Naomi Hughes Obituary

Naomi Overlade Hughes 1918 ~ 2004 "An Elect Lady"  Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Naomi O. Hughes passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on April 17th, 2004, after a  valiant struggle with congestive heart failure. She was born April 1st, 1918, in Spanish Fork, Utah, the first child of Ada Corinna Fillmore and Linford O'Dell Overlade. Her relationship with her parents was very special; they taught her the meaning of   Unconditional Love".  During her early childhood she lived in Provo and later in Helper where she graduated from Carbon High School at the age of 16.  Mom married Lawrence D. McKee in August, 1935. This marriage was later solemnized in June, 1941 in the Manti Temple. Lawrence passed away in November, 1944. She married Rex S. Packard in October, 1945. He passed away in May, 1967. She married Arthur G. Hughes in October, 1970. He passed away in October, 2003. All three of these fine men knew each other and were men of integrity. Mom worked for more than 32 years for the Utah Department of Social Services and at the time of her retirement was Executive Secretary to the State Director of Assistance  Payments. She loved music and enjoyed playing the piano. She loved reading literature and writing poetry. Her greatest love was her family. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a firm testimony of service, sacrifice and the restored Gospel. Mom often said, "Ours is a Gospel of love. Over the years I have learned that each of us has an unlimited capacity for love. I believe this is how it will be in the eternities. All of my life, I have been surrounded by love - yet I reach out for more!" Mom lived as she believed. She loved all of us and was loved in return.  She is survived by her children, Mary Ann (David) Myers of Beaver; Lynn (Mary Lee) McKee of Bountiful; Verl (Marie) Packard of Moab; her stepchildren Connie Morganti of Richfield, CT; Nancy Green of Salt Lake City; George (Diane) Hughes of Salt Lake City; 27 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and her sister Phyllis (Mel) Brewer of St. George.  Preceded in death by an infant son, Earl Packard. The family wishes to express gratitude for the loving care given by the nursing staff of IHC, Odyssey and Grand County Hospice. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 23rd, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. in the Butler 20th Ward, 1435 East 7200 South, Salt Lake City. Friends may call at the Butler 20th Ward from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday. Interment will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Springville.
