Jed Homer Obituary

Jed Keith Homer

1953 ~ 2021

Our amazing husband, father, brother and Papa, Jed Keith Homer, passed away on June 16, 2021, after a tragic accident while hiking in the Wasatch Mountains.

Jed was born January 13, 1953, the eldest son of Laura and Keith Homer in Logan, Utah. When he was 2 years old his family moved to Roy, Utah. He graduated from Roy High School and earned his bachelor's degree from Weber State University. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in what was then West Germany, spending time in Berlin and forming a lifelong appreciation for the language and culture of the country.

On August 5, 1977, he married Sheri Lyn Johnson in the Ogden Temple. They have three daughters — Jill, Lisa, and Sara — upon whom he doted and who adored him. He was the perfect Dad for a family of four women. He was a patient, steadfast, loving, and devoted father who nurtured a special relationship with each of his daughters. He would go on to extend this attentive devotion to his seven grandchildren.

He served many callings for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and Sheri served a service mission to Temple Square from 2016 to 2018.

For most of his career, Jed worked as a database administrator at American Express. He dutifully went to work each morning with his brown-bag peanut butter sandwich and banana, building a secure life for his family so they could pursue their passions. The family loved to travel and visited numerous national parks and cities throughout the American West. Jed retired in 2014, and he and Sheri continued to explore the world, visiting Germany, England, Switzerland, and enjoying many more memorable trips with his daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren.

In the mid-1990s, Jed joined a hiking group from his office on excursions in the Wasatch Mountains. This launched an enduring passion for hiking and the outdoors, which Jed pursued with tireless zeal and stamina. Some of his hiking accomplishments include multiple ascents of Mount Whitney, at least 17 rim-to-rim crossings of the Grand Canyon, extensive explorations in Canyonlands National Park, and countless summits of his favorite (and unsurprisingly some of the more difficult) Wasatch Mountains — Lone Peak, Pfeifferhorn, Twin Peaks, Mount Timpanogos, and Gobbler's Knob.

To say he died doing what he loved does not diminish the shock and suddenness of his passing, but it's true in every sense of the phrase. Jed stockpiled several lifetimes' worth of experiences in his 68 years and touched many lives in the process. He was a strong and steadfast anchor for all of us. We are devastated he's gone onto the next adventure so soon, but his presence in our lives can never be diminished.

Jed is survived by his wife, Sheri; his daughters, Jill (Beat Jegerlehner), Lisa (Chris) Cannon, and Sara (Spencer) Large; three sisters: Jan Mueller, Kayla Boudreau, and Marcia Homer; two brothers: Kelly Homer and Collin Homer; seven grandchildren: Max, Ashleigh, Zachary and Trey Cannon, and Lyla, Huntington and Benson Large, as well as many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Keith and Laura, a beloved sister-in-law, and an infant niece.

A visitation will be held Thursday, June 24, from 6-8 p.m. at Anderson & Goff Mortuary, 11859 South 700 East, Draper. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 25, at Draper Eastridge Stake Center at 1187 Draper Parkway. The family will meet at 10 a.m. in the church building prior to services that morning.

In lieu of flowers, his family would appreciate donations to Salt Lake County Search and Rescue. (http://saltlakesearchandrescue.org/donation/) They are endlessly grateful for the organization's expertise and care during the recovery effort.

I am unable to put into words the depth of my sorrow at your passing, Jed! I still can't wrap my mind around it. The world was robbed of your presence far too soon. Though I did not see you often, it was like no time had passed when I did! You radiated love, patience, and kindness and you will always have a piece of my heart!! Love you forever, Laurie McQueen

Jed is one of the best men I've known.
He treated me with respect, as a new brother-in-law even without big credentials.
He was always interested in me and what went on in my life. He's been a great Husband and Father. I'm so,so sorry for his tragic, early passing!
