James Cawley Obituary

SSgt. James WilfordCawley Soldier and Hero  LAYTON - James (Jim) Cawley, 41, our beloved fallen soldier and hero died Saturday, March 29, 2003 in Iraq while defending and protecting our freedom.  James was born on August 28, 1961 at Vandenberg AFB, California. He was the fourth child of seven born to Cecil M. (Rocky) Cawley and Mary Harling Cawley. He also lived in England and Texas prior to moving to Roy, Utah where James graduated from Roy High School in 1979 and attended Weber State University. He served an LDS mission in Fukuoka, Japan from 1981-83. He had a firm testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. James fell in love with the Japanese people and culture. He joined the United States Marines Corps and was stationed in Adak, Alaska and Camp Pendleton, California and traveled the world before being stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He met and married his beautiful wife Miyuki Miyagi Cawley there. She was the love of his life and he was so pleased to bring her home to his family. He was the very proud father of Cecil and Keiko, the children he adored. First and foremost, James was a family man. James left active duty with the Marines so he could pursue a new career in law enforcement. He was highly recruited by many municipal police departments but chose Salt Lake City PD. He attended their Salt Lake Police Academy in 1997 and graduated with top honors, receiving the Top Gun Award and the Blue Shirt Award as the overall top recruit. He worked for the Police Department in Salt Lake City on S.W.A.T. and City Gangs. He was passionate about his work on the force and loved the men and women he worked with.  James was called back to active duty with the Marines in January 2002 and sent to Iraq as part of  Operation Iraqi Freedom. James is survived by his wife Miyuki Cawley, his son Cecil T. Cawley, age eight, and his daughter Keiko Cawley, age six, all of Layton. He is also survived by his father Cecil M. Cawley, Roy and his parents-in-law Takemitsu and Aiko Miyagi of Okinawa, Japan, his brother and sisters: Debbie (Richard) Seamons of Allyn, Washington; Julie (Randy) Hanson of Roy, Utah; Michael (Sandy) Cawley of Roy, Utah; Susan (Michael) Norton of Mesquite, Texas; Lori (Roth) Antonich of Pleasant View, Utah; and Kimberly (Corey) Coons of Roy, Utah and brother-in-law Hiroto (Yoko) of Tokyo, Japan. Also survived by 21 nieces and nephews and three great-nieces and nephews and beloved aunts and uncles in the United States and Great Britain. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Harling Cawley, who loved him dearly. Funeral services with full military and police honors will be held at noon Thursday, April 10 at the Bountiful Regional Center. There will be no public viewing or reception but those wishing to attend should arrive early. Interment will be in the Roy City Cemetery. We are deeply saddened by his death and will miss his influence in our lives. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Marine Corps and the Salt Lake Police Department for their attention and sensitivity at this very difficult time. Thank you to the media for their tributes to James and to all those who have sent food, cards, flowers, sympathies and prayers for our family. We are absolutely overwhelmed by the outpouring that has been shown. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been set up for the Cawley children and donations are being taken at any America First Credit Union.  Funeral services under the direction of Myers Mortuary, Roy, UT. Hello,

We wanted you to know that we will be honoring and remembering your loved one this holiday season. We have recently sent Care Packages to our deployed troops in his name. Each package will carry the name, photo, service branch, rank and hometown of James W. Cawley US Marine Staff Sergeant.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, our family, friends and many others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

My daughter Lindy told me she needed to write about a veteran for school and that she wanted to write about her great uncle James. So I pulled up some pictures and told her some stories. I told her that if he were here, he would call her "pumpkin" and say she looked just like me when I was little. He might even call her baby baby Cheem, because he always called me Baby Cheem after my aunt who he called Cheem. She thought that was hillarious. Then we printed out a picture of you and a bio that someone had written online. We miss you and look forward to seeing you again some day!

James, I visited the Field of Heroes today in Pocatello, ID. There are now over 7000 crosses. I decorated your cross and it still hurts, really hurts. You were so special and the things you accomplished were amazing. Brady, Roth and I miss you and talk of you often. God bless and keep you until we meet again. Love you.

