Otto Berndt Obituary

Otto A. Berndt 1929 ~ 2008 Otto A. Berndt passed away peacefully on May 3, 2008 after a short illness. He was born January 11, 1929 in Hamburg, Germany to Otto H. and Martha Noerring Berndt. Martha died seven days after Otto's birth and was never allowed to touch or see her newborn son. After many long years of waiting, a joyous reunion between mother and son has finally arrived. Otto grew up and was schooled in Hamburg. He, along with family and friends, endured the difficulties of World War II. He had a wonderful mother, Frieda, who helped the family survive during this terrible devastation. The family consisted of Gertrude, Otto, Ruth, Ludwig, Wolf Dieter, Barbara, and Regina. Otto immigrated to Salt Lake City in 1951. He was drafted into the US Army and retired in 1989. He married Carol Smith on April 10, 1957 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were blessed with five wonderful children, Brian, Kirsten, Mark, Allison and Andrea. He worked for Jordan Meat Co. for 34 years and had many choice friends there. He was a life-long member of the LDS Church, and had a strong testimony of his Savior Jesus Christ. He enjoyed many church callings among which was a couples mission from 1997-99 in the Leipzig, Germany Mission. He enjoyed German Extraction work and had wonderful friends there, as well as serving as a visitor host at the LDS Conference Center. His associations in these callings resulted in many great friendships. We will sorely miss Otto, his great sense of humor, never ending jokes, and handful of candy treats to everyone. He was a very generous and giving person. We look forward to the day we will all be reunited as an eternal family. Survivors include his wife, Carol, and their children: Brian (Merla), Kirsten Ronna (Stan), Mark (Kellie), Allison Gibson (Bill) and Andrea; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Ludwig (Rosemarie); sister, Barbara Muirhead (John). We would like to express appreciation to Care Source and especially Carie Squires for the loving, tender care that was shown to Otto. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 8, 2008, at the Little Cottonwood 16th Ward, 6350 Rodeo Lane (1540 E.) at 11:00 a.m. A viewing will be held Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary (3401 S. Highland Drive) and 1 hour prior to services on Thursday at the Ward.

I haven't been able to visit with Otto and Carol for quite some time but I always have warm memories of past visits. Your hospitality when I needed a place to stay for Thanksgiving and on other occasions are always appreciated. And I still remember "discovering" Uncle Otto's amazing train set-up in the basement when I was a kid and we came to visit.

Our prayers and love go out to Carol and your family.

Dear Berndts,
Who is going to pinch our cheeks with his fun greeting of "You must be Clyde's kids!" We have fond memories of you living on Lambourne Ave. I remember his delicious bismarks that he would bake and share with our family. That great smile lives on. Maybe Otto is having a great reunion with all the Kenwood II Ward friends he'll greet up there!
Love, Mary Lou

I will miss Otto's cheery hello each Sunday. He has influenced my life forever and I will continue to try and follow his example. I hope you will feel the Comforter's spirit through these difficult days ahead. I know Heaven is a happier place with Otto there. I can imagine how joyful the reunion was with his mother and hope to hear all about it one day. Many thanks to Otto for starting each of my Sunday's with a warm greeting, a smile and a reassurance that my efforts were OK. :)

Carol and family,
My deepest condolences are with you all on the passing of this wonderful man, Otto. It's been a great blessing in my life to serve with him at the Conference Center. He had such a special spirit about him as he would take guests through the building -- and he loved to take our German guests! I will miss tremendously his laugh, his stories, his wisdom and his companionship. May the Lord speak peace to your sorrowed hearts, and may His spirit guide you through the coming days and nights. There is truly only one Otto!! We will miss him - but are eternally blessed for having known him.

I remember Otto well from when I joined the 142nd Military Intelligence Company of the Utah Army National Guard in February, 1983, which met at Fort Douglas. SFC Berndt served as our German Section's instructor. Not only was he very capable in teaching us more of his native language, but also about the military skills, etc. we needed. He was a very entertaining storyteller and certainly had a great sense of humor. Otto was truly a special man.

Carol and Family

Otto was a wonderful brother-in-law! Regine and I and our whole family loved to visit and listen to jokes and the experiences that Otto had in Germany, the army and every day life. At Regine's grave side service he lifted our spirits and gave us many reason to carry on. Regine and Otto are now enjoying the brotherly and sisterly banter that they love so much to do. I will miss him.

Dear Carol and Family,
When I was reading this it brought a smile to my face when you talked about the candy and uncle Otto's laugh. I always will always remember that laugh. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Dear Carol and Family,
Otto will be greatly missed by all of us. I am truly grateful to have had the opportunity through Klaus to know both of you. You are a true friend and Otto was a great guy. I know that his parents are very happy to be with him again. Klaus and tto are probably reminising over the old times together. Mayby they will be missionary companions over there I know Klaus is a missionary. What a wonderful blessing to know that you will be with him again and his wife and eternal family. God Bless You,
Bernice

Dear Berndt family:
Please accept our deepest sympathies at the passing of your beloved husband, father and grandfather as Otto truly is a great man. We are certain that he is, this day, rejoicing in the wonderful family he raised and now in his being reunited with loved ones beyond the veil. We, as neighbors and friends of the Ronnas, are particularly grateful for the wonderful person Otto is, and for the influence he had on Kirsten--truly a remarkable woman and a tribute to her wonderful parents. Please know of our profound respect for you and your extended family.

I will miss Uncle Otto greatly. He always brought a smile to everyone's face and if you ever needed to find him you just followed the laughter. I will greatly miss him and his jokes, but I'm comforted that he is reunited with his mother. My heart is also comforted that he has been reunited with his sister, my mother. My condolences to Carol and all the kids, he was an amazing man!

Dear Carol and Family,
The memories of Carol making Mark's ham sandwich before volley ball and basketball practice in the pre-dawn hour while I came to walk with Mark to school came flooding back as I read Otto's obituary. I remember riding bikes on the dirt hills in front of your newly built home in "the field." I remember your kindness. Thanks for being part of my life, all of you. My deepest sympathies for you in Otto's passing, yet what a fine reunion for him and his mother.

Sincerely,
Dave Jenkins
