Jason Funderburk Obituary

Jason B.Funderburk 11/6/15 ~ 3/7/03  Jason B. Funderburk, 86, passed away March 7, 2003 in Sandy, Utah. Born Nov 6, 1915 in Tradesville, SC to Sam P. Funderburk and Sulee McManus Funderburk. Married Bertha Johnson, 1938. She preceded him in death. Married LaRee Gillard, 1980. In 1935, he began working for the Charlotte News and Observer in Charlotte, NC. Then, in 1937, went to Missoula, MT to work for the Missoula Merchantile Company, where he met his sweetheart, Bertha, the daughter of W.B. Johnson, and later they were married. In 1939, he went to Oakland, CA, employed with Bethlehem Steel Company, and later became foreman. In 1942, he purchased W.B. Johnson Sheet Metal and Heating Company from his father-in-law, in Grand Junction, CO. In 1943, he returned from Oakland to Grand Junction to get his business started. In 1944, this company diversified itself into a full mechanical contracting company, doing business as plumbing, heating, sheet metal and air conditioning. At this time the company was doing work throughout Western Colorado, including Vail, Breckenridge, and Aspen. In the early 1960s, the company decided to expand its operation into Utah, doing the first project in the mid-1960s. This was the project of the Salt Lake International Airport, the largest expansion at that time. Shortly thereafter, the company did mechanical work for Hillcrest and Sky-line High Schools. Some of the other major projects throughout the Salt Lake Valley included the LDS Church Office Building, the ZCMI project with the Beneficial Life Tower, the Kenne-cott Building, Temple Square, Symphony Hall, the Field House - University of Utah, and Ogden. Several other jobs were performed for the LDS Church on the Campus of Rexburg College and BYU. In Washington state, he did full mechanical work for the LDS Temple in Bellvue, along with other large projects. Jason was an avid fisherman and hunter. He will be missed by his friends and acquaintances in the contracting business. Survived by his wife, LaRee; step-son, Dell Gillard, Salt Lake City; step-granddaughter, Mindy (Daniel) Dansie, West Jordan; three step-great-grandaughters, Serena, Whitney, Courtney Dansie, West Jordan; four brothers and three sisters, Bill Funderburk, Salt Lake City, UT, James Funderburk, Lillington, NC, Elliott Funderburk, Southern Pines, NC, Donnie Funderburk, Sanford, NC, Angie Rhodes, Raleigh, NC, Sara Hobson, Sanford, NC, Martha Godfrey, Hubert, NC. Services will be Tues. March 11, 2003, 2 p.m. Larkin Sunset Gardens Chapel, 1950 E. 10600 S, where family and friends may call Mon. 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to services. Interment, Larkin Sunset Gardens.
