FERN WONG Obituary

Fern Fay Wong 1959 ~ 2010 Fern Fay Wong was born on January 4th, 1959 in Evanston, Wyoming to Wing Gog Wong and Back Ling Mah (Wong). She passed away on July 9, 2010 in South Jordan, Utah. Fern was raised in Evanston and worked in her parents' restaurant, New Paris Café, with her six siblings, Mae, Fay, Mary, Mavon, Margaret and Raymond and her adopted brother, Sammy. After graduating from Evanston High School in 1977, she spent a year in Taiwan where she learned to speak Mandarin fluently. In 1978, she moved to Salt Lake City, Utah and later married Roger Carter. She had three children with him before divorcing. Fern raised her children while working two full-time jobs as a records administrator for the Salt Lake County Fire Department and waitress. While working, she earned her bachelor's degree in Psychology, became a certified EMT and received her Realtor's license. After 17 years, she left her position at the fire department to pursue a career in nursing, and received academic honors in her accelerated nursing bachelor's degree program. In the later years of her life, while working full-time as a neonatal nurse at the University of Utah hospital, she also worked as a flight attendant for SkyWest. She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Canada, and visited all of the Hawaiian Islands. In 2007, she was diagnosed with uterine and ovarian cancer, and after a valiant fight, succumbed to the cancer in 2010. Fern is survived by her children, Jeremy (Kristin) Carter, Richard (Sarah) Carter and Elizabeth (Steven) Morton, and her two grandchildren, Alecsya Morton and Evelyn Morton. She is preceded in death by her mother, Back Ling Mah (Wong). A viewing will be held 9:30 a.m. Fri., July 16, 2010 at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 E. 10600 S., Sandy, UT. Funeral services will start at 10:30 a.m., followed by cremation.

As coworkers of Fern we wanted to express our deepest sympathy to her family. We enjoyed Fern's gentle spirit. She was always so willing to help others. She never complained or let on how poorly she must have felt, even right up to the end of ther time here with us. Her tiny patients will miss her, and we will miss her also.

What a remarkable woman Fern turned out to be. I went to School in Evanston and Graduated with Fern. Her close friends should be honored to have shared time with her. And her Family should feel blessed, and cherish her memory in their hearts forever.
You are not so far away my friend. Perhaps you are the leader for the rest of us to follow and what an inspiration you have been to us. Thank you for being you, and God bless you and your family!

I was saddened to hear of Fern's passing. I was a waitress with her at Seven Seas for many years and then met up with her again at the Remote Encoding Center for the Post Office doing data entry. Please accept my deepest condolences and love at this time. She was a smart and intelligent woman, friend to all and full of life. She is in a much better place now, even though her loved ones are left behind.
