Mark Smith Obituary

1941 ~ 2015
Our sweet husband and dad passed away suddenly on February 24, 2015. It may have been unexpected, but he lived a full life and for that we are so grateful.
He is preceded in death by his wife Linda Louise Herrick, his parents Howard and Merle, stepmother Vonnie and his sister Nancy.
He is survived by his wife Dawn and her six children, spouses and 21 grandchildren. He is also survived by his children, Abby (Jason), Eric (Christy), Bart (Lisa), Matthew (Whitni), Aaron (Anna), Joshua (Kortny), Chrissy (Greg) and 22 grandchildren.
Mark was born in California on November 12 1941. His baby blessing was the day Pearl Harbor was attacked. Perhaps that played a role in his decision to join the military. He joined the Air Force in July of 1964 and it was his career until 1991 when he retired as Colonel.
Mark and Linda were married civilly in 1964 and sealed in the Oakland Temple in 1965. Linda herself was a military brat and was a great companion for Mark through their 16 moves/separations. Their final move after retirement brought them to Utah.
He was a faithful member of the LDS church. He was devoted to the Gospel in every way. He served three missions with his wife Dawn…a lifelong goal for him. Thank you to Dawn for helping him accomplish this in his life as it was so important to him. He also served in many positions in the church and as a Temple worker on three different occasions.
Mark lettered in tennis and cross country in high school and loved both sports his whole life. He was a master of ping pong and Mark loved surfing as a young man and later body surfing. We hope Heaven has a beach because he loved the ocean. Mark had a way of introducing himself to any and every one. If you were uncomfortable with that…well that was going to happen whether you wanted it to or not. He truly meant well in all he did and all he said. One of his life's mottos was "Kill 'em with Kindness". He certainly tried to always to do that.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 28, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at the Cedar Hills 16th LDS Ward Chapel, 10351 North Bayhill Drive, Cedar Hills, Utah. Family and friends may call Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Warenski Funeral Home, 1776 North 900 East, American Fork, Utah, and also at an additional viewing on Saturday morning from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services at the church. Interment will take place in the East Lawn Memorial Hills Cemetery.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.warenski.com

We were so sad to hear of Mark's passing. Such a genuine, caring person who made everyone feel at ease & cared about. We certainly enjoyed Dawn & Mark as neighbors & members of our ward. Our deepest sympathy to his family with special love to Dawn (my outstanding Mia Maid teacher in California years ago). They both have been amazing influences for good.

We are saddened by the news of Mark's sudden death. He was always the one to make us smile and laugh at his silly joke, even if we were down. He will surely be missed by all who know him. How grateful we all are for the amazing Plan of Salvation. If we are worthy we'll definitely enjoy those jokes once more. We love you Dawn, and pray for you and the families that are effected at this difficult time.

Mark was one the most amazing home teachers ever! Our family will never forget his love and devotion. Kid's birthdays were remembered with McDonald gift cards; and what a time we had with cracking toes! Always so much fun! What precious memories of a delightful home teacher and loving friend. We will miss him! Our love and prayers to his sweet family.

I knew your parents when they were in Kailua, Hawaii. Such wonderful people. Linda would help me out by watching my daughters when I needed her to. Mark was a great example of what a father and leader should be. My condolences to the family. Stephanie Abiang Yamashita

My love and prayers are with you Dawn and family. I babysat Mark when he was young and he and I spent part of a summer at Bessie's ranch when he was about 10. We rode horses, swam in a river and had a wonderful time. I have many good memories of my handsome cousin. I will try to come to the funeral if it is not snowing.

I love Mark's love of life. He was always on the go but always knew how to stop and smell the roses along the way. He was such a good example to me. He will be greatly missed.

We always appreciated Mark's friendliness, humor and ability to make all feel welcome. I'm sure he's already hard at missionary work where he is now. Our love and prayers to Abby, Dawn and all the family. Much Love, The Heimuli's
