Raleigh Davis Obituary

Raleigh Dyer Davis
June 11th 1946 - October 24th 2012
Raleigh Dyer Davis, our dear husband, father, grandpa and friend returned to his heavenly father peacefully while surrounded by loved ones on October 24th. He passed away due to complications of a hemorrhagic stroke suffered on his 66th birthday in June. Raleigh grew up in the Capitol Hill area, and attended Granite High School. He served as an LDS missionary in England (British South Mission). Raleigh completed his bachelor's degree at the University of Utah, where he played the trombone as a member of the Ute marching band. He completed his master's degree with BYU. He married the love, joy, and inspiration of his life, Rosalie Theresa Lugerbauer on May 22nd, 1970 in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity. He was very passionate about his beliefs and interests. Within minutes of meeting him, you would learn about his love for history, aviation, model building, car racing, his country, and most importantly his family and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Ral taught seminary and institute for 37 years and touched the lives of countless students. His greatest success was in the walls of his own home, as a father and husband, teaching us about our Savior. He will be missed greatly here on earth, but we know that he is anxiously engaged in preaching the gospel in the life hereafter. Raleigh is survived by his dedicated wife, Rosalie Davis; their four children: Grant Spencer (Audra), Garrett Paul (Whitney), Ginger Rose (JJ) Weber, Gina Leigh (Teaguer) Terrell ; and one grandson, Grant Spencer Jr; his siblings: Leigh Fairclough, Kevin, Kelly, and Pat Davis. He is preceded in death by his parents Brent and Ruth Davis, along with his father and mother-in-law Carl and Rosalia Lugerbauer.
Funeral Services will be held in his honor on Monday, October 29th at 11:00 AM, preceded by a short viewing from 10-10:45 at the Sandy Hillcrest 4th Ward at 8735 S. Harvard Park Drive (1060 E.) A separate viewing will be held beforehand on Sunday, October 28th from 6-8 PM at the Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary located at 4760 S. State Street, Murray Utah 84107. I've only known Raleigh for a few years, but I am so grateful for the interactions we had. He is a kind Man that has always made me feel welcome in your family. I will always remember his love for the gospel of Jesus Christ and his unbridled nature to share the gospel with strangers. Thank you Grant, Garrett, Ginger and Gina for your testimonies. I left the service feeling a renewed desire to live the teachings of the gospel. I'll miss you Raleigh, thank you for your incredible example of what it means to be a worthy Priesthood Holder.

As Grant said, Thank you all so much for the messages about our Dad. I am really struggling today. We miss him so much. Visited the Hill Aerospace Museum just to feel close to him and his passion for aviation. So many things I want to talk to him about. I miss his calls late at night to help him find the remote control. I miss his shouts to close the bathroom door when the swamp cooler is on to let the air circulate properly. I miss his fireworks, eating at Hires after priesthood, watching Indy Car races, golf tournaments, the Utes, Nascar, RSL,and countless other sporting events. I miss his other calls about getting an oil change, helping pick up the apples in the backyard, getting on the roof to fix the swamp cooler, etc. He was thrifty and frugal when it came to the finances growing up, but he spared no expense for me and my wife's wedding dinner. It was the best dinner I ever had on the highest floor of the Joseph Smith Memorial building overlooking the Salt Lake Temple. Thank you so much. We love you, and can't wait to see you again.

Raleigh was well known and appreciated for the quality and craftsmanship of his model airplanes, etc. We had many a fun conversation involving his political views, etc. as well. I always enjoyed his passion and enthusiasm. He was also the seminary teacher for my middle son who enjoyed him very much.
I have had some strokes myself and realize how devastating they can be. From what I heard about the severity, Raleigh is in a much better place. My deepest sympathy to all family members.

I hope what you wrote, "His greatest success was in the walls of his own home, as a father and husband, teaching us about our Savior..." can be said of me when it is my time. That is the greatest compliment to a very good, honorable man! Thank you for your example Raleigh.

The first time our children came in contact with Raleigh was him phoning our home asking for Bob then stating he was the sheriff. Our children were caught of guard because they had never connected their dads name(Robert)to Bob and why would a 'Sheriff' be calling. They became acquainted with a teaser and family friend. What a great spirit brother. God bless you all.

