James North Obituary

James Richard North

January 3, 1948 – October 8, 2025

- James "Jim" North was born to Richard and Betty North on January 3, 1948, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and lived a life marked by a deep love of learning and service. He peacefully passed away on October 8, 2025.

As a young man, Jim served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Germany, where he developed a lifelong love for the German people. Later, he and his beloved wife returned to Germany as senior missionaries, treasuring the opportunity to serve together in a place that had long held his heart.

During college, he took great pride in working as an emergency room orderly and with the Utah County Search and Rescue. He was an excellent woodworker and home builder, his work is found throughout northern Utah. Later in life, he was a sales engineer whose work took him throughout the northwestern United States. He specialized in making factories, mills and foundries more environmentally friendly. Nearing retirement, he returned to his construction roots and worked on plans for the Redlands California Temple.

Jim had an insatiable love of learning and enjoyed exploring the world around him and delighted in sharing his knowledge with others. He found pleasure in Scouting, cycling, sailing, the mountains, cooking, crossword puzzles, and BYU sports. He learned to fly gliders and later airplanes, taking every opportunity to fly around for business.

He had a gift for making friends wherever he went-whether around the corner or across the world. It seemed that no matter where life took him, Jim would either run into someone he knew or quickly make a new friend.

Music was an important part of Jim's life. He was an accomplished pianist and organist and found joy in using his musical gifts. He served faithfully as a temple ordinance worker and organist, where his devotion and service brought peace and beauty to those around him.

He was survived by his wife Marian; children Marcus and Annice North, Whitney Evans, John and Rose North, Marti and Nic Dumas, Ben and Tricia North, 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and his siblings Russ and Sue North, Jane and Ken Naylor, Julie North-Brown, Nancy Jensen, and Laurel and Todd Schewndiman. He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Betty North and brother-in-law Jim Brown.

There will be a public viewing from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Sunday, 12 October at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley located at 1007 W. South Jordan Parkway, South Jordan, Utah 84095.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, 13 October at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints meetinghouse located at 1409 W Shields Lane, South Jordan, Utah. There will be a public viewing prior to the funeral from 10:00 to 10:45 am at the same meeting house. Interment at Mountain View Memorial Estates.
