Madeline Strate Obituary

Madeline Ann Strate "Choc"  The dearest, sweetest mom, granny, sister, and friend, Madeline Ann Strate (90), left us Sunday to be with her husband, mom and dad, brothers and all of her many friends and family who preceded her in death. She endured many years of health problems with dignity and grace. Madeline was a wonderful, courageous lady whom we loved and admired without compare. Her sweet nature, unbridled energy, and keen sense of humor enchanted everyone who knew her. Madeline Ann Peterson was born on March 9, 1913 in Richfield, Utah to Andrew and Annie Peterson. She had the happiest childhood, and was loved and spoiled by her parents and three brothers. After high school, Madeline attended BYU, where she was one of the most beautiful girls on campus. Her friends there nicknamed her "Choc" for her love of chocolate. In 1935, she married Melvin Douglas Jenkins of Provo. They raised three children: Carol Ann, Jacqueline, and Douglas. They lived in Washington, D.C. for eight years, which was one of Madeline's favorite cities in the world, and later lived in Denver for a brief time. Later divorced. In 1959, she married Wallace Henry Strate, with whom she spent 20 wonderful years. She worked for the United States government and for U.S. Steel for many years. Madeline found her greatest joy in her family, whom she adored and nurtured. She loved to travel and golf. She was an avid gardener who took great pride in her beautiful home and yard. Madeline gave many years of community service in various capacities. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Melvin and Wally, and brothers Verl Peterson and Sterling Peterson. Survived by brother Wayne A. (Verle) Peterson, daughters Carol Ann (Max) McCormick, Jacqueline Seethaler, and son Dr. Douglas (Karla) Jenkins, 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, Luzon Peterson (sister-in-law), Shirley Peterson (sister-in-law), Al Seethaler (son-in-law) and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the many care givers at Millcreek Retirement Residence, Dr. Nabi and staff, and everyone at Vista Care Hospice. Services will be held Friday, December 26, 2003, 12 Noon, at Larkin Sunset Gardens Chapel 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy, UT with a visitation one hour prior. Interment Orem City Cemetery.