I have so many memories of my boyhood friend Raleigh. I grew up with him on Capitol Hill (Cortez St.) We had so much fun together. He was such a fantastic marble player that we gave him the nickname "Knuckles" Davis. We played on the same Little League baseball team and he's the first person I knew who could actually throw a curve ball. I know "cause we played catch alot. He always had a love for aviation and airplanes and we spent literally hours together making different kinds of paper airplanes and seeing who's could fly the longest.
I missed his friendship when his family moved from "the hill" out to So. SLC. Thankfully they would invite me out occasionally to spend a Friday night and Saturday with them.
My sincere sympathy to Leigh, Kevin, Kelly and Patrick.
I know what a truly remarkable brother you had. He left us way too soon but I know he must be having such a wonderful reunion with your parents and grandparents.
My sincere love and sympathy to you all,
Dan (Danny) Christensen

I went to school with Raleigh for a few years in Jr. High and early high school at West High. I have not seen or heard from him since but but recognized his name and picture. I have thought of him over over the years about what a nice and good person I remember him to be. I am truly sorry for his loss.

Dear Rose,
Thank you for letting us have the honor of caring for your wonderful husband. Athough, I never had the opportunity to speak with him, I enjoyed his selection of music from classic piano to the good ole Eagles, the cozy family picture with ur beloved dogs amongst the snow, and the presence of love that filled the room when his kids and family visited. If he is to measured by the company he kept...well then, he is top of the line. I am certain he will be missed...I am sorry for your loss.

Raleigh was a good friend and an inspiration. Although we never taught together, he would always seek me out to say hello. I loved hearing about his experiences at Nauvoo excavating the temple sight. He had great wisdom and a very strong tesimony. I am so sorry for your loss. He will be greatly missed.

I was privileged to teach with Raleigh at the Boys Ranch. We had wonderful conversations. Raleigh always brought a smile to my face as he cracked a dry joke or gave me something to think about. He will be missed.

Bro Davis inspired me to be a better teacher. I will always remember his hat from Nauvoo that said, "I walked today where Joseph walked." He is a good man and an excellent mentor to a new teacher. I will always have fond memories of him and his great personality. It was an honor to serve with him, to learn from him and to be near him.

We send our heartfelt condolences and sympathy to Raleigh's family and especially to Leigh. Rick and I remember you both with fondness from our days together at Granite High School. Rick also worked with Raleigh a bit as their paths crossed in their stake callings (although in different stakes). The life of one we love is never lost. Its' influence goes on through all the lives it ever touched. We appreciated his friendship and great example. May you be blessed with peace as you trust in Him who gives it to us so abundantly. All our love, Rick Hall & Sue Pulver Hall

Raleigh! What a guy! I always enjoyed being in his company. Besides teaching together and a common love of country and constitution, Raleigh had a way to make you feel like you were one of his best friends. He always wore a smile. I am a better person for having had Raleigh as my friend. May God bless you and your family with peace in the weeks and months ahead.

Raleigh hired me as a secretary for Seminaries and Institutes 19 years ago. I didn't work with him for very long, before going to a high school seminary for full time work, but I really enjoyed the time that we did work together. He was such a thoughtful, good person and I'm sure he will be missed by many.

Raleigh always made me and the Seminary teachers laugh. He had a great spirit of love about him. He was always quick to share his views about the gospel or any other subject. I will miss Raleigh. My thoughts are prayers are with your family.

Sorry to hear of Raleigh's passing. I was fortunate enough to get copies of some of his Fairgrounds racing photos a few years back and appreciated and enjoyed the historical conversation and also the value of these images. Thank you Mr. Davis-you will be missed.

I always enjoyed the historical perspective Raleigh would add to a conversation. He was a life long student of history (especially when it came to the Church). He must be missing his family dearly but enjoying the first hand historical accounts of those on the other side of the veil.

Family of Raleigh It deeply saddens me to see the loss of Ralph. We went to school at Granite High, played in the band together, and had some class's together. He was a fun guy to be around and had lots of good laughs. May God be with you through the loss of Ralph, I know he will be deeply missed and he will never be forgotten.

Dear Rosalie,
Our hearts go out to you and your children at the loss of Raleigh. You and Raleigh were are very first friends when we moved into the Union ward when we all were "newleyweds". We so enjoyed our "family home evening" nights together and think fondly of you both. May you feel peace and comfort from Him who has provided all in order for us to progress through this life, our Savior Jesus Christ. Love, Don & Joan Lybbert
