Janet Cummings Obituary

Janet Lee (Christensen) Cummings

May 20, 1933 - May 14, 2021

South Jordan, Utah Janet Lee Christensen Cummings passed away quietly on May 14, 2021, six days before her 88th birthday. Her heart, which had a defect from birth, was surgically repaired when she was a younger mother. It remained strong in every way to the very end.

Janet was born to Hyrum Wilhelm (William) and LaVerne Steed Christensen on May 20, 1933.

She attended Roosevelt Junior High and East High School where she enjoyed acting in many drama productions. She met Hugh Caine Cummings at East and waited for him to serve his mission to Eastern Canada. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on May 6, 1953.

Janet and Hugh are the parents of four children: Christopher Hugh (Helen Tennant) Cummings of Sandy, Utah; Kim Lynden Cummings of Scottsdale, Arizona; Cory Michael Cummings (deceased); and KaraLee Michelle (Gregory Morris) Goates of Salt Lake City, Utah. They have 8 grandchildren: Anthony (Brooke), James, Rachael (Justin), Laura (Andrew), Morgan (Nick), Cameron, Preston, and Amber. They also have 9 great grandchildren.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her younger sister Judith Lynn Christensen (Raymond Reid) Peterson and her son Cory Michael. The family is comforted and excited about their reunion beyond the veil.

Janet and Hugh raised their family in Holladay, Utah. Both were active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Janet was an excellent seamstress, like her mother. She sewed costumes for many award winning Roadshows. She served in the Young Women's organization. Janet loved to make crafts and was a homemaking leader and held other callings in the Relief Society. Hugh and Janet served a Senior Mission in the Nibley Park Ward. They also served in the Holladay Healthcare Branch.

Janet was a member of the Tri Delta sorority when she attended the University of Utah. She continued to be involved after college.

Mom was an excellent cook, she was frugal, and made clothes for her children. Mom loved holidays and had boxes of decorations covering each holiday. Sleep-overs at Grandma's house with cousins were fun and memorable. Mom was always supportive of our scouting activities, helped with homework and other projects.

After Dad's passing, Mom spent winters with Kim in Arizona or traveling with him to New York, Hawaii and Branson. She loved drama so going to Broadway productions with Kim were a treat. Summers were spent with KaraLee and her family in Utah, enjoying their busy life, going to local plays and grandchildren's school productions. The last five months were spent with her granddaughter Laura in South Jordan, entertained by their precocious little boy and served diligently by Laura's husband, Andrew. Chris and Helen were also able to spend more time with her.

Mom's pets were the most pampered dogs around. A family friend once said I want to come back to life and be one of Janet's dogs.

Mom had a testimony of the restored gospel and leaves this life recommended to the Lord.

Our love for our mother, grandmother and great grandmother has grown deeper because of her service to us, then through our service to her. We love you, Mom! We will miss you! We are glad you endured well to the end.