Jim, I was thinking about you remembering all the times we rode together, talking about our kids all night long and remembering all the ops we worked together. I was always so at ease when I worked with you, knowing you had my back. You are a true hero and a man of God. I miss you and wish I would have spent more time with you the last time I saw you. We are so proud of this young man and his loving family. We have permission now to paint a second portrait of each hero – so that one can be requested and received by the Spouse and one can be painted and sent to each hero’s mother. Please let us know if we can paint a second portrait of Staff Sgt James W. Cawley – it would be a privilege and an honor. Hope to hear from you – very sincerely, Project Compassion.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised Le Ron A. Wilson (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

“Paid in Full”
To Honor The Service of Fallen and Injured Marines

Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full

We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward

What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our hearts we will cherish your lives

Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the Few, the Proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us

They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown

Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full

Mike Cawley

August 16, 2005

On behalf of the Cawley family, I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to post a kind thought or a memory here. My family and I do go to sites dedicated to fallen soldiers and we do take the time to read and re-read all the expressions others have offered. They are a great source of comfort and pride to us. It is especially comforting to hear from those of you who knew Jim to take the time to post your thoughts and remembrances of him. Most of you know as well as we do that Jim was every bit the man he is described as. To hear others express it means the world.

Just to provide any of you some comfort who still grieve for Jim and his wife and kids, I wanted to tell you that yes, his death has left a terrible hole. It is as painful to me today as it was the first time I heard the news. Maybe even more so. But not all of it is the kind of horrible hole that some would imagine. His wife has become much stronger...doing things she never would have done before. She is every bit as much a hero as Jim was. She rarely asks for help. She won't allow people to do for her what she can do for herself. His children are also doing well. They carry around a lot of pride for their father. They work hard and help their mother. And when I'm with them, we never avoid the subject of Jim. We talk of him and laugh over good memories and the fine sense of humor Jim had. I never miss an opportunity to tell them something about their father. Places we went, things we did, funny stories and also we talk about Jim's many accomplishments. To them, he isn't really gone. When I play and tease with them, they even tease me back and tell me their Dad will come back just to haunt me. And I am a better person now out of what has happened. I have great pride in my family name and the honor that Jim brought to thaat name. I have the great honor of being the brother of the finest human being I have ever known and in sharing that pride with others. I no longer take for granted all the beautiful things and all the beautiful people in my life. I get the privilege and the opportunity to fill in for Jim with his kids and trying to be the best uncle I can. I can't begin to describe how rewarding that is. To me, Cecil and Keiko are as precious as my own kids now. Thank you all again.

Sincerely,

Mike Cawley (Jim's Brother)

To Jim's Family: My son Clint served with Jim in the 2Bat., 1st Marines S.T.A. Platoon while serving in the 1980's He remembers Jim as a kind hearted but tough Marine, who was fantastic, intelligent and thought more about those around him than himself. They did 2 floats together. On behalf of our whole family, we extend our sincere condolences to your family, and thank you for your sacrifice for the country. God Bless you and your loved ones.

I want to express my deepest sympathy for your loss. I am grateful to have been a friend of Jim since when we served together in the Camp Pendelton Singles Branch in the elders quroum presidency in 1984 and 1985. Everyone who knew Jim had highest respect for him. He was a dedicated Priesthood holder who fill every assignment with a cheerful attitude. He was also a model Marine. His entire adult life was about service to God, country and his fellow man and was the product of a kind, generous family whom I got to know while living with Cecil and his wife in 1987. I will miss Jim greatly. I and my family pray for you comfort and peace at this time of your loss.

May the wonderful memories you have of James and your knowledge of the heroic sacrifices he made on behalf of all Americans comfort you in your great sorrow. I am truly grateful for men and women like James--people of great honor, courage and duty--who sacrifice all for those of us left behind. May God bless you and your children and comfort you always. Your husband was a hero.

I don't know James, but I'm very proud of you. You are a hero to this nation and especially to the state of Utah. My heart goes out to his family, but how great it is to be a part of this true gospel...REMEMBER the plan of salvation. James is with our Heavenly Father and you will all reunite with him someday soon, never forget that.
