John Sonnenberg Obituary

John Sonnenberg
1922-2015
John Sonnenberg, 93, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2015 at his home in Salt Lake City, Utah, after a long, healthy and fulfilling life.
John was born on April 11, 1922 in Schneidemuehl, Germany to Otto Paul and Lucielle Mielke Sonnenberg. His parents converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in their home country. At age six John sailed to America with his mother and siblings, Eric and Rita, and settled in Chicago where his father had obtained employment. John was an apt student and placed on an accelerated academic track. He attended Lane Tech High School, and during his teenage summers landed, with Eric, coveted lifeguard positions on the Chicago beaches of Lake Michigan.
In 1940 John enrolled at Brigham Young University. 1942 saw him in the U.S. Navy assigned to the Dental Corps. He completed his dentistry degree at the University of Louisville where he met Sister Joyce Dalton, a full-time missionary in the Eastern States Mission. After dental school graduation, John pursued Joyce back to Tooele, Utah, ultimately being sealed by Elder Harold B. Lee in the Salt Lake Temple on November 26, 1947. Joyce was the love of his life, and he was constantly devoted to her.
The proud couple returned to Chicago to pursue a dental career and raise their family. Early assignments in the new Chicago Stake included stake missionary and high counselor. In 1963 John was called as first counselor in the newly created Chicago South Stake serving under President Lysle R. Cahoon and with Dallin H. Oaks as second counselor. In 1970 John was called as president of the Chicago South Stake (later Naperville Illinois Stake), and lovingly gave his time to many until his release.
Family remained John's priority. He and Joyce spent many weekends at their vacation home on Lake Holiday, just west of the city. This served as a gathering place for their burgeoning family during the next three decades.
After release as stake president, John was called as a Regional Representative and served as chairman of the Chicago Temple Committee. In 1984 he was called to serve in the First Quorum of the Seventy. He was assigned to Frankfurt, Germany, where his German language ability helped him create a strong bond with church members. Subsequently, he was called as president of the Pacific Area where he and Joyce traveled among the many isles of the sea. Ever since that special calling, John held a particularly tender love for the people of Polynesia. Following his release as a general authority, he and Joyce served as temple president and matron of the New Zealand Temple in the early 90's.
In recent years, he served in many local church callings including as sealer in the Salt Lake Temple. He loved his alma mater, BYU, and was honored by receiving its Distinguished Alumni Award. Throughout his life he enjoyed participating in a variety of sports, especially golf, routinely "shooting his age" with several hole-in-ones to his credit.
John had a remarkable memory, recalling not only names but also details of life stories, which astounded and blessed friends and family alike. His life was one of faith and sacrifice that touched many souls, especially his posterity and those whom he served in the Church. He had an unwavering testimony of Jesus Christ and the restored Gospel, which was reflected in his October 1989 General Conference address: "I bear witness that there is, figuratively speaking, a 'North Star' leading us today-a beloved prophet of God. Look to him. He will point the way of truth and righteousness. Look to the Savior, for He will give you life eternal."
John is survived by his lovely wife of 67 years, Joyce; seven children: John David (Terry), James (Young Ja), Brent (Janette), Joan (Les), Dean (Deanna), Scott (Jill), Clair (Terry); 33 grandchildren, and 69 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; siblings Eric and Rita; and great-granddaughter Brittney. Funeral services will be held at the Salt Lake Ensign Stake Center, 135 A Street, Salt Lake City, Utah on Thursday, July 9 at noon. Viewings will be on Wednesday, July 8 from 6-8 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, and on Thursday, July 9 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Salt Lake Ensign Stake Center. Burial will be in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
John was a missionary at every opportunity; in lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the LDS General Missionary Fund.

I just learned of Elder Sonnenberg's passing and want to express my condolences to the family. He was a very spiritual man. He called and set me apart as a member of the Birmingham Alabama Stake Presidency in 1988, an experience I will never forget.

To (Sis.) Joyce and family. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers on your behalf. Our loss is heavens gain.

