Jack Nichols Eichers
1921-2025
- Millcreek, Utah – Jack N. Eichers, passed away peacefully, at the age of 104, on the morning of October 2, 2025, at his home. He was surrounded by family and friends to say their goodbyes and cheer for his reunion with his dear Ruthie. He was very proud to have lived such a long and fruitful life. He lived independently, almost to the very end. We all cheered him on, knowing that his reunion with Ruth would be a joyous celebration planned out meticulously by Ruth.
He was recently honored by Governor Cox, as a member of the Centenarian Club for the State of Utah. That is an exclusive club, few are eligible to join. If you can just imagine what Jack has seen & experienced over his lifetime.
He was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather to his family. Jack was highly respected, loved by all. He loved his neighbors, who watched over and cared for him till the end. Jack worried more about others, even in his old age, than he worried about himself. TMB (too many birthdays) and lack of replacement parts is said to be the cause of death.
Jack was born on August 9, 1921 to John and Maud Mabel Sly Eichers. He was the 2nd youngest of 3 boys and 2 girls. He was born in Clearfield, Utah, where his grandmother Sly lived, who was a nurse midwife and helped bring him into the world. He loved riding his dad's train (Bamberger Railroad) from Salt Lake up to Clearfield to see his grandmother and grandfather.
Jack grew up off 12th East & South Temple, attending: Wasatch Elementary, Bryant Jr High and West High School. Jack was very proud to be a West High alum and was a member of the West High Alumni Club until his death. He often told stories about Wasatch Elementary school, before they put the tunnel in under South Temple.
He married his next-door neighbor. Johanna Ruth Markt Eichers on March 3, 1945 on his way through Salt Lake City on leave, before he was shipped out to the Philippines with the Army-Air Corp (today's Air Force). There he served in the HQ Squadron of the Pacific Air Command, until the conclusion of WWII. He was extremely proud of his military service and was proud to be an American. Jack and Ruth enjoyed 70 years together, where they were very involved in their early years in neighborhood, civic and church activities. Ruthie was his guiding light through their years together and they did everything together. Behind a strong woman, stands a strong man and that was Ruth & Jack.
After graduating from high school, Jack attended Stevens-Henager Business College, where he received his business degree. This schooling was instrumental in his being referred to Mr. Stevens, the owner of Steven Sales Company, a commercial electric manufacturer's representative for a number of national brands. He worked there 45 years before his retirement.
Jack and Ruth had two sons, Preston Eichers and Bradley Eichers, who they raised in East Millcreek, Utah. Bradley married Brenda Goodman, and they have 3 wonderful children: Stephanie (Sam) Hale, Annie Eichers and Garrett (Lexi) Eichers, all of Salt Lake City, Utah. Preston finally caught the vision of marriage and married Shirley Hermansen Eichers, and they have 4 wonderful children: Jennifer (Anthony) Alleman, Eric (Lauren) Murray – Scotsdale, Arizona, Caitlin Eichers and Colbie Eichers. Jack was so very proud of his 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He cherished and loved to see them, play with them and watch them grow up.
Jack was a hard worker and always needed to be anxiously engaged. Two years after his first retirement, he went to work for Capital Industries, where he worked 35 years before retiring at age 102. He loved working for Sam Gustafson and Harden Breinholt and family.
Jack was a stalwart and active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was the last remaining member of the original Garden Heights Ward. He was so thankful, to Bishop Fowles, his then bishop who gave him an opportunity to serve, which ignited his love and testimony of the gospel. He served in many positions, including Counselor in the Wilford Stake Presidency, High Council Canyon Rim Stake, Bishopric Counselor and Assistant scoutmaster in his ward. When Garden Heights ward was moved into the Wilford Stake in 1971, he was chosen by Elder Gordon B. Hickley to be the 2nd Counselor in the new Wilford Stake Presidency. He served there for 14 years, before earning his release.
Anyone who knew Jack knows that he was an avid fan and supporter of the University of Utah and athletics. He was a member of the Bleacher Utes, which became today's Crimson Club and held season tickets for basketball, football and gymnastics. The Utah gymnastics team was his favorite team to watch and cheer for.
Jack was an active member in his neighborhood, becoming close friends with all his neighbors, to include all the small children. With his large driveway, he loved to have the kids over to play basketball or chalk up his driveway. Words cannot express our appreciation for the devoted neighbors who took an active part in attending to Jack and his needs. Thank you. Thank you to Emily Hullinger, his home nurse through the end.
Jack is proceeded in death, by many, but specifically, his mother and father, his sister Lorraine Spitko, brothers Jasper (Connie) Eichers and Art (Betty) Eichers and his youngest sister Marie Otteson.
