Jerry Williams Obituary

Jerry Allan Williams

1955 ~ 2022

Tarzana, CA - The heavenly hosts received a musical genius when Jerry Allan Williams passed away December 29, 2022. After battling West Nile Virus for several months, his weakened immune system succumbed to an infection, and he passed from sepsis. Jerry was born August 27, 1955 in Albany, GA to William Hillman Williams, Sr. and Arva Joy Ward (deceased).

Jerry lived passionately with discovery of talents and interests, and his capacity to absorb more of what life offered was unconfined. His childhood reflected this magical sense of discovery: he loved nature, and never met a tree he didn't like. He and his older brother, Bill (deceased), were pranksters. He kept many snakes for pets. He loved the water, especially vacationing with his family in Panama City Beach, FL. At the age of 12 he took piano lessons and knew he'd found a new passion.

As a teen in a band with a successful single, Jerry left the band and cut his long hair to answer the call to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ecuador. After his mission, he graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor's degree in music. Jerry studied the lives and works of all the great classical music composers, and Brahms was his favorite. His wife introduced him to opera when they went to Marriage of Figaro for one of their first dates. He was hooked from that point on to opera...and Wendy. Jerry married Wendy Laurence in Irvine, CA October 12, 1990. He loved his wife and treasured his daughters, Lauren and Michaela, and they were sealed as a family in the Salt Lake City, UT Temple.

Jerry's profession included arranging, performing, conducting, and composing. Jerry loved live performance, and with his years of experience, he became an expert at putting live shows together. His ability crossed a broad spectrum of genres as he worked with numerous symphonies throughout the country and artists with varying styles such as Stevie Wonder, Garth Brooks, Barry Manilow, and Britney Spears. Jerry wrote the music for two original musicals, Jane Eyre and The Best Medicine, and he created and arranged all music for the Las Vegas Donny & Marie Osmond show. Jerry also released Portrait of a People, classic hymns he arranged and original works he composed; he loved sacred music. Jerry touched countless lives with his talent, always shining a light on others while lifting them to sound and perform their best.

Friday was his favorite; he played both the Earl Thomas Conley and George Jones versions of "Finally Friday" at the 5 o'clock whistle to anyone around to commence celebrating. When Jerry decided it was time for a party, it became a party! He had a quick wit about him and a wonderful sense of humor.

Jerry had a passion for learning and usually carried a book in one hand and a Diet Coke in the other. He was a devout student of the scriptures and voraciously studied religion, art, history, and music. He learned to read and speak Hebrew. Honoring the Sabbath Day was a commitment he held sacred. He loved his LDS Tarzana Ward family, all those who have come and gone while living in the San Fernando Valley the last 32 years, and so many others who affected who he was. A quote from his notes on the cover of Portrait of a People encapsulates how Jerry felt about his journey and encounters with his fellow travelers. Speaking of people in his Albany Ward: "I still see their faces--too numerous to mention. They would quietly come into my life--make an indelible impression--then move on. Now, years later, they would have no idea of the impact they made." Now, through his tender example, he is the one that has left a permanent imprint on our hearts to love deeply, avoid judging others, and show kindness to all.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 32 years, Wendy Laurence-Williams; two daughters, Lauren Williams and Michaela Williams; a brother, Dave Williams (Eve); a sister, Gail Williams Iverson (Dan); and 18 nieces and nephews: Brent, Matt, Sarah, Daneka, Isaac, Morgan, Madison, Maren, Kirsten, Mette, Grant, Klara, Mackenzie, Madison L., Clayton, Morgan L., Annabelle, and Daisy.

A Family and Friends Gathering will be held on Friday, January 13 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the same location as the funeral. The funeral service will be held at the Tarzana Ward chapel at 5520 Topeka Drive, Tarzana, CA on Saturday, January 14 at 11:00 a.m. The service will be streamed and available via Zoom.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Jerry Williams Memorial & Family Support gofundme account established to help support his daughters, Lauren and Michaela, with their higher education expenses as they will navigate their future without their beloved father.

I was a close friend of Jerry Williams when we were in Provo, Utah.
He would also come to my friend´s recording studio.
We stayed in touch periodically.
I saw him a couple of times when he was in Vegas with Donny and Marie´s residency.
I loved talking to him.
I became a flight attendant and
he loved talking about places around the world.

I had no idea he had passed till just now!
My friend Quinn, whose music studio he came to, told me he had heard of Jerry´s passing.

What a tremendous loss...
Such a great talent, knowledgeable and kind person!

I just can´t believe he´s gone...

I am sorry for the loss for your family.
Jerry is and was a good friend and person.

I know he´s playing music with the Angels.

Sincerely,
Sherry

Dear Jerry and Family,

I have just now happened upon a January FB post about your untimely Graduation to Glory. I am feeling a profound sense of loss . . .
I first met you at Creator's Studio in Provo, UT, 1978. You had just finished a session and I was up next on the schedule. I knew you were working with the Osmond's and I was in awe . . . as you were just relaxing at the old grand piano (that desperately needed Rick B's magic touch) and I asked you to show me 'where you are' on your path, sonically . . . Well, I will level with you--I was so carried away by that unworldly 'off the top' performance, I thought, "I should sell my equipment--I will never come close to Jerry's level . . . but as I continued to take it in, I became more inspired and propelled to at least , try to head in that direction!" I was deeply moved and will never forget that private concert/lesson you blessed me with!
We crossed paths a few times after that--always lifted and inspired by your skills, but now I am floored, learning of your being taken in your prime like that.
We have lost a huge talent, a great man and true Christian.
I will continue to try emulating your skills and that unique and full quality of life as you have entered His presence.

