John Richard "Dick" Calder obituary

John Calder Obituary

April 9, 1941 ~ Dec. 31, 2012
Dick Calder, age 71, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2012, following several months in a coma.
Dick was born April 9, 1941, in Bountiful, to Harold and Sydney Goodrich Calder. He spent much of his childhood in Vernal and Idaho. After graduating from Bountiful High School in 1959, he served an LDS mission in Rosario, Argentina. He received a political science degree from the University of Utah and served several years in the US Coast Guard Reserves. Dick was an entrepreneur in the truest sense of the word - over the years, he owned and operated Rockport Resort, Lamplighter Square, Calder's Pizza, Calder's World Travel, Plandome Hotel and Old Hotel Saloon, Nine-Mile Ranch, and a recreation and swim center in Guatemala.
Dick married Dixie Morrison in 1964 and remained close to her family throughout the years.
In 1996, Dick married his eternal wife, Zoila Hernandez, from Guatemala.
Dick was an unforgettable charmer. He once joined The Sons of Norway lodge, and was quickly elected its president. He was an adventurer with a strong spirit and a desire to experience life to its fullest, having many hair-raising adventures and referred to by some as "Indiana Dick." He was also called "MacGyver" at times, because he could repair just about anything with a piece of string, a wad of gum or an elastic band. He had an encyclopedic knowledge. There wasn't a question to which he did not know the answer. Authorities questioned him just because they found him interesting. He had an interest in all things in life. He traveled the world and was deeply interested in different cultures. He taught a German Shepherd to bark in Spanish and trained a raccoon to roll over. He truly was the most interesting man in the world.
He was generous and went out of his way to help others. He founded a school for underprivileged children in Guatemala, where he loved to play Santa at Christmastime.
Dick is predeceased by his parents, his oldest son John Timothy, and granddaughter Halie Marie. Dick is survived by his wife Zoila and their sons Richard and Joseph; by children from his first marriage, Deanna (Tony) Richardson, Elisabeth (David) Halliday, and David Jeremiah Calder; his siblings Mac, Rodger, Billy, and Rosemary; and eight beloved grandchildren. He leaves behind many not-to-be-forgotten memories and will be missed by many.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. January 5, 2013, at the LDS Church at 77 Orchard Drive, Fruit Heights, Utah, following a viewing at 10a.m. Family and friends may also visit Friday, January 4, from 6-8 p.m. at the church.

I worked at Calder's Travel in 1980-1981 as a travel agent. I loved working there and knew at the time Dick Calder was one of a kind. Soooo generous and goood. I loved him!! I moved back to Chicago when I left Calders Travel. When I would visit Salt Lake I always would want to look him up. I had heard he had moved to California? Sooo sorry I never got back in touch with him. So sorry for your loss. He was the BEST of the BEST! Melanie Filichia

I sure love you and miss you, Dad. I think of you with John and Grandma and Grandpa. Sometimes I think I can feel your joy from there.

I knew Dick long ago when he was married to Dixie. His obituary is understated when it says he was an unforgettable character. He was a very interesting person -- and it seemed there was nothing that he couldn't be or do. A delightful person to know. I am sorry to hear that he is gone. God bless all of his family.
