Michael Heyn Obituary

Michael Scott Heyn

1965-2025

Michael Scott Heyn of Millcreek, Utah, passed away on October 15, 2025.

Mike was born on July 5, 1965, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Jeffrey and Renate Heyn. He was a much-loved child and devoted oldest brother. He spent his early years in the Avenues, a place he loved his entire life. Mike was known in school to be a defender of the underdog. Mike graduated from East High in 1983.

Mike met Shana Brimley Heyn while they were students at the University of Utah. They married on June 12, 1986. He proudly graduated in Political Science. He was an excellent student and had a lifelong love of politics. He was a diligent reader of The Salt Lake Tribune. His family heard him vehemently support his causes on many occasions. He was a loyal Democrat.

Mike was a lifelong Utah fan and proudly hung his Utah flag every Saturday during football season. "Go Utes!" were some of his children's first words.

Mike and Shana have three delightful children. Mike never questioned his priorities, consistently putting his wife and children first. He would commute to work for two hours each day, and still show up for soccer games in his dress shirt and tie. His kids fondly remember Sunday mornings because that was the day dad prepared breakfast for everyone. The addition of his two grandsons was a great blessing near the end of his life.

Mike was interested in everything. We joked on family trips that he would be the last one out of the museum. The beauty of the natural world would stop him in his tracks. He was a lifelong learner.

Mike was deeply kind. If there was someone in need, he would help without hesitation. Mike made friends with everyone: the mailman, the baggers at Smith's, every neighbor. He was caring and interested in people.

Mike was ambitious and had a strong work ethic. These qualities led to a very successful professional career. He got his start at Dentrix Dental Systems where he fine-tuned his craft and became an exceptional salesperson. He continued his work in the dental/medical industry and retired selling Henry Schein medical supplies. His charm and charisma were undeniable. Everybody liked Mike.

Mike became very active in his forties and started biking and running. He excelled at this like he did at everything he put his heart into. He completed several half marathons and competed in a triathlon. This lifestyle change was an inspiration to many people.

Near the end of his life, he was able to volunteer at Canyon Rim Academy, the neighborhood charter school where Shana, Paige and Serena work. The children loved Mr. Mike because he would listen and make them feel seen.

Mike had a great sense of humor and a wonderful laugh and smile. He was an exceptional storyteller and often entertained family and friends with his signature humor.

Mike loved his children, 80s music, vacations, cars, the natural world, politics, friends, Lake Powell, neighbors, being home, summer barbecues, good movies, the Utes, The Trib, good discussions, his career, vintage Coleman lanterns, tradition, his Vespa, running, good coffee and Shana. His dedication to her and to their children cannot be expressed enough.

The family is grateful to his caregivers at Valencia at Draper and Serenity Hospice. Special thanks to Melissa, his nurse, and Vina, his caregiver.

Mike is preceded in death by his mother, Renate Moritz Heyn and his brother, Christopher Heyn. He is survived by his father, Jeffrey Heyn, brother, Robert Heyn (Paula Cochrane), wife, Shana Brimley Heyn, daughter, Paige Marie Pectol (Ian), son, Mitchell William Heyn (Jordyn Weight), daughter, Serena Leigh Knaphus (Kody), grandsons, Owen William Pectol, and Jones William Heyn.

A gathering for friends and family will be held on October 24, at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy, Utah, at 2:00 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 3:00 p.m. Interment at Salt Lake City Cemetery.

Yesterday

I'm feeling a lot of sadness right now as I am sure you all are, while also feeing a lot of gratitude and appreciation for the Heyn family. I love you Uncle Mike.I remember coming to your house when I was little and he would always give me access to special candy and always made me feel special. He pushed me in the swing, or threw the football with me. I haven't met many people that are as kind as Mike. I seriously don't think he had a bad bone in his body. I miss seeing his smile. It always made my day better. Even when he started to struggle with his memory, he would smile. I remember watching movies and trying his "super spicy" snack mix! His magic tricks at Grandpa Vern's house were mind blowing. I wish I could be there with you guys during this time, but I'll be there with you in spirit!
You guys should be so proud of the father/husband you have. I love you all. Love Elder Atticus Hydrick ( great nephew)

Dear family: I am very sad to hear about the passing of my childhood friend. I enjoyed spending a lot of time with Mike from gradeschool to highschool. We hiked, rode bikes, explored the avenues, spent time with friends and family. I remember eating lunch with Mike often on the outside stairs at East high. He was a fantastic person who will be greatly missed. My best to the family during this transition.
