Kevin Crane Obituary

Kevin Jay Crane
"Bomber"
Kevin was born on May 26, 1953 in Portland, Oregon, to Alma Peterson and Luella Crane. He lived in Murray, Utah for most of his life with his sweetheart, Deb; and passed away on March 25, 2016 in Murray, from complications from an aortic aneurysm and being too awesome.
Kevin served as a jet engine mechanic in the United States Air Force and met his wife while serving in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Upon graduation from the police academy in 1977, he was hired on by the Salt Lake City Police Department. As an officer, he worked in various departments throughout the SLCPD, including Robbery, Homicide, Pawns, and in the first Metro Gang Unit. During this time, Kevin influenced many individuals in the community and made lifelong friends. After serving 30 years in the SLCPD, he hired on with the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Department and worked there until his death.
When not working, Kevin was a devoted husband, father, "Bomber," and faithful member of the LDS Church. He loved date nights on the Harley, riding four-wheelers with his grandkids, and spending time with his family. He exemplified his beliefs of Jesus Christ through constant service to his family, friends, and strangers.
Kevin is survived by his wife, Deborah; his three children, Joshua (Marci); Jessica McKay (Matt); and Janeal Smith (Chase); and his six grandchildren (Lindsay, Bryton, Aidan, Regan, Arwen, and Olivia). His family would like to express their gratitude to the Intermountain Medical Center Thoracic ICU's doctors, nurses, and staff for their incredible care. They also wish to thank all those who supported them with an outpouring of love, prayers, and faith during this difficult time…love you, bye.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 31, 2016, at 11:00 AM at the Murray 12th Ward, 363 East Vine Street, Murray, Utah. Viewings will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2016, from 6:00-8:00 PM at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary at 4760 South State Street, Murray, Utah, and on Thursday, March 31, 2016, from 9:45-10:45 AM at the church prior to the service. Interment will be at Elysian Burial Gardens, 1075 E. 4580 So., Salt Lake City, Utah. Condolences: www.jenkins-soffe.com.

I knew Kevin at the police department and had a chance to work very closely with him in the Robbery/Assault Squad in Detectives. Kevin came from Homicide to augment the Robbery Squad with the increased case load.

Kevin was a great Detective and more importantly, a wonderful human being.

I wish to express my condolences to the Crane family.

I am heartbroken to hear of Kevin's passing. I'm Jenny Simmons mom. I remember Kevin well from visits to Jenny's ward. Everyone loved him so. He was like a big chunk of love and cheerfulness floating around the ward. Even I, a visitor in the ward, felt it.

I knew Kevin most of my life growing up in Murray. We graduated from Murray high school together. I was the paperboy to his home for a couple of years and he played the violin and I played the cello in Mr. Walcott's Orchestra in Junior High School. Kevin was quiet and had a noble bearing. I have not seen him in many years as we moved away from Utah, and so I am very grateful for the chance to read of his goodness and express this memory of this old friend to those who loved him dearly. My best to you!

Mr Crane was a very kind man and officer. In my youth I would run into him while he was working and chat. Kevin would crack a quick joke and get back to work. Later in years I got the opportunity to work with him for a short time and he was very knowledgeable and still had his humor. Sure will miss seeing him around and at training. Prayers to his family.

Kevin and I hired on together at the PD and worked together many times in different assignments. He was such a kind and thoughtful person in addition to being a very good cop and Detective that I really enjoyed his company at work as well as going out on our scuba adventures. I will really miss his smiles and laughing personality.

Unfortunately I am in Texas and unable to attend the services but please accept my condolences and know that my thoughts are with you.

Respectfully,
Roger Winkler

Kevin was in my high school class and ward. I dated his brother and as teenagers in the neighborhood, we all had a blast together.
Kevin was one of the kindest. I remember loving all of his amazing and sweet family. Thinking about him now brings back great memories and my heart goes out to those he left behind during this challenging time.

Kevin was on the downtown bike squad 20 years ago when I was a new recruit. He was my FTO - field training officer- He taught me how to take charge of a situation upon arriving at a call and took great pride is wearing the uniform and serving others. Every time I fill up my car with gas at the shops I remember Kevin showing me the message that would come up on the screen after we put in our credentials to be able to pump gas - the message I still get and I imagine everyone gets to this day is "ok - start pumping" but the message for Kevin would read "Kevin is Awesome"
Kevin, I am thankful for your influence in my life !

Dear Debbie and Family,

I was deeply saddened to learn of Kevin's untimely passing. It takes a special individual to be a public servant for so many years, and I appreciate his dedication and his willingness to take the risks required to be a protector of the rest of us. While his presence here on earth will be greatly missed, I strongly believe that he will remain with you and continue to watch over you and your family as your guardian angel.

I am so pleased that Clare has the opportunity to be in your class at Highland Park Elementary. You are a great teacher, and she has come to love you as I do. Please know that we share in your sorrow. I value your friendship very highly and appreciate your influence upon my beloved granddaughter.

My thoughts and prayers will be with you in the difficult days ahead as you cope with this loss. While I know from experience that the longing for the earthly companionship of your eternal sweetheart never goes away, I also know that cherished memories and hope for the future through our faith and knowledge we share of the Plan of Happiness bring comfort and peace. I pray that the love and concern of friends and family will help to ease the burden of your sorrow.

With love and deepest sympathy,

Pat Griffiths

I've been away for a long time since retiring, however, I was very fond of Kevin,he was a good man. We worked together, and did some fun things as well together in our early years on the p.d. Me and Ellie moon took a great snow mobile , and fishing trip to Yellowstone. I was one of the first customers when he and his brother started a cabinet company. They did a beautiful job in my house in summit park...I'm sad I didn't get to see him again before his departure. Kevin is and will be a reminder how special life is. He was my age. My heart goes out to his family.. Shane

When I first moved in next to my uncle about two years ago, I had a lot of respect for him. I've always considered him to be one of the toughest and in many ways scariest people I know. He seemed to be that kind of officer that never lost his temper or his cool (always the most terrifying type of person.)

The longer I lived next to him, the more I learned the other side. I always knew it was there also, but it's lost with distance. Familiarity shows you the humanity lurking under that one person you see like twice a year. I would see Nick (the horse) running around with excitement every time he was out there. On Saturdays I was woken by him driving across the lawn on a four wheeler with his infant grandchild on his lap "I need to get her home before mom finds out what we've been doing." When my dad was hospitalized with a serious illness Kevin was one of the first people to visit. He was quiet and kind and had this knack at knowing what people needed right now.

When me and my wife married this last December I remember how worried I was about finances. At my wedding the largest money gift I received (not to belittle the other gifts we were given) came from Kevin. He said, "You'll get plenty of other gifts, I know I'd want a lot of money." I know it's something small and little materialistic to remember about him, but at that moment it meant a lot to me; something I needed.

I met Kevin in elementary school, shared Jr. High and went to Murray High School with him. We were even mixed up in our year book one year: his photo said he was Karen Clark, my photo said I was Kevin Crane. We thought it was funny.
Twenty five years later we moved to Lincoln Place and I was delighted to find out that Kevin, his lovely wife, Deb and their 3 beautiful children were our new neighbors.
I always loved seeing him with his grandchildren riding his four wheelers. He was a proud and loving father and grandfather.
We will miss seeing him and send our most sincere condolences to his family. We hope your happy memories will help to mend your broken hearts.
Love,
