. How greatly I appreciated the many visits you, Irene, and Uncle Elwood made to my parents as their health failed and they couldn't get out to see the family. Thank you and know my thoughts and prayers are with you. I can't help thinking of the glorious reunion taking place in heaven with the Bywater family reunited now. All my Love,
Debra Palur Johnson

I express my condolences to Elwood's family. I cherish my boyhood memories with Elwood when he was married to my grandmother, Haru. While serving their mission in my home town of St. George, I came to know and love Elwood for the wonderful, energetic, and righteous man that he is. It's my prayer that his family and loved ones will be as blessed by his life and memories as I and my family have been.

I am very sorry to learn of Elwood's passing. He was a good man, and a wonderful companion to my mother, Haru Bromley Bywater. I know that he loved my mother, and she loved him. They spent eleven or twelve caring years together. I pray that all family members find comfort, at this time, from the gospel's plan of salvation. Love, Charles S. Bromley

We were sorry to hear of your loss, our thoughts and prayers are of you at this time. Elwood had a long and wonderful life. We are grateful for the wonderful example he was to everyone and for raising a wonderful family. Our family has been very fortunate to know his son, Doug and his family. I'm sure all the great qualities that Doug has are because of Elwood's example. Our best to you and your family.

Bishop Bywater was my first bishop as a little girl in the Wasatch 2nd Ward primary. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. May God bless you in your time of need.

Dear Loved Ones and Kensington Neighbors.

I can still picture Elwood and Stuart early Saturday AM, shovels in hand, headed to the Welfare Farm, or the government group riding in their daily car pool, and Donna and Clara singing and laughing.

What a beautiful flood of happy memories come to me as I think of Bishop Bywater and Kensington Avenue. The events of my youth and the friendship with all of you and especially the times with my dear friend Doug, are an indelible part of my life.

Our best wishes at this tender time, and may you know of the love we have for you and your wonderful family.