For many years our families and lives have crossed. At each point you have been a blessing to us. Our mother, Jean Wachsmuth Mather, and John grew up together in Chicago with the grandparents.

As a missionary I was assigned to the Northern States Mission. My second area was Naperville. The first time I met (President, Elder) Sonnenberg he inquired as to my background. He asked about my parents. Upon telling him who they were he said to me, "How is Jeannie doing?" Then he told me they had grown up together. I always felt your tender love and concern for me, perhaps even a bit special. Thank you.

Joyce and John you were a blessing to me as a missionary. You invited us in to your home a time or two to visit and then get on our way to work. I remember the Sonnenberg boys playing ball at the Stake Center, the talks at Stake Conference, etc.

You were kind to my first wife Kristi and I during her cancer treatments and passing.

You were kind to my wife now of 25+ years Mary Smoot. We loved you two and were honored to have Elder Sonnenberg seal us.

The catch up visits and concerns at General Conference every 6 months about how everyone was doing.

We even named our son, our only son, John and talk about his rich heritage that includes a grandpa by that name and our good friend John Sonnenberg who married us.

You were there in the Islands when the Tabernacle Choir, that Mary's dad ran for 17 1/2 years, sang their way through your area. Wendell has shared how much he appreciated you assistance and encouragement with that Tour.

Joyce, you and John have been a team for these many years. We admire you for your faith and faithfulness - to the Lord, to family, to all of us who care about you. May you be blessed for the short time away from each other.

Mary and I express again our prayers and love.

Jeff and Mary Mather

PS I hope John says hello to Mom and Grandpa and Grandma Wachsmuth and many of your family for all of us here.

Dear Joyce,

Our hearts are fulll of gratitude for the ways in which President Sonnenberg and you have influenced our lives. We will always remember the way President Sonnenberg took Jim under his wing when he first came to Chicago as a young dental student. Although he had sons of his own to golf with, many times your good husband took Jim with him out on the golf course. He was a man who took time away from his busy schedule even for a young student who needed a father figure in his life at that time.

Our hearts are filled with love for him for his kindness to us in a time of need. Our love and prayers go out to you at this tender time of parting.

My condolences and best regards to the Sonnenberg Family.
What a wonderful leader and positive example for all of us that had the privilege of knowing President Sonnenberg. Let me share a memory: I was playing a church basketball game at the Naperville Stake Center. I was hit in the face by an errant elbow, which resulted in one of my front teeth being knocked out. President Sonnenberg was at the game and asked to see me after the game. He looked over my mouth and said let's go to my office. For the next 3-4 hours he worked on my teeth--two root canals and then a temporary tooth. Subsequently, I returned to his office on at least 2 occasions. NO CHARGE! I have never forgotten his compassion and selfless sacrifice. A year later, he ordained me a High Priest. I am priesthood connected to this wonderful servant forever.

May you have peace and comfort.

Beloved Joyce and Family, Joe & Barb Christenson just called to tell me of John's passing or should we say his celebration from this earth school summon cum laud. I send to you my heartfelt sympathy at this tender time of parting.
John and you have been our most cherished friends over the years for which Beverly and I will always be grateful.
Although there is no substitute for the physical presence and love of a dear companion, father and grandfather, I pray your knowledge of the gospel will be a source of peace and that you will feel the comforting influence of the Holy Spirit. I also pray that you may be sustained at this tender time of parting and in the years ahead by that spirit which comes from Him who said, "I will not leave you comfortless : I will come to you." (John 14:18)
John was one of the Lord's Anointed and he became such because of his Eternal Companion named Joyce. I will look forward in giving him a big hug when I, too, can join my beloved Beverly. I send you my love and blessings,

May she be blessed with the comfort she is in need of at all times. Look forward to seeing you again Grandpa! Larry and Elizabeth Friis

Condolences to the Sonnenberg Family on the loss of a wonderful father and grandfather. He was our Dentist and Stake President and an exemplary man. As a Stake President he called Charles to be a Bishop and made him promises that were fulfilled and offered great hope and direction. We also mourn the loss of this valiant disciple of Christ.

