Judy Hougaard Obituary

1942 ~ 2012
Our sweet wife, mother, grandmother, sister and auntie passed away peacefully on June 19, 2012 in Riverton, UT.
Judy was born on March 11, 1942 in Oakland, CA to Alfred and Violet Fontano. She married Dale Hougaard on May 14, 1966 in Carson City, NV. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Oakland LDS Temple.
Judy grew up in Northern California. She attended BYU where she earned her nursing degree in 1966; she later earned her Master's degrees in both education and nursing. She worked at St. Mark's Hospital, Intermountain Heath Care, Westminster College and DMBA, dedicating 50 years to caring for others as a nurse, teacher and an administrator.
She was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served many years as Young Women's President, Stake Young Women's counselor, Gospel Doctrine teacher and Relief Society teacher. She loved the Gospel and enjoyed not just teaching it to others, but living it by example. Judy will be remembered for her positive and optimistic attitude, constant devotion to others, her beautiful quilts, independence, love of music, her outstanding cooking, her faithfulness to Gospel principles, her love of the outdoors and her unparalleled devotion to family. She will be sorely missed.
Survived by her husband Dale, two sons and one daughter, Darren (Julie) Hougaard, Brian (Julie) Hougaard and Carrie McCormick and 13 grandchildren. Also surviving are her sister Joy (Munir) Merchant and her brother James (Kathy) Fontano.
Preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Mindy.
We would like to express our gratitude to the nurses at Riverton Rehabilitation Center for their excellent care and little acts of kindness during her final days. A special thanks to Amanda Cheever, who like Judy, is a true example of what it means to be a nurse. We will all be forever grateful for her service to Judy and to our family as she lovingly and patiently guided us through the death experience.
Services will be held on Monday, July 2, 2012 at 11:00 am at the Butler 11th Ward, 1845 East 7200 South. A visitation will be held on Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East 10600 South in Sandy. Online condolences welcomed at www.larkincares.com.

I just heard of Judy's passing. I am so very sorry. A wonderful person has left this earth. Judy was my mentor during a particularly difficult time in my nursing administrative career. She lead me through it all... step-by-step -- and even helped me redirect my career. I will be forever grateful, and proud to call her my friend. May the Lord bless you, her dear family.

Our family was sad to hear about the passing of Judy. I have fond memories of girls camp with her and the other leaders. One time we had to shave and massage their legs and feet. It was quite comical. She was a wonderful lady and I know she will be greatly missed. Our condolences to her family.-Becky Western Loveless & Harold & MaryLou Western

I was so fortunate and so blessed to have my life's path cross with Judy's during my nursing and management days at Intermountain Health Care. She was such a friendly and warm person who made everyone around her feel comfortable and valued. May her loved ones know what a joy it was for so many of us to have known such aa dear woman! I am so saddened to hear of Judy's passing. There never was such a wonderful boss in all the world. She made Missionary Medical a wonderful place to work. She taught us to remember compassion and understanding for the situations the sweet missionaries and their families had during their times of service. I am thankful I had the opportunity to learn from her and that I can count her as my friend.
