James D. Hittle

Born in 1915, died in Arlington, VA on June 15, 2002 of natural causes. He served with distinction as a Marine Office in World War II. He will be remembered with affection, admiration and respect by his friends, associates and colleagues in Salt Lake City, the faculty of the University of Utah and his NROTC students at the University of Utah, where he was the Commanding Officer and Professor of Naval Science, 1949-1951. Following his Utah assignment, he spent a number of years as a special assistant to the Commandant of the Marine Corps in Washington, D.C. He authored a number of books on military matters. Following his retirement from the Marine Corps he wrote a syndicated column on military affairs for the Copley News Service and served for a number of years as the General Manager of the prestigious Army-Navy Club in Washington, D.C. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; two sons, Harry M. and James R. Hittle; and by two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He will be interred in the Arlington National Cemetery following services at Old Post Chapel at Fort Meyers at 11 a.m. on July 24, 2002, directed by Murphy's Funeral Home of Arlington, Virginia, 703-920-4800.  For more information locally call James P.