He was a gentleman and a friend to all! He truly cared about what others were doing, reminding me of my Jim in that sense! Hopefully, they are both enjoying sharing family stories and tales of Tahiti! Love to Joyce and all of the family!

Dear Joyce and family,
Our love to all of you. We express the great appreciation from all in the Benac family for your example, service, and friendship across the years.
Indeed, John remembered everyone, because he loved everyone. No doubt my parents are personally thanking him for helping our family make that great transition to become members of the church and change all of our lives.
Frank and I also benefitted from his service as we returned to Naperville as young marrieds and then raised our own family in a great stake of the Church. (We are currently helping build up the Church in Juigalpa, Nicaragua, hoping to bring the same eternal gifts to others.)

President Sonnenberg was a wonderful man. My first memories of him was as my dentist. My favorite is as a speaker. He spoke with such power, knowledge and sincere earnestness. He was a kind man with a wonderful sense of humor. He will be missed but he will also be remembered fondly by all who knew him.

He was our Stake President in Naperville and the first person my husband met before we moved there. He gave advice to Ken as to where to live when we moved from Iowa for a job change. He had an incredible memory. I believe that he knew everyone in the stake by name! We remember him fondly.

John, you have shared your blessings with so many, who love you eternally for your great and kind life. We are assured that our Kind Father will continue to bless and sustain you and your dear family. We love you all. Kay Stevenson

It wasn't long after we moved to Downers Grove, Illinois where Kent did a dental internship at the VA Hospital that the Sonnenbergs invited us to go water skiing with them. Our first child was only one month old. John and Joyce were always so warm and welcoming to us. We enjoyed meals at their home and I watching lots of church ball with my husband, Kent, and the "Sonnenberg boys" always playing to win....They were great athletes!!! We have enjoyed a continued long-lasting relationship with the Sonnenberg family through the years. You are a wonderful example of Christ-like service and compassion for all of us. We will always treasure those fond memories.
We wish your entire family much comfort and peace in the life of a great man!

Dear Sonnenberg Family,

Thank you for your life of stalwart service and testimony. Our family loved your father and were blessed to have known him. Every time President Sonnenberg saw me years later, he would remember the work he had done on my teeth and wanted to see how they were holding up.

To a wonderful missionary who brought two boys into the Church in 1956 in Riverside, Illinois. Thank you Elder.

President Sonnenberg was my first Stake President. The day I met him at his home was when I knew that he was a Man of God. The Spirit of the Holy Ghost was always around him. He never forgot anybodies name and seemed to be everywhere when you needed him. He was present at all three of my boys blessings. He will be missed but never forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with Joyce and all his family.

We are saddened to learn of John's passing from our midst, but know he is now in a better place. I remember he, Joyce and children from years past, also his mother and father. A personal memory of John came at stake picnic time each summer in Chicago. We would play some softball on those occasions. HIs biceps were so large, and he so co-ordinated that he could hit the ball far over the heads of all of us! He was a powerful man in every aspect of life, a neighbor, a friend for most of my life, a counselor in our callings in the Church, and a most honorable, hard working man. We will miss you, John. Joyce was with him constantly, and is a most loved, respected sister. His children are living testaments to his life.

We loved the Sonnenbergs. They provided such inspiring and inspired leadership to many generations of graduate students in Chicago. We are grateful to have had such splendid role models. We are equally grateful to know some of their children and grandchildren. Our lives continue to be blessed by this noble family.

President Sonnenberg was in the Stake Presidency when I was growing up in Chicago. Our family lived in the Chicago Heights Ward. He was the nicest man I have ever met. We will meet him again. He as been reunited with my father, Ernest Raymong Johnson. May the Lord bless his family until we see you again President Sonnenberg.

July 5, 2015

How sad I am to hear of John's passing. He was such dedicated home teacher to my family for so many years. We loved him dearly and knew of his love for each of us. I am glad he lived long enough to know of my mother's return to the church, and to see my sister and I as members of his sons' wards. A great soul is now with his Savior. We will miss him. Love to all the family, Gail McComas