Jerry would stand on his hands when we were kids and challenge me to a race. He could take off running on his hands. He always was catching snakes. As a kid, he was passionate about capturing and keeping any turtle or snake. What I remember most was his ease of laughing. He always had a smile. He could play the clarinet, but the piano was his love. His friend, Tal Henderson

I've not seen Jerry in many, many, years. Despite that unfortunate fact, his passing has weighed on me. During our time together at BYU I was privileged to experience Jerry's stunning talent, boundless energy, kindness, and humility. I valued our friendship and considered him a marvelous example and mentor. I wanted to let his family know they have been, and will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. He will be missed...

Dear Jerry in Heaven (and his loved ones left here on earth), You were a wonderful friend to me, as we started out National Tour of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, with Marie Osmond, in 1993-94. I was just coming out of my 11 year marriage, so it was a dark time for me. Touring can be very lonely, so I was SO appreciative of your sweet and funny friendship. You really helped me by just being a friend. I am eternally grateful. You are a dear, dear man, and now the angels understand. Much love to you and your family. I was planning a trip to L.A., timed around attending this funeral in person from Montclair, NJ, but after consulting with the many friends I know out there, especially Santa Barbara, I made the decision to stay back East. I hold you all in my heart this morning, as you gather to honor Jerry's life and legacy of music.

I am still so shocked to hear this sad news. I first met Jerry in London in the early 80s when he was with the Osmonds and kept in touch over the years, most recently by email - I had a lovely email from him just before Christmas. He has always had a special place in my heart and will continue to do so. He was funny, intelligent and kind and I am proud to have called him my friend. Condolences to his family x

Finally, Friday, to, our gifted Friend Jerry
By Kathryn Holloman Adams

I would like to add my, remembrances, of Jerry Williams, a dear friend, amazing pianist, composer, conductor, and music engineer. We were first friends in Albany, Georgia, in the 70's where so many, were blessed by his incredible gifts, and love of music. We had a great group of youth that we went to High School, and seminary with. and Jerry played with his band, at our prom. It was always a treat, when Jerry would play, for our road shows, and sacrament meetings the hymns never sounded so beautiful and hip! I loved his parents, Arva, and Hillman Williams and his siblings. These are just a few of the great fun, memories, of a wonderful person.
I express my sincere sympathies, especially to Gail, Dave and all the Williams Family and friends. May the Lord bless and comfort your hearts,
Sincerely, Kathryn Holloman Adams

This poem, was Inspired in part by the information in this obituary, this song Jerry loved, Finally Friday by George Jones

Well, it´s Finally Friday for you, my friend, Jerry
But it's comforting, to know, it's not the end.
To the ends of the earth you flew
But now there's no more work on earth, for you to do.
Never a dull moment, even from your youth,
Always played hymns and rock and roll, music, from your heart and soul it's the truth,
Always a song to write or two,
Can't begin to tell, all you did, the right things right,
You were very successful too
You put so much life, in every minute,
Gave to others, what you put in it,
It´s Finally Friday, you are free to fly,
Much, more music there to compose,
In the great by and by..
And conduct, a Heavenly Choir, I suppose
So many heard you play from the heart
Your loved ones wait here, as you depart
So many lives you touched
So many will miss you much
Jerry. Friends, Family and your Savior,
Were there to welcome you,
Forget the working world blues
And let the good times roll, it's true..
Time to celebrate, the final 5´oclock whistle blew
It´s Finally Friday,
Till we meet at Jesus feet,
TGIF my friend for you

So incredibly sorry to hear this news. I had just thought of him earlier in the day as I was working on a piece of music. This man was a mentor, a scholar, and one of the most genuinely compassionate men I ever had the good fortune to know. All our love to the Williams Family. You will always hold a treasured place in our hearts!

Rarely does my breath get taken away by hearing shocking news, However, receiving word of Jerry's sudden death really devastated me. Our paths rarely crossed in the last 3 decades or more, but they paralleled in so many ways and I have always held him in the highest esteem as a fellow composer, arranger, & performer using him as a standard for which to aim.

When we were at BYU together, he always made composition classes more interesting with his never-ending energy and witticism. Recording sessions were always a joy and all the studio musicians and engineers looked forward to playing and recording his music.

I send as much love and peace to the Williams family as I can. Listen to your husband and dad's music whenever you miss him and you will hear in each note and harmony his love for you and his faith - as alive as when he first wrote them. God bless.....

There was an area at the Flamingo hotel and casino in Las Vegas where we would always see Jerry walk by, so I named it "Jerry's Place." This is where we would always meet up with our friends from around the world before a Donny and Marie show!
He always had a book in one hand and a diet Coke in the other. He was always kind and gracious and would stop for photos along the way.
Chris Reynolds loved him to pieces and would trip over everyone and everything trying to hurry up and get to him. She passed away from breast cancer in 2015 and I know she did the same as she welcomed him with opened arms into heaven.
Thank you Jerry for bringing so much joy to the world and now may you rest in Heavenly peace.

I send deep love and God´s Peace to Wendy, Lauren, Michaela and family for such a devastating loss.
I learned so much about Music and Performance 101 from Jerry, but all within the realms of pure joy and laughter which made our serious work fun! I will never forget him and his huge brilliant character.
Many years ago, in Nashville for the weekend, he came over to investigate snakes in my garage. He found a whole family of babies and had them in between each finger laughing at them as they were snapping at his skin. I was standing a few feet back and got a box to take them out to Radnor lake. I don´t know if I´ve ever laughed so hard. Rest in God´s Peace good servant Jerry.
